The intention of this thread is to inform GB's community to films they may not be aware about. A good film review is informative to the reader, it should give them an good idea of your own personal responses to it.

Mum and Dad

***

I watched this grim film last night and I am still thinking about it today. I really wish I wasn't :( I recommend that you watch it with some dudes, and not take the GF out as I stupidly did. It's really not that kind of conventional horror film. Although, if your GF is a Rose West wannabe, she will love it.

Certainly very grim stuff, but well worth watching if you like your horror. It has really good acting and direction which makes for some really painful viewing at times.

How to Embed Videos on GiantBomb

Linky, Mum and Dad looks really interesting, I'll have to check it out sometime. Last "film" I watched was Batman: Gotham Knight. I don't like scores though, so I'll just say it was pretty good. :P

You can embed them with the little picture that says HTML + next to it. You can find HTML codes next to the vid on YouTube and such.
I saw The Thing yesterday for the first time...yeah, I should have seen it before...and rated it 9/10 on IMDB. A pretty amazing film.  Also, just saw Gran Torino and would rate that 8/10. It had a few problems here and there, but one of the better films of the year and Eastwood was amazing.

The Vanguard

***

Directed by Matthew Hope, The Vanguard is yet another zombie movie amongst a million others.  Taking a bit of camera work advice from 28 Days Later and mixing it with a "Heart of Darkness" survival story like Apocalypse Now, the movie weaves a story that we've heard a million times before:  a drug that was meant to be a weapon ends up turning the majority of the world population into mindless zombies (called Savages in this movie).  One man, Max, holds the answers to everything.  In the meantime, he is being hunted down by everyone from the military to the Savages to the Resistance, a group of people who are supposed to be going up against the government.  The interesting parts of the film are the first 40 minutes, when you are trying to figure out what the fuck is going on.  There is little to no dialogue during this time frame, instead replaced with a voiceover of Max giving backstory...and it's effective in creating an atmosphere of absolute doom and despair.  Unfortunately, the movie turns into a bit of a clusterfuck once people start talking.  Granted, this is a B-movie, as the Savages look like people with makeup and paint on their faces.  The gore is pretty excellent, so those looking for some splatter won't be too disappointed.  The ending is easily one of the most open-ended and confusing things to interpret (and with a lack of solid information confirming anything on the internet, it's very much open to interpretation).

What had me caring about this movie was that it was highly focused on character development, as well as the beautiful forests and set pieces they filmed around.  It's a great way of showing a "survivalist" style, with very little buildings being shown.  Unfortunately...the settings get very repetitive and Hope starts using the same damn camera movements far too often.  There's not anything honestly scary about the film, and the acting from almost everyone but Max is pretty dry.  Despite this, Max proves to be the kind of character that, in his own right and in a "cult-classic" sense, could become an iconic role model for zombie slaying.  You've never seen camping hatchets used like this.

Unfortunately, the movie falls flat on its back thanks to a weak storyline that doesn't really go anywhere.  A little less focus on the "Oil Wars" and more focus on the characters and their struggle would've been well-deserved.  This is definitely worth a rental, and if you can find it for dirt cheap (I'd say $5 or less), then it's a great movie to add to your collection for a random watching out of boredom.  I just can't suggest the movie for much else, however.

I'm much too lazy right now to be expected to write a review. I'm sure a more enthused individual has seen the film and will do so.

The Lives Of Others

Its a german political thriller which is nevertheless completely awesome. Anyone who genuinely appreciates wonderful cinematography and fantastic acting should check this out.

Army of Darkness

***

I watched "Army of Darkness" last night with a bunch of friends. It's a movie that does what it is trying to do perfectly, being funny by being corny. A very well done comedy that is funny all throughout. But although it's a sequel to Evil Dead 1 and 2, this is hardly scary at all which I am always a little disappointed in.

Thanks Jakob for the tip ;)

2 stars: It does what it aimed to do, but I still thought it mostly sucked.

I saw "Saw V" today. And let's just say I am done with this fucking series, just please stop here, mostly since this has to be the WORST one in the series, but still, they still manage to tease your brain with the plot, but this one even lacked a truly creative plot twist the others had, talk about laziness.

It still has great blood and gore and sick traps, but Saw V is just proof that re-hashing a series like this can lead to fairly medicore results.

That film does look awesome and is a must watch for me.

The last film I saw with Mickey Rouke in it was the enjoyable drug movie 'Spun', where he played the lol worthy character "The Cook".

It's weird because in that film he acts out wrestling moves to comedic effect. Has he been a professional wrestler in real life also?. I know he did some Boxing.

That title sounds very familiar, I think I may have heard something positives about it earlier. It looks to be like my sort of thing, despite it's subject matter. I really appreciate great cinematography and fine acting.  May well check that out.  Thanks.

Man, I was so angry walking out of that theater. They tried to make the twist slick by technically having it revealed in the beginning like the other Saw movies but they did a piss poor job of hiding it. I don't know if it's sequel fatigue either since 2 and 4 were still pretty good.

He's never done it in the past, but he was trained professionally so he is doing it all perfectly. It's surprising when you see it and it really is Mickey Rourke in there doing all the head scissors whips and everything. And yeah, I imagine his boxing history has helped him.

GRAN TORINO
*****
(Note: they edited A LOT out of this trailer, i mean, some of the lines clint has, notably the one with the priest, seem like they re-filmed it just for the trailer). its difficult to tell what this movie is like because they tone it down so much for this.

I agree. An absolutely brilliant film even if it is all held up by Eastwood. None of the Korean kids could act at all. Also, best line: 'A jew, a mexican and a coloured fella go into a bar and the barman looks up and says 'Get the fuck out of my bar!'

Another great Kurosawa film, but not as good as his other masterpieces like Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Dreams or Ran.
