Hey man, I'm going to talk to the engineers today about how to fix this.

Everyone, thanks for your feedback, as always. We just started this ad relationship yesterday and it's going to take a few days to do quality control on some of these ads. We're going to do our best to make sure you see quality, relevant ads.

I doubt Whiskey Media intends for this sort of advertising to appear on the site. Whenever you see something shady like that you should report it to them immediately.

Haha, "relationship". Punny. Glad to see some staff response on this, sometimes relevant threads get buried and never addressed.

Someone will stop in to parrot the mission statement soon and someone else will insist "fuck people who don't subscribe". Both very compelling, I can tell you. And Sweep, before you post your smug final word and lock this, consider what he's actually suggesting. That a site have ads actually relevant to the interests of the people subscribing. Instead of just agreeing to everything that gives you an offer. Nobody likes a slut. And keying into your demo benefits everyone; they get more clicks, you get more revenue, the users get ads that aren't tantamount to the bullshit I filter my emails of daily. Its just food for thought, really.

I agree with you, however, I like a slut. Sluts are great.

Why do people remind me of ads as soon as I forget they exist... There is a reason I neither watch tv or listen to the radio.

Adblock all the way.

pretty weird ad. websites always have had ads to their site. it's what keeps them up, and it's cheaper for the company to keep the site up.

If Dave gets wind of this they might at least confront the ad providers. As a designer I'm sure he's opposed to any garbage ads that clash with the color scheme and typography of the site.

Frankly, the Facebook one concerns me more than the spam ones do.  That seems like straight up phishing.  Granted, I didn't click it, but, whatevs.

As for Adblock, I don't use it because I have legitimately heard about things I am interested in from ads on websites.  It just has to be from a website that tailors its advertising accordingly.

Why are there people being compliant to this? If I saw that stuff I would be pissed too. Those ads typically belong to shit sites. This site should stick to having higher standards.

Edit: Cool, it's good to see that Top Men are looking into it.

Alright, I just got a video/audio ad for Resolve that began playing aloud without me even doing anything. I'm fine with ads (I don't use adblocker), but this stuff is trashy flash-game-website stuff. Really just makes the site seem sketch, especially for any newcomers.

If memory serves, they totally did run a series of ads like that.

This. It's baffling to see that the majority of the responses fall into either members saying "LOL GET A MEMBERSHIP" or non-members saying they're going to start using adblock. I'm sure Whiskey wouldn't want their entire audience to start using adblock, because there goes all that potential ad revenue because they're running shitty ads and not ones that actually cater to their audience.

Definitely these two. Anyone saying the ads are fine obviously isn't thinking of the vast majority of the audience that visit the site casually and don't even have accounts or memberships. I'd guess only about 10% of the people with accounts actually post on the forum regularly enough to provide input in this thread, and then there's presumably a huge number of people that don't even have accounts and just come here every once in a while. Think about the impression these types of ads gives off to them, the people who aren't in tune enough to know that they're trying out new ad agencies.

AdBlock+ all up in this bitch.

When I wasn't a member, I didn't run adblock on Whiskey sites because I wanted to do whatever I could to support them. Of course, they didn't really have much in the way of ads before I became a member.

@Daneian: Members don't get ads anyway, so it's a moot point for those who pay their $50/year.

I am a paying member, and don't have to see such ads here, but the fact that other people do have to see them kind of disgusts me. I see them all the time on Yahoo and such. Having those kinds of ads on otherwise legitimate content sites just adds that legitimacy to the advertisements, which is no good. It's like how Rush Limbaugh was (maybe still is?) schilling for that LifeLock company. That company is one step away from being a complete scam. I expect Giant Bomb to have more integrity than Rush. I am disappoint.

I never saw any of these talking ads until about 45 minutes ago, so I just turned on Ad Block Plus. I don't mind having to look at ads at all, honestly. But the talking ones drive me up the fucking wall. Especially since they're so irrelevant to the website they're on. And some of them you can't even turn off.

A while ago, when the ads were first introduced, they had talked about only having ads relevant to the sites. This is kind of annoying that they would go back on it like that. I realize they need money, but I think they should at least post an announcement about it to let people know that they have changed their stance due to financial reasons or something. Luckily I do not have to deal with them, being a yearly subscriber, but I'm still surprised at this turn in WM advertising.

This. Honestly, I will continue to support you guys and even will buy a subscription once I have money--college steals all my money--but until the ads are of the quality that don't potentially give me a virus if I accidently click on them, they will be blocked.

I'm confused.  Aren't ads only profitable if people click them?

I have an extremely hard time believing that people advocating adblock, ever intended to click on ads in the first place, regardless of quality.

Same with me, I guess its because I live in the UK and GB is a US site. I think this is why IGN etc all have .co.uk and .aus etc versions if they don't have a site in the relevant country maybe they can't advertise, but i'm not 100% on this.

While I can agree with people about relevant ads, didn't people learn in the early days of the internet not to click on ads that sound too good to be true or even ads at all?

Design wise, it looks out of place, but again, if you don't go around clicking stupid ads, they're just lacking design qualities. Who cares?

I thought the Adult Swim and Best Buy ads that were in quests were actually kinda cool and original.

While I agree those ads the OP posted are really weird, I don't see what exactly is wrong with having them. At least it isn't like facebook where they literally enter your private information into a search engine to find creepily accurate ads...
