Poll Would you eat a Savory-style Morning Bun (cheese & meat croissant/muffin) for breakfast? (197 votes)

American Bruffin - Buffalo White Chicken, Blue Cheese and Hot Sauce 4%
British Bruffin - Bacon and Sharp Cheddar Cheese 23%
Canadian Bruffin - Maple Canadian Bacon and Sharp Cheddar Cheese 17%
Greek Bruffin - Spiced Beef, Feta Cheese, Spinach and Kalamata Olives 8%
Italian Bruffin - Pepperoni, Pesto and Parmesan Cheese 6%
Japanese Bruffin - Teriyaki Chicken, Scallions and Sesame 5%
Spanish Bruffin - Chorizo, Manchego Cheese and Ancho Chile 8%
Swedish Bruffin - Salmon, Herbed Goat Cheese, Capers and Spinach 5%
No way! Keep your greasy hand-full of flaky layers of meat & cheese out of my breakfast! 5%
I'd eat a McGriddle...this might be just classier, but its not a McGriddle. 7%
I already eat these every day in my city....duh. 12%

So I saw a bakery selling these breakfast items....like a stuffed cross between a croissant & muffin. Where I live they are called Morning Buns, but ore usually just butter and cinnamon sugar. Yet, these 'alternative' savory buns called Bruffins seemed interesting, yet I wonder what the average 'Duder' here would think of them. Would you eat any of the above...Bruffins? (BTW: not a fan of the name...I sort of think Morning Bun covers it even for savory selections.)

Sure, those all sound pretty good. Probably not everyday but once or twice a week as a kind of brunch thing yeah.

Lmao that bacon and cheese (the most American of combinations) is called 'British'.

E: Especially as the 'swedish' one is something you're actually very likely to find in most decent cafés here.

Troof. I'd try most of those too, but I think they'd all be improved with some form of egg.

Maybe, but this thread reminded me once again i've never had a pork bun. They look so damn good so it's only my laziness to blame.

Yep. I don't know why some people (especially Americans) get hung up on eating only "breakfast" food in the morning.

Dude I'd eat the fuck out of these. Not some picky guy.

Also down with eating anything for breakfast, including more lunchy or dinner items.

What he said.

Actually, I'm quite partial to pie/cake for breakfast, as well.

I'd definitely give them a shot. Sounds tasty, but I'm afraid some of those might be a bit too heavy for breakfast.

Fuck'n olives. Otherwise Greek would have been my number one.

Also, this shit sounds mostly great. The breakfast stigma is bullshit. Most important meal. Embrace it in whatever way you want and can.

'alternative' savory buns called Bruffins

I'm glad I lived in a civilized part of the country and can eat barbacoa tacos for breakfast everyday. If they're trafficking in "alternative" foods then they can source a cow head or two.

I eat breakfast sandwiches....these are not like sandwiches...more like a cone of goo like a cinnamon bun. We have a local British-style 'Pasty' place too, but while good they are skimpy on the filling so I avoid that place...ya can't skimp on fillings IMO. I bring this up because the Bruffins types reminded me of Pasties/Pasty filling....except in a cinnamon bun style wrapping.

Also let me add the German BRUFFIN - Frankfurter, Sauerkraut, Smoked Gouda and Horseradish Mustard. Call me weird but I get a little ill thinking of hot dogs (frankfurters) in bakery-goods.

@ripelivejam: Have you ever played Sleeping Dogs? You can't go more than ten feet in any direction without a cha siu bao shoved in your face. Or hear some random vendor call out that their pork bun is ho sek!

There are two types. One's made with your more traditional style egg-bun with a glaze that's baked.

The other is made of rice flour and is steamed. The bun itself is sweet and sticky.

I've seen frozen versions of the later at Asian stores. Don't get those, they suck. They turn crappy when microwaved and when steamed, tend to get all melty. Even if you luck out and cook it perfectly, it just doesn't taste the same.

Go find a nice Asian bakery or a good dim-sum place. Since dim-sum is the brunch of Hong Kong, then it would fall under the savory style morning bun!

I'm not big on breadish foods for breakfast. Always feels a bit heavy. Also, I wouldn't eat anything too hot. Spiced meats are fine though.

Agreed, my place called them Sandys instead of sandwich or sammie.
- two local farm eggs and Vermont cheddar on Portuguese “massa sovada” bread. (Wicked Local)
- two local farm eggs, house-cured bacon and Vermont cheddar on Portuguese “massa sovada” bread. (The Islander)
- two local farm eggs, house-made sausage, double bacon, double cheese on Portuguese “massa sovada” bread! (The Hangover)

Not sure how they do it, but the eggs must be poached in a pillow shaped container...the egg is fully cooked, but super soft, so the yolk just runs down your hand.

I would eat any of these, they sound great. Maybe not the McGriddle. I actually tend to eat cereal most days, or occasionally toast, but if I wasn't trying to balance out my diet a little better I would totally be down for some bread, cheese, salami, and such. Tend to go that way when I'm in places like Germany where it's quite common. Even with the stuff I have I go savoury, couldn't do sweet stuff for breakfast. Cereal-wise I favour stuff like Shredded Wheat, Bran Flakes, Weetabix, Shreddies. With toast I'd have Peanut Butter (but one of those more "natural" brand ones that isn't as sweet) or Vegemite. Savoury all the way!

@ripelivejam Pork buns are great. I almost got one today but the place I was at were out :( still had a good lunch but man I could go for a pork bun.

I recently cut pork out of my diet completely, so I would try the Greek, Japanese and Swedish ones just to have something new for breakfast. American sounds pretty good too, but I'm not a huge fan of Buffalo wing sauce which sounds like what they're going for.

I'd eat all of em except the ones with fish...cause I just don't care for fish. I'm one of those folks who has no problem eating chili for breakfast. If it's what I've got to eat (or even if I'm just feeling it) I'll eat it for any many.

I'd say the Italian and the Spanish seem like they would be too much for breakfast. Starting your day off with a spoonful of pesto might taste great but all of your loved ones and coworkers will hate you. With the Spanish one the only person that will hate you more than your family and coworkers will be yourself.

Overall, though, I don't have any problem with savory breakfasts.
