Got it at 12:30pm, it was dead by 2:30pm.

After I got it set up, I was able to get the 1.50 update installed and my PSN ID set up. I browsed the store a little, and put in Killzone Shadow Fall.

The disc spun up, and it immediately went black. Shut down completely.

Now when I press the power button, the power indicator comes on for 3-5 seconds, then it dies again, with a single electrical click sound. It doesn't even stay on long enough for me to get to recovery mode.

Currently on hold with Sony, to see how they advise that I proceed. I'll keep you guys informed.

Post Crisis Edit:

  • I returned the defective unit to Amazon (refund), got a replacement from the Sony store. The new unit works fine.
  • Sony store said they would replace defective units, from any retailer. Confirm this with your store before trying it, though.
  • If your PS4 dies, and it is your "Primary PS4" and you cannot make your new PS4 your primary (the next problem I had), go to https://account.sonyentertainmentnetwork.com/ , sign in, go to Account > Media and Devices > Deactivate All Devices. You cannot deactivate a PS4 that is dead at this moment without doing this.

That is shitty. Hopefully its a simple fix. Like HDMI housing just being bent.

The kids and I just spent a few hours playing Lego Marvel and we had no issues either. I also purchased my games digitally this go round. Think I may just do that this generation.

I am very grateful I havent had any issues as well. Let us know about how easy the warranty process is, just in case. I have the next 5 days off from work so I will be stress testing this beast!

It seems that there is a solution that involves removing the HDD and turning it on. I'd like to get input from Sony before I try something like that, but I've been on the phone for about 40 minutes.

Worse for you. If you want to talk about we can always chat. :)

Sucks to have a faulty PS4, but call the reseller and have it replaced. It will be just a few days to have a new one, and in the end of the generation it won't matter at all, and probably you won't even remember your hassle.

Mine didn't work out of the box. I just get a flashing blue light on top and no progress no matter what I do.

Does yours turn back off after a few seconds too?

Sorry to hear that. Man do I hope this is not a common occourance like the Red Ring problem on the 360.

I also have to say that I have been laughed at for warning people about buying launch systems. This is why I wait a year before buying a game system.

Their online chatroom thing on the support site was disabled. That's how swamped Sony is right now.

How widespread is this issue? I know they said .4% but goddamn.

Amazon doesn't have any units in stock to do a replacement so all I can do is a return with them. They did offer me a $10 promo certificate though. Considering I have an Xbox One coming next week (Dead Rising 3) and the game I really need to have my PS4 before is Infamous, which comes out in March, I'll probably just do that. Major launch day bummer though. At least now I have a good excuse to pick up the new Ratchet and Clank and return Knack.

Mine never worked. During the two hour hold for support I tried different TVs, cables, etc.

They are swamped with silly calls like "i cant remember my login info for PSN". my friend who bought one with me called for that reason, and the agent said they were getting almost nothing but those particular calls

I had the same issue, but I had played other stuff. Now, was the Killzone disc in at boot or what? Because I had that exact problem when I booted the ps4 with the disc in. When I took out the disc and shut down/turned on the thing it had no issues. Then I threw in the disc and played it no problem. Did you try something along those lines?

It was up and running, and I was signed into PSN and everything. 1.50 firmware was installed.

I put the Killzone disc in, I heard it spinning, and then the whole unit just powered down.

Alright, I'm returning it to Amazon. @fearbeard is right, I can't get a replacement through Amazon, they are probably backed up through next year on preorders. I'm getting a refund.

I have more PS4s preordered, and even though I could easily go buy another one, I don't even WANT to buy one until there are clear answers as to why this happens, if it's preventable, and if I can be assured that I'm not going to be stuck in an endless loop of buying and returning units.

I've been reading a lot of forum entries about failing PS4s, anyone seen any articles about it?

You're doing the smart thing by dealing with Amazon. Sony has the worst customer support I've ever dealt with in my entire life.
