@Andorski: Yeah, that's a good idea since a full-sized keyboard will hang over the left edge. I also had to jam a wad of paper underneath the table to get rid of the wobble. However I've had to cut back on using my TV as the default monitor since it added too much to my electric bill (300W vs 30W for a normal monitor).

Yea I spent more then I should have on the computer itself but so far it has been the best investment I've made in gaming in a long, long time. Hooked up to my television I game on it just like one of my consoles with no issues at all. In fact I'm in no hurry to invest anything in next gen other then Nintendo Wii U for my kids and Sony's next for the exclusives. As to microsofts next system I have a big feeling I won't even worry about it.

Last time I posted in here, it was a laptop with 4GB of ram and an i3 processor, and Intel HD graphics.

Now, it's an Intel i5 3470 3.2 GHz with 8GB of RAM and an HD 7770. It's a mid-end rig at best but I like it a whole lot. I didn't have to spend a fortune on it and I don't have to spend a fortune on games.

I do hope to get a GTX 670 at some point in the future and turn this here mid-end rig into a fairly high-end one, though not necessarily one that's on the top but, hey, I don't need a top of the line rig.

EDIT: And its place looks something like this, only the laptop is gone and the PC sits next to the TV. And I have a black table that the mouse and keyboard can sit on.

I'm not sure if I'm going to wipe my SSD and put Windows 7 on it (since that's all I use; haven't booted to 8 in weeks) Or wipe 640 and use Windows 8 more. My hackintosh was more just a proof of concept for myself....

Besides adding the other 2 HDDs and swapping out a PSU right after the build, it's been the same way for almost three years.....and I haven't really seen any reason to upgrade. I can play just about any game I throw at it at High to Very High settings. Even the RAM I've never seen myself go above 4.5GB used (and that's running a Virtual Machine and multitasking)

@andorski: Gaming, but games like Total War are CPU intensive. Also I may use multiple monitors.

I built my current rig last November, I'm very happy with the GTX 660, it offers great performance for the price and MSI's cooling is just amazing, better than the reference design. I have a 1680x1050 screen so I enjoy better frame rates than someone running games at 1080p. The 450W power supply is ample as the GPU takes one power connection.

I've found it to be very capable, only game I've been unable to max so far at 1080p is metro 2033, and I suspect crisis 3 would give it a bloody nose too. like the idea of getting another 8 gig of the same ram and another GTX660 in sli, although from what im reading even that setup probably wouldn't let me max those games at 1080p /60 frames.

Is there any way you can tell without opening your rig? From what I know of computers I can only access information on my GPU and CPU. I am not really sure of what kind of motherboard I have (again, any way to tell). Properly will have to open it to make sure, cannot remember what kind of power supply it has either.

@mastorn:PC I needed for uni stuff such as autocad and 3ds max and other stuff.

New build (old one was a Phenom II x4 965 system. I posted it in here over 3 years ago), I recycled most of my parts but replaced the CPU and moved it to a smaller, more soundproof case

Here it is (I will note what is new):

