"Go ahead and have a seat"
I've come to write this post as a way to open a discussion, you see... I really can't talk about this openly with my co-workers, so what better place than here to open the flood gates on a topic I certainly never thought about before. Sexual predation has become so common place in our society that it essentially is a punch line, an afterthought, another sad symptom of our decaying society. But when this subject rears its ugly head into the workplace, it really makes you think about it in ways that Dateline's hilarious "To Catch a Predator" series doesn't.
So if you haven't figured it out by now, basically someone I know of  was recently arrested on possesion of child pornography. Pretty serious stuff, and as I write this I know the sensitivity and seriousness of the matter, so please do not mistake this for a "work gossip" type of post, in all actuality there are a few quite interesting twists to this story that merit discussion.

One fact that makes this case especially disturbing is that the accused is a teacher. It is absolutely stunning the amount of teachers that are arrested on these type of cases, especially here where I live in Florida. These people obviously seek professions with easy access to their prey, there ought to be a better process to prevent these people from getting into our schools, churches, athletics, and ...Xbox Live?

The accused, who from now on we'll refer to as FROMHELL34677is an avid gamer and this name also happens to be his gamertag. I've done some research, aside from restricting communications and parental locking accounts, there really isn't anything stopping the thousands of FROMHELL34677s outhere from signing on to XBL and play anonimously... Should there be one?

I'm sort of conflicted, in one hand I definitely would like my online gaming to be predator free, but on the other I do not want XBL to become a gestapo state.

For now all I can do is inform you, the gaming public, and also provide you with a link to this story   for dramatic effect. I would also like to encourage all of you to file an XBL complaint under Profile, there is no way to avoid the player unless you've already played with him, but we can atleast get XBL to take a look at his profile.

Yeah, and it turned into a total war.

Just because someone is on XBL and happens to be a pedophile does NOT mean they're out there to solicit children. As it stands, there are no really popular multiplayer games under M17+, which means that anyone under that age wouldn't be allowed to play them without consent from their parents anyway. When parents give consent, and allow for a child to play online, they are effectively affirming their position that their child is mature enough to both A. play that game and interact with complete strangers and B. handle themselves and reject solicitors. By not supervising their children and then complaining about it afterwards, parents shift the blame and responsibility of parenting on to corporations, and that ruins the experience for everybody.

Using the games on that man's gamertag as an example, the only way I could see him interacting with someone at a T13+ level is on Forza or maybe Nascar if it has online. And the children's community on both those games is limited, as they're both sim racers and do not attract that demographic.

Filing complaint on that man's gamertag is not justice, it's prejudice. There's no story component or evidence that states he used it to trade or acquire child pornography, or even to try and attract children. As long as he's done nothing to violate the Terms of Service, he should be allowed to play the same as everyone.

The better question would be why he didn't bump the other one.

Excellent post Jayqe, but just so you know, the last game dude played was a slightly popular title ( Halo 3) and although it does have a Mature rating, we all know teens play it. I agree with you that this post is mostly about prejudice, but did you follow the link? Dude is a middle school teacher, caught with 7-8 year olds having explicit sex with adults on his computer, shouldn't he be scarlet lettered for his transgressions? I just personally feel that anything I can do to point a finger at his sickness is worth it.

I wanted to edit it by including links to the dude's profile, but after 10 attempts I grew frustrated and decided to recycle it and expose it to a new audience, so much for the exposure...

He can and will be scarlett lettered. By the government. It's not your responsibility to attempt to make his life any worse through (and you even said it in an earlier post) harassment. It doesn't matter if he's playing Halo 3- it's an M rated game, and the argument still stands that children should not be on the game unless parents can assure they're mature enough. If they aren't, it's as much the parent's fault as the offender. There's a difference between pedophiles and sexual offenders. If he had 7 and 8 year olds, that's probably what the dude was into, no? No 7 or 8 or even 10 year old should be playing Halo 3 without their parents knowledge of their online interactions. It's so much easier to place the blame on the already-blamed than to educate.

So you're saying you don't mind sharing your virtual worlds with the scum of the earth as long as they're anonimous. Sexual offenders are scarlet lettered, in the real world. but shouldn't he also be over XBL, a place that in the future might be his only escape, where he can buy Viva Pinata and start a dialogue with a child. I understand your argument that responsibility ultimately falls  upon the parents who supply this medium to their children, but it would also be wise of MS to cross reference XBL accounts with already available registered sex offenders lists, Im sure it could be done with Excell ;) and it may save them from a lawsuit in the future.

This sounds like spam to me. Who the hell are you to deliver us "The News" stories?  If I want to read about arrests of sexual deviants I can go to a news website or turn on a news channel.  Post your filth elsewhere.  I got better things to do with my time than wonder about whether an adult has "issues" on the Xbox.

Scum of the earth? Did he kill anybody? Did he even sexually assault anybody? No. He happens to be mentally ill in that regard- not unstable. Nobody said he was a child-molesting, kid-eating monster. And he didn't film or create the porn either. I'm willing to bet he was a pretty good teacher too (most offenders seem to excel at what they do and appear very charismatic). He got caught- good. I'm willing to bet he's reasonably intelligent enough to realize he has a problem, if he hasn't gone mad. As far as I know, nobody has ever met up with and been killed by or assaulted by anyone from Xbox Live. Most kids know what can happen on the internet, and a lot of parents are smart enough to limit their voice chat or friend request abilities. As long as he's not ruled a danger to society, there shouldn't be anything wrong with him participating online.

Wow... I didn't know the "Off topic" board was also the sexual predator defense coalition board... instead of posting your own filth, you could have saved the time you "claim" you didn't have and kept your mouth shut...

That is such a cheap shot.  Anyone that isn't with you is automatically cast as one of the "them". Go fuck yourself, jackhole!
