I think it's fake, but I wouldn't mind if the console actually looked like that.

Update:

SCEA representative told Kotaku that the above video was not produced or released by them.

That is one slick as hell looking box if true.

#3 Posted by TooWalrus (13178 posts) -

Jack Tretton was right, it does appear to be some sort of plastic rectangle.

#4 Posted by ChrisOVC (129 posts) -

I like it

If real, that does look rather nice

Tron Box

#7 Posted by Pr1mus (3876 posts) -

I don't see why it would be fake if it's an official Sony ad. Maybe not entirely final or Sony just probing the market to see reactions but it looks like what a box that plays games and movies and will be on a shelf under a TV would look like.

#8 Posted by rachelepithet (1391 posts) -

Hmmm with only the So in Sony visible probably fake

#9 Posted by debrislide (22 posts) -

I think it's real. Why not.

#10 Posted by believer258 (11820 posts) -

Well, the box looks pretty cool. The commercial sucks, though.

#11 Posted by MariachiMacabre (7079 posts) -

Man that's some sleek design. I really like it.

Watch the video, don't just look at the image.

#13 Posted by Bourbon_Warrior (4523 posts) -

That's a sexy console, looks like it come straight out of Tron.

#14 Posted by rebgav (1429 posts) -

Not gaudy enough.

If that's a fake teaser then the creator should be commended for hitting exactly the correct level of obnoxiousness to replicate a Playstation campaign.

#15 Edited by ThePhantomStranger (358 posts) -

I feel like I've seen that design before as a mock up fake about a billion times.

It's probably real.

#16 Posted by Sackmanjones (4689 posts) -

That thing is futuristic and sexy as hell. I hope it's real

#17 Edited by Daneian (1228 posts) -

I would connect that box to my tv.

Exactly what I was thinking. Its exactly the kind of dumb sony would go for.

It's plausible, but I'm inclined to say that this is just a well produced fake.

God I hope the console doesn't glow like that.

#21 Posted by hollitz (1507 posts) -

Don't really give a fuck about what a console looks like, but that does have an aesthetic charm.

#22 Posted by ElixirBronze (424 posts) -

The closeup shots of the console looks suspiciously much like a 3D model to me... Also the fact that they spend more time shooting closeups of people's faces than they do the console itself seems stupid to me.

#23 Edited by Emperor_Norton (42 posts) -

That is one high-tech looking panini maker

#24 Posted by killacam (1284 posts) -

would.

#25 Posted by TheHBK (5475 posts) -

That looks pretty small if real.

#26 Posted by jozzy (2042 posts) -

I think this is real. And it might even be a planned leak by Sony to get a little extra publicity before the upcoming Microsoft event.

Looks about the same size as the PS3 Slim, based on the usb ports. Maybe 10% larger.

#28 Posted by Darji (5294 posts) -

Totally Fake. There is no way that would happen like this. It is most likely some really good fan made trailer

#29 Posted by MiniPato (2735 posts) -

Looks fake to me. Anytime I see superfluous glowy shit on a console design, I always assume it's a fake because I don't think any kind of electronics product designer would waste energy to make a big line glow across your console.

#30 Edited by SomeJerk (3219 posts) -

It's a kinda-sorta welldone though mistake-heavy fake video, but the most telltale sign for me was that it wasn't in line with other Sony home electronics designs and frankly, looks like shit aesthetically (speaking as one of the artsy types who enjoy hours of fine art museums).

Do we even know if they're going to keep the PSU internal? They were the only ones doing it last time around. The chassis should be done by now anyway, goal is to start production in June. Might see something on the 25th unless there's a Chinese factory-leak.

e: I think my PS3 Slim 120 is loud, but it's like within arms reach and I play it on the monitor in front of me. Compared to 360s over the years it's really not bad - PS3s do the crazy thing and carry internal power supplies! Imagine how much space, money and decibels could be saved..

The question people should be asking: Will the first line of PS4s sound like a jet while running?

#32 Posted by Ramone (2963 posts) -

That looks pretty sweet.

#33 Edited by 49th (2735 posts) -

That looks extremely cool. I wouldn't mind having that next to my TV if it is indeed real.

Tron box looks cool, probably will be annoying and distracting in the dark though.

#35 Edited by joshwent (2175 posts) -

No glowy shit please! Having electronics in the room where you sleep makes you appreciate a lack of superfluous bright lights.

Well the first line of PS3s didn't so let's hope that continues.

The 360 though...

Blue LEDs means it fucking fast

#38 Edited by BaneFireLord (2928 posts) -

That ad looked like a trailer for a horror movie, but the box looks pretty slick. I sincerely doubt it's fake.

EDIT: Why would someone put so much effort into faking something like this?

#39 Posted by MiniPato (2735 posts) -

I also think it's fake cause Sony loves to montage their games and there was only Infamous Second Sun in that video. Also didn't look like that great a promo.

#40 Edited by Seppli (10251 posts) -

I'm in love with that design. Simple. Elegant. Yet that LED-rim gives it a hint of attitude. I want the PS4 so bad.

#41 Posted by Hunter5024 (5640 posts) -

It looks pretty awesome, and if waiting until now allowed them to come up with such a cool design, then totally worth it. But with those Tron lights, I guess I'm not gonna want to leave it on overnight.

#42 Edited by MiniPato (2735 posts) -

Sony says it's a fake.

#43 Posted by CrossTheAtlantic (1145 posts) -

It's a fake.

I sort of like the look, though. However, I'm not sure how those Tron lights would actually work in practice.

#44 Posted by Lego_My_Eggo (1029 posts) -

I think its fake, It just doesn't seem to fit Sony's other ads, but wouldn't mind it if that was really it. I think it was the last E3 or Tokyo Game Show that some Japanese company made there own "leaked" PS4 advertisement or something, so i wouldn't doubt if this was the same thing happening.

@joshwent: @colourful_hippie: @djou:

LED stuff is usually highly customizable. You certainly can turn it off. Such things can be capable of glowing in different colors. It could pulse rhythmically on boot-up/shut down. Do ambient lighting stuff. Regardless, if such a thing is part of Sony's box, it will be optional, and very likely customizable too.

@fluxwavez: @minipato: @crosstheatlantic:

From how professionally it's produced, it's likely a pitch of an external marketing agency to Sony. Likely Sony didn't give away the final design of the box, but just an internal mock-up. Doesn't mean the actual design is far removed from what we see here. It's highly likely that's the direction Sony is going for.

Indeed. That was quick.

I must say, it was a pretty well-produced fake. I wish fakes could be called out by companies this fast all the time, but of course when you do that, you also run the risk of letting everybody know when you have a real leak.

P.S. Sony's offical denial is ambiguous in regards to the box itself. The Kotaku article says...

Alas, a representative from Sony's American division has confirmed to Kotaku that this isn’t an official clip, saying that it wasn't produced or released by them.

The box isn't explicitly labeled as fake, only the video is.

#49 Edited by MonkeyKing1969 (2700 posts) -

Pretty obviously faked since the imagery was a bit too "obvious" with the Triangle, Circle Square, Xross and the actors were all sitting down in fairly empty environs....all of it was at a level someone could fake easily in a bedroom. Sony would have put those people in 'Ikea style' living rooms and moved the camera more and showed people "pretending" playing a games, etc.

#50 Edited by Blu3V3nom07 (4203 posts) -

They only had Infamous. If it was real it'd have so much Knack, it wouldn't even be funny..
