How to reduce demand for industrial?

I hate industrial, it cause a great deal of pollution and just ruins the town, sure it's better later on once your sims are more educated, but I just don't want it at all in the beginning. Increasing the taxes on the industrial doesn't lower the demand. Anyway I can promote commercial and just get rid of industrial?

I tend to just ignore it. Maybe build a small strip of it somewhere. But as far as I know there isn't anything specifically you can do to lower it except....well.... Building it

I think a solid dose of Einstürzende Neubauten or Skinny Puppy should remedy the problem.

Build less commercial. The game operates on a very simple loot, industry needs residence, residence needs commercial, commercial needs industry. One of the things I realized pretty quickly that I tended to build way way more commercial than needed. You only need about 1/5 comm/residence, if even that.

I'm getting to the point where I just ignore the RCI (for the most part) and look more at the breakdown of Sims. If I notice there are a lot of low wealth unemployed sims, I build Industry or Commercial (depending on the RCI). Too much Industry can result in them complaining there is no place to ship the freight and could result in too many jobs and not enough sims. I tend to follow that breakdown and my cities are starting to flourish.

The breakdown numbers are definitely useful. I pretty much just make sure that unemployment is 0 and I have enough of whatever type of wealth working. More often than not you can really slim down on Industry, just make sure you give them room to expand since those factories can get pretty big. This should satisfy most Commercial, but if there aren't enough goods to go around you'll have issues. That's when you need to start bringing in tourists so some of those shops turn into hotels. However, I think it's nearly impossible to get away with no industry at all. People in your town want to shop, and they need things to buy. Shops need a place to then get those things. You can outsource a lot of it, over time, but then you'll have so much traffic that you'll rather have a bit of industry then deal with constant jams.

Also, feel free to ignore the RCI bar graph for industry later on. They have very low standards and thus will pretty much will want to move in anywhere there is people.

I have a giant Industrial sector with maxed tech level and educated workers. Still have a big yellow bar telling me it's not enough. Ignore it.

@chainreaction01: Yea, a city I built last night only has maybe 3-5% industry in it and the bar is maxed, but my unemployment rate is high and freight is going unsold (sending to Trade Depot instead). You can definitely have a small amount of industry and get by.

The RCI indicator is misleading. I had a good third of my city zoned and filled as industrial and the bar was still maxed out. However, hopefully people are realizing that there are two indicators for each bar. There is a light and dark of each color, the light being the demand in your city specifically and the darker being the demand in the region overall. Don't get the two mixed up or you may find yourself trying to satisfy demand for the entire region.
