In preperation for the new Pokémon, I charged up the dusty old 3DS. Went to the store without checking the release date...damn. So I booted up Y too see where I was, and got hooked again. Now I didn't finish Y, I don't think I've ever finished any of them. Why am I getting the new one? I think I'm going to stick.. And save my 40$. Anything BETTER in this one Duders that will change my mind?

It's really easy to get caught up in Pokemon hype. I was in a similar situation to you when X/Y came out, I remember playing Red fondly back on the Game Boy and thought I would pick up a newer version. Then I remembered that I never even got to the second gym in the original game and spent some time on youtube watching "lets plays" of Pokemon.... Pokemon is a dreadfully boring game, and I honestly don't know how it's gotten so popular. :|

There's a few new Mega evolutions in ORAS but if you didn't get around to finishing X and Y, you might as well do that. Kalos (and every other region, of course) is way better than Hoenn anyway, and you can always just get ORAS if you still have the Pokebug after finishing up X and Y.

The only reason I'm getting ORAS is the new Mega evolutions, the insane amount of legendaries that are in the game (basically all of them excluding event Pokemon) and the Delta Episode where you fly to space and fight Deoxys on the back of a mother fucking Rayquaza. That's just far too insane to not get the game for me.

If you've never finished any of them, of course not, why would you waste your money?

I don't blame you for not finishing Y though, X/Y are maybe the worst games in the franchise so far.

I would at least wait a bit before getting it. As of right now, thanks to embargos and what-not, we know very little about the postgame content. So far, a bunch of legendaries, new megas, and the Delta episode, which is a postgame side story, are the only things that have been confirmed to be in the game and have already been revealed. The main game itself is more or less the same as the original Ruby and Sapphire. If those things float your boat, then yeah, sure you should get it. But as for myself, I'm waiting to hear if there's anything we've not heard about yet. Reviewers are giving conflicting information about the postgame. Some say it's huge, some say it's as lacking as X/Y's was. None are allowed to talk in any detail about it which could be worrisome.

I don't know, it depends on what you look for in a pokemon game. I personally am super bummed about seeing no sign of the Battle Frontier, but that's not everyone's cup of tea.

I'm at that crossing road as well with ORAS. X/Y was so phenomenal with all the updates, multiplayer and graphics that it was the first pokemon game in a long time that I actually dug an insane amount of hours to, I think I put in about 200 hours into it. I'm not much into the multiplayer battling or going in depth on the pokemon IV's and nature but that game had a charm to it that got me hooked. Even now I'll turn on the game for a few just to get any of the recent giveaway pokemon from promotions out there.

This game coming out a year after X/Y kinda reminds me of my feelings of Black and White 2, it's a little too soon for me. For me the first pokemon on the newest Nintendo handheld is usually a must grab to see what updates have been added while the others ones I tend to skip till the "Defined" versions come out. Besides Persona Q comes out 4 days after ORAS and that game is selling at 50 bucks!

You're probably better off sticking with X/Y for now. ORAS doesn't really throw a whole lot of major improvements over X and Y, and is even a downgrade in some areas. (They've gotten rid of character customization, and it's unlikely to return in any non-Kalos Pokemon game which is pure bullshit.)

Honestly, I think I'm only getting it because I have so much nostalgia for Ruby and Sapphire. Pokemon has quietly become an annualized franchise, and I don't like that. I guarantee there's going to be an X2 and Y2 next year, which is where I'll draw the line. (Or probably not, because I'm a idiot)

I'm not getting ORAS because I put in 360~ hours into Y raising competitive pokes, breeding shinys, and battling folks from across the globe. That was the most Pokemon I've played in over a decade, so I'm probably content for another 5 years or so.

Oh, and fuck the lack of character customization. The trumpets suck, too!

If anyone is interested, a lot of the new stuff in the game has been leaked already.

As for the new games, I'm looking forward to them for sure. As someone that has dumped over 300 hours into Y, I'm ready for a change of scenery. Also I loved the Gen 3 games to death.

As a person who used to like Pokemon I feel the same. I played the shit out of Yellow and Silver version (I was around the "appropriate" age at the time 9 to 11), but ever since then I could not get into Pokemon like I used to. Sans Black/White and it's sequel I have been buying a version of pokemon since then and have gotten bored of it at around the 5 hour. Hell I even bought a copy of the Silver remake on DS (seeing as it was my favorite game I felt like I had to have it) and I still got bored once I hit the 4 gym leader. Good for those people who love and have stuck with the franchise, but yeah I guess I have gotten different tastes and just can't get into the games anymore.

At this point, every new Pokemon release is exactly the same game as the last one. Every single one. Now that game is fantastic, but I'm so tired of playing it. They need to make some fundamental changes to those games if they want me to buy the next installment in the franchise. And I mean more than adding another 100+ Pokemon whose names I stopped caring about after Gen 3. Where's my open world Pokemon? Or my Pokemon MMO? Unfortunately those games won't come anytime soon because these games are easily millions of dollars of profit for Nintendo. I just wish they'd change the formula a bit.

Put Pokemon on Android/iOS and add a social element. Nintendo just made a billion dollars.

Another reason why I might not get ORAS, I've never beaten this thing yet. I had dreams once, where I'd eventually beat this one and then eventually do cartridge transfer after cartridge transfer till I had all the pokemon in X/Y.

How... foolish I was.

I would have recommended it if battle frontier was in it but it isn't.

Edit: I should probably clarify, it sounds like the game is suited to those who want the nostalgia of playing through ruby and sapphire or want to play them for the first time. It doesn't sound like the game does enough new and interesting things to be worth a purchase this soon after X/Y if you found yourself getting bored of X/Y.

I'll be getting it, just not at launch. Ruby is still my favorite Pokemon game in the series, but my backlog still includes most of Platinum, and all of Black, White 2, and SoulSilver. I was gonna try to burn through them after I finished Y, but man, I just can't sit down and play Pokemon for infinity hours like I used to.

Hmmmmm

As someone who didn't get X or Y, is it worth me jumping in to this? I tried playing Pokemon White a year or so after it came out and it didn't grab me like past entries. Did X and Y change things up enough to make it worth checking these out? Also I loved Ruby to death at the time it came out, so I am all for trumpets and expanses of water.

So they actually ran out of colors after black and white?
