Twitch now banning non-gaming related PS4 Playroom streams

One of the coolest developments of the twitch streaming on PS4 was that there was a surge of people making up makeshift Talk Shows using the free Playroom game that comes installed on every PS4 along with the Playstation Camera. It was super quirky and stupid fun, the little ball robot makes for a good sidekick to a talkshow host.

As with all cool things on the internet, that dream was ruined when a couple got completely wasted on camera and the husband began taking off his wife's clothes on camera while she was passed out.

So now Twitch has made their move to say that all non-gaming content streamers will be banned from the service from now on.

That Sucks.

All of them? Just because of that one strip show? That seems like a dumb move.

Then again, I can understand it being just tangentially related to video games and if the content has nothing to do with what the website's about...

It sounds like you're blowing this out of proportion. You could make a talk-show that's gaming related if you wanted to, and if you don't want to talk about games, Twitch is absolutely a gaming-dedicated site and I'm sure there's a more appropriate service out there.

It sort of sucks but this is always what happens to nice things on the internet. Some dicks have to ruin it.

They aren't banning all Playroom streams, just the ones that aren't about games. Getting drunk on stream and then stripping your passed out associate seems like a clear-cut case of non-gaming content.

Does that mean if it were video-game characters getting drunk and stripping that would be acceptable? We could see some next-gen level machinima going on if that's the case.

@ryanwhom While that would be nice, hiring a team of people to moderate every playroom at all hours of the day just to confirm that all the content is above board seems a bit overkill. At the end of the day as soon as one of these incidents happen it makes Twitch, Sony and the integration of this service look bad.

It isn't that there is anything wrong with people get naked on camera, although the husband doing it to a passed out wife...is rather...forceful. Specifically for a willing online audience. The issue more so is that the Twitch service on PS4 is a gaming exclusive stream. If this couple wants to get naked on camera, there are TONS of places on the internet to do that. Why does it have to be on PS4? That isn't what Sony or Twitch are about. So just banning accounts that make non gaming related streams makes sense. It isn't like they are banning people for badmouthing Sony games or something crazy. People can still talk foul and curse and all that other nonsense. So long as the context is one of gaming.

It is in Twitch's "Terms of Service" agreement that they can kill any broadcast or feed they don't like.

Besides, if you really wanted to do this sort of thing, the Internet has been been innovating here for decades now to make it cheap and easy to setup this sort of thing and I suspect the payout is much better than the ad revenue from Twitch.

This is the right move for them. They are just a gaming site this is hardly even games related. They focus just on games and there is nothing wrong with that.

What if twitch was much more and they include different live streams from around the world. News, medicine, animals, science sports and entertainment. What if they named it after a common name like justin with a domain of television. What a wonderful world that'd be.

I suspect there will be more and more weird shit like this as streaming becomes more accessible and common to a wider audience.