• CPU: Intel i5 3570k ( new. SC2 was getting slow so I figured I might as well upgrade. Now I can comfortably run it on Ultra. Keep in mind that is a CPU intensive game, GPU isn't nearly as important).
• Motherboard: MSi Z77MA - G45 (also new. I went MSi for mobo on my old build and it seemed fine. Note this is Micro-ATX, not ATX or mini-ITX. I was gonna go mini-ITX and get a Bitfenix Prodigy but this case I got is actually a little smaller, though a bit longer)
• RAM: G.SKILL 1300Mhz 8 GB memory (from last machine. Added 4GB about a year ago)
• GPU: AMD Radeon 6950 (reused from old machine. About 2 years old now. Still a great GPU. Kinda loud though now that I am going for a quieter machine. On release of the next set of GPUs I will upgrade and get a quieter one)
• HDD: WD Caviar Black 750GB (from waaaay back when I first built my old machine. Still going strong. Crazy clicky and loud though so I am replacing it with an SSD and using it for backups instead so I don't have to access it as much)
• SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD (Getting this in the morning once the local computer store opens. My old SSD died about a month back, just out of warranty. I'm surprised how long that one lasted given it was an OCZ that was known for dying)
• HDD2: Seagate Barricuda 2TB (Newish. Got it from NCIX's Cyber Monday sale. my big storage drive. Still has over a TB left after the vast majority of my Steam stuff was installed. Not clicky unlike my other drive. Nice and quiet. I think it was like $80, which is insane. It is so good prices have returned to normal)
• PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W (from old machine. It's a trooper.)
• Mouse: Logitech G1 matte (imported from Korea. Cost me about $40 in total to get it imported. I own glossy G1s too and those are much cheaper. These matte ones are getting rare. They go for over $50 now)
• Keyboard: Filco Majestouch 2 with Red Switches (I adore this thing. Well worth the money)
• Mousepad: Razer something something Team Liquid mousepad
• Monitors: Dell U2312HM (main monitor about a year old. Really nice) and Dell 1907FP (this thing is a real winner. Got it 7 years ago and it still works great. I love 5:4 aspect monitors for web browsing, much less wasted space). In the future I will be adding a Dell U2412M or U2413, mainly for doing actual work on my Mac (16:10 is the greatest thing ever), but also for some games. I already can do triple monitors (I have the active mini-DisplayPort thinger) but one of my old monitors died so I have been going with 2 for now.
• Case: Fractal Design Define Mini (Got it on sale. I absolutely love this case. It is so small and so quiet compared to my old HAF 922. Cable management is mostly really good other than my PSU's 24-pin connector being a monster and making it tough to fit through the cabling grommet thingies. I ended up routing it around my GPU rather than through the back, which looks ugly but it works. Everything else is nice and organized though. If not for the stupid clicky harddrive I am using for a main HDD until tomorrow it would be basically silent, even with that furnace known as the 6950. This case is so nice looking)

Overall I am very happy with my new machine. It is so much quieter and doesn't seem to pump out nearly as much hot air. One touch I really like about the case is rather than having open, empty fan locations they fill them in with a sound-proofed metal plate so even less noise gets out the bottom. If I got fans I could always take them out. I just thought it was a neat touch. Thanks to a bunch of stupid giftcards I had lying around from past years the CPU only cost me around $2.95 after tax and shipping. The rest was about $220 from NCIX. Not bad at all. The Samsung SSD I am getting tomorrow will add on about $125 but I was gonna buy that either way (once you go SSD you can't go back. I've used SSDs in my Macs for 3 years now and my gaming machine for about a year. It feels wrong to use anything else).

I suppose I could also say I got a new Mac a month ago (I don't really play a lot of games on it even though it can totally run games just fine. I use it for all my schoolwork, which is almost all programming. That Unix base of OSX comes in so handy!). It is a 15" with a hi-res anti-glare screen rather than one of those Retina jobbies. I am incredibly happy with it. It runs SC2 better than my old Phenom II rig did, and it still has 7 hours of battery life. I guess for specs it has:

• Core i7 2.3Ghz (with Hyperthreading and all that mumbo jumbo. I guess you could just say it's fast and doesn't drink battery juice)
• switchable graphics which are the Intel HD4000 for light duty and a Nvidia Geforce 650m for games and heavy duty stuff (It runs Blizzard games incredibly well. Same with most of my other games I have on Steam. I was shocked how good it performed)
• 8GB 1300Mhz RAM
• 256GB ADATA SSD (I got that for my old Mac back in November, switched into new Mac when I got the machine.)
• Same insane battery life my old Mac had (a big concern I had going with a bigger, more powerful Mac. I get 7 hours on the integrated GPU. 3.5 on the discrete GPU.)

It seems I upgrade both of my computers in a 3 year cycle.

Edit: Also, Microsoft screwed up somewhere. I thought I would need to buy a new copy of Windows 7 since it was a CPU/motherboard change but I gave my current license a go just to try and it worked and activated just fine. It was nice to save that money because now I can put it toward an SSD instead.

Not the best gaming rig out there by far, but it's my first real pc, and it's a LOT better than my piece of shit laptop I had previously.
