I didn't really think any of those trailers looked good, but I've been totally checked out of this franchise since Sonic Adventure 2.

I kept saying that it wasn't looking great. Just slow paced with poor level design. Sucks, I loved Generations, man.

The part that people always tend to forget is that "but this one looks like it'll be good!" is not a sign of a game breaking out of the Sonic Cycle, it's part of the Sonic Cycle.

Hump a dump sonic cycle. The worst part of all this is that the phrase Sonic Cycle continues to be a thing and people will continue to dismiss anything that looks promising based entirely on that without any actual thought while screaming "SEE I WAS RIGHT" - not that I can blame them when this is how things turn out.

I'm really surprised and disappointed.

Yeah, I guess, I'm mostly just annoyed because this is the first time I've actually been interested in a new Sonic game, and yet it looks like it's the worst major (retail) release in years.

Sonic Generations was ok for a nostalgic trip. I think that gave me my Sonic fill for the next 20 years.

I thought Generations was great, I still might pick this up when it hits the bargain bin.

But what about God is a Geek? They gave it an 8/10!
And ONM did the same thing basically!

@zeforgotten: I personally go to ONM for all my unbiased reviews for games only coming out on Nintendo consoles.

And yet there were still peeps acting like this one was going to be different. And they'll do it for the next one, too. Ryan was spot on. Watch.

I did always think it looked like a step back from Generations when I saw the game's trailers. Not that I thought that Generations was great or anything, but getting there. Looking at some video reviews though, it really does look great visually.

There are a lot of 7 and 8/10s on in that list, which doesn't strike me as horrible in any way. Not sure what to think here.

Based on what I played at Comic Con last weekend, I'm not surprised the scores are all over the place. The physics and controls don't exactly function like you'd think a Sonic game would and they felt really loose. And the levels they had in the demo had some really cool stuff going on in there, but most of the stuff in the environment or the other paths felt superfluous. I was hoping it was one of those things where it would make more sense with some more time with it, but it looks like the reviews are just justifying a lot of those fears I had. It seems like a game with a lot of good ideas but the execution isn't quite there. I'll probably still pick it up, though.

Actually I am surprised about the 3DS scores - I played that at Comic Con too and it seemed much better. Controls were way tighter.

There seem to be some good reviews in there so I'm not sure that, judging by your evidence, this seems like an unmitigated disaster. Smoosh em all together and it looks middling.

On a more serious note, most of those reviews seem to be giving the game low scores because of a "learning curve".
So Sega here's one for the future.
People want their hands held even more than that Prince of Persia game that literally held the main characters hand whenever he did something bad.

How is that a bummer? How could you have possibly thought this was going to be anything but garbage?

Doesn't this happen with most Sonic game though? (People get real hyped then are disappointed)

Because as already mentioned in the thread, Sonic Colours and Generations before it were both well received.

I didn't realize people thought those trailers looked good. They seemed to be trying to sell you this game based on the world of Sonic, the 'deadly six' and Sonic's battitude. Unlike Color's or Generations, there was no real sensation of speed in any of those trailers. Sometimes I actually forget people dig modern Sonic like... as a character.

Man, what a disappointing year for Sega. First they seemed to have underwhelming review scores for their big name strategy games. Company of Heroes 2 may not be considered a universal disappointment, but wasn't considered as good as the first. Rome II was considered a disaster launch that effected the way people reviewed the game (lowest scored Total War game).

And now Sonic is becoming a disappointment with Lost World, which stinks because the Wii U needs quality exclusives. Then again, should we be disappointed when the Sonic Cycle has some scientific proof that this would happen?

I'm at the end of the game and I wrote some of my other thoughts in a blog. I think some of the lower scoring reviews are a little harsh. The Destructoid review feels like the most accurate. I have had fun with the game and there is a bunch of stuff to like about it, but the most disappointing thing is how it feels like a step back from Generations and Colours.

Averages out to be about a 6 for the 3DS version and a 6.5 for the Wii U version. Not necessarily terrible, but not amazing either. If you like Sonic, chances are you'll like these games.

At this point, does anyone really expect a good Sonic game?

But God damn, just when things were looking good for the franchise. This could have been a praised title. It should have been!

So, if not even Nintendo's involvement can bring it back to stardom, what can? Nintendo made even Silicon Knights not only not shit, but great. This franchise isn't beyond redemption I don't think, but I guess it takes a lot to bring out the full potential in it.

It's probably as simple as a change of developer (that's not Bioware and won't make an RPG out of it).

This is the first I have even heard of this game, and it's that it's not very good. This does not surprise me.

Call me crazy, but the fact that they slowed it down was the entire reason I was excited for this game.

Meh. I don't own a Wii U so I'm not super bummed. I'll stick with Sonic Adventure 2, CD, and Generations whenever I finally cave and buy that game.

I dunno if you guys know, but the Sonic Cycle hasn't really been an applicable thing since 2006, what with Unleashed, Colors, Generations, and arguably Sonic 4 episode 2 (and for some people, 1 as well) ranging from pretty good to great.

Still going to pick it up once I finally get a Wii U. I learned a while ago that internet reviews often time reflect qualities I couldn't give a damn about. From what I played from the demo, it was a blast.

Looks like the Sonic Cycle continues again. Still, I'm going to pick it up. I still think it looks cool.
