Quest hint thread is go!

...Yep!

I'll just leave this here:

@xanavi said:

Aww, I was going to make a hint thread but you already made the topic! Anyways, here are some hints!

Don't Bother With Textbooks

  • Dinosaurs with frickin' artillery cannons attached to their heads.
  • There are jet-packs, and aliens and you fight up walls using something called "vertical cover"!
  • We fight, not for tyranny, but for freedom!

Not that Brad

  • This guy's been everywhere in GB coverage these past few weeks, including a hilarious QLEX which may or may not be the focus of this quest!

No Country For Old Gundams?

  • It's got mech right in the name!
  • You thought a mobile trench was a weird name for a mech? Check out my Blingdog!

Tip of the Hat

  • GAAAAAAAABE!
  • If the game mechanics weren't so different I'd think this was a Professor Layton knock-off! Funny, this game features mechs too!
  • Man, this princess has really let herself go.

so mechwarrior 2, 3, and 4 aren't mech games according to this quest :\

#3 Posted by Rinkalicous (1337 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Stuck on the changing history one. Tried so many that seemed obvious to me, but nada.

#4 Posted by s7evn (1072 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Ugh, this quest is frustrating. The limited answers they look for completely throw it off since so many games include alternate history and don't work. Also, I would argue majora's mask is a game that should count towards the hat one (along with SMG).

#3!

Not really easy to give hints. I'll just leave it at: They are very concept heavy.

Textbook:

  • The name of a certain double agent's town.
  • This Russian ruler fights little green men.
  • Cronosphere. That is all.

I was upset over WarTech not working. That's one of the best mech games!

How in the world does Assassin's Creed not count for playing fast and loose with history?

#8 Posted by takua108 (1464 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Can't get "Don't Bother With Textbooks." I have two of the three, but a ton of ones that should work for the third (such as Day of the Tentacle, Darkest of Days, TimeSplitters, and more) don't work. :(

#9 Posted by Sammo21 (2001 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

@Marz: neither is steel batallion or metal gears solid or armored core...

#10 Edited by MaFoLu (1824 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Verticality is something you should have in mind when working on the historical one.

There are also some concept pages that can get very helpful for this whole quest.

By far my best showing ever.

#12 Posted by Sammo21 (2001 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

@takua108: here's a hint.... when you call someone a terrorist there's a chance someone might call them something else. Game from last generation.

Mu thoughts exactly???

I remember one of the answers as being Stalin versus "some aliens," possibly from another planet. I forgot the other ones though, since I just middle-clicked everything.

Seriously. Who the fuck makes these quests?!

#16 Posted by PLWolf (870 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

How the hell are the Kefling games not a part of the Hats one. ugh, these get more infuriating every time.

#17 Posted by Tesla (1526 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

This is one of the worst quests as far as answers go, which makes the whole thing frustrating instead of fun. I say forget about giving hints and just give the answers.

#18 Posted by ElectricBoogaloo (318 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

The alternate reality concept page is your friend.

#19 Edited by theMockingNoob (171 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I've got cake and sappers, can't figure out the third hat game.

Edit: D'oh, that was obvious.

#20 Posted by TurboMan (5506 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I'm sorry, but whoever wrote the history quest did an awful job....

Darkest of Days

Resistance

Resistance 2

Assassins Creed 1&2

Bionic Commando

Wolfenstein

all better candidates than 2/3 that I found

#21 Posted by Make_Me_Mad (2712 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

The fact that Metal Gear Solid, a game revolving ENTIRELY around a literal walking tank doesn't count for this quest means I probably won't bother completing it.

#22 Edited by LinuxScouser (70 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I only found one in Tip of the Hat so far. The fact Kid Chameleon isn't one of them astounds me.

Edit: And suddenly found them. Kind of felt like needle in the haystack to do that to be honest.

#23 Posted by ShadowVirus (775 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

48, pretty stupid that half the mech games didn't work, and Bioshock counts for the rewritten history and Resistance doesn't?

Maybe a launch title for the Nintendo 64? Or maybe a game that involves feeding cake to a princess? Or maybe one that has a storefront for buying hats?

#25 Edited by Krakn3Dfx (2089 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

For "Don't Bother With Textbooks"

...go back in time and kill one of the greatest scientific minds in history...

A couple of games I picked didn't work, and then did work a minute later, like one about a pudgy girl which a need to be hauled around.

Not too hard, just went through a bunch of Mech games and alternate history games to find the last few I needed.

#27 Posted by jozzy (2033 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

How about Black Ops, can't believe it.

Quoted for truth. I realize it would be no fun if everything was as simple as the first 3 keyword searches, but the bummer about game-quests is that they inherently do not reward knowledge because so many games fit those clues.

My advice is always to use the wiki pages themselves rather than the search box. Sadly it always comes down to middle-clicking a whole slew of new tabs and seeing if I hit something, but it works more often than not.

Quests are about using the site well. Trivia is about knowing trivia. ;)

(edit: #203, I stopped to fix some random wikis)

To make things worse, Genji: Day of the Blades didn't make the list. You know, the one game that advertised its historical accuracy thirty seconds before meme history?

I'm missing one hat

already gotten the obvious ones

I dont know what games gave me this. I went trough like 20 pages on the mech page before i got it. Well. Thats logical.

#34 Posted by Crono11 (1619 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

For the hat one I hear that Tetris with hats is pretty awesome.

#35 Edited by RazielCuts (1724 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

This is why the Quest system is broken. It's like playing an old school Adventure game, if you don't think the same way the developer designed the puzzles you're never going to solve them, even if your way of answering them is totally right.

Have gone through about 10 games in the mech variety from this database and none are coming up.

#92 - I suck....

#37 Edited by MKHavoc (1305 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Still need 2 games for tip of the hat.

For anyone stuck on Don't Bother With Textbooks, try looking for:

1) a game about some Liberty Warriors

2) a game that takes place somewhere under the sea

3) an old prequel to a series of rts games.

#38 Posted by HiImMikeCruz (203 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

There should only be 1 answer for Hats.

#39 Posted by TekZero (2585 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Pretty easy so far, having a little trouble with the Hats one.

#42 Posted by PositivelyGreg (64 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Yeah, I'm with those grumpy about the history one. Heck, Civilization is about as loose as history gets.

Still, for all the bad things that qualify and better ones that don't, I'm a bit ashamed for how long it took me to remember that time Einstein went back in time to kill Hitler. I guess THAT counts as pretty loose with history.

#43 Posted by rmanthorp (3352 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

Man that took me way to long... A LOT of obvious choices being missed out >.>

Kind of annoying...

#44 Posted by Pokalapoketl (49 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

That one with the Mechs is complete BS. Some of the most obvious titles don't work.

#45 Posted by wafflez (501 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

I have gone through at least half the games listed under the mech page.. and still only have ONE D:

#46 Posted by xanavi (173 posts) - 1 year, 11 months ago

For what it's worth, I think the choices they've got in there are fine. >.>

Command and Conquer: Red Alert you would think is the easiest and best example of historical inaccuracies, but no. :(

#170. Geez that was messed up.
