With Nintendo's obsession with 2D plats, why no SMB2 sequel?

Nintendo is going all out with 2d platformers with

• NSMB 2
• NSMB Wii
• NSMB U
• New Luigi Super U
• Kirby Yarn
• Yoshi Yarn
• DKC Returns / DKC Returns 3D
• DKC Returns Ice World
• Kirby games galore
• Mario vs DK series
• Super Princess Peach
• Wario Master of Disguise
• and other beloved classics

so where's the new Doki Doki Panic aka SMB2? The game was actually good! We got Super Mario Advance but that was the end of it.

I can understand about it contradicting Mario series conventions; creating a singular identity and all that. (players will jump on an enemy and freak that the enemy doesn't die) But there is a simple solution to this, make it in a different franchise or give it a main character other than Mario -- such as Toad! Yes, imagine Toad starring in SMB2 Returns! Your thoughts on this please.

I love me some SMB2, and I like your idea of Toad starring in his own game. Toad and Princess were the two best characters in SMB2. Maybe something like the two of them going through a SMB2 themed game to rescue the Mario Bros?

Its their rainy day "stuffs not going so well at Nintendo-Land" plan.

I would rather a Super Mario Bros. 4/World 2, but eh.

I think Super Mario Bros 4 would be kinda cool.

When The Year of Birdo falls upon us, that'll be the first project in the pipeline.

And it will fall upon us, mark my words. Great horns will trumpet from the heavens, and the sky will crack open.

That's planned to occur right after The Year of Fawful.

God I want these things to exist so badly.

But you know who really deserves a year? Fuckin' Shy Guy. He gets no respect. He's the Rodney Dangerfield of the Mario universe.

I'd be super okay with this, but only if it's called Super Mario USA 2.

When does Goomba get his day year?

A game where you have to try to save the lives of all Goombas on the level from being stomped by Mario?

Mario 3D Land 2 is the 3D version of what you're looking for, so it's not hard to imagine them taking that formula back to "2D" for the next game.

@mariachimacabre: Now that's an idea that I think we can all get behind. Shy Guys, after all, directly influenced the Scream franchise [citation needed].

Hell, I was a pretty shy guy myself back in those days, and prior to SMB2, I had no video game character to look up to and call my own. Okay, I had the mailbox from Zork, but everybody started growing concerned at how much paper I ate. The mask and robe I donned post-Shy Guy didn't soothe their fears any, but at least my diet improved.

I guess it wasn't very popular.

I don't think I ever defeated the first boss. I beat all the other Mario All-Stars games and the original versions multiple times (Except for The Lost Levels. I only played through that once.), but Mario 2 never appealed to me. I wouldn't be interested in a sequel.

Doki Doki Panic is like the kid who gets picked last at gym. So unfair.

So... you mean pretty much exactly what they should be doing right the fuck now.

The 2D games are easier to make? I dunno, but look at it this way....

2007 - Super Mario Galaxy
2010 - Super Mario Galaxy 2
2011 - Super Mario 3D Land
2013 - Super Mario 3D World

I mean each of those games is a fully 3D Mario platformer and each of them has been hit critically and commercially ... I think one every few years is fine.

As for who stars in them, does it really matter that much? If Super Mario Galaxy 2 starred Princess Toadstool instead of Mario who would care? And they way it is now each character has a certain feel -- Donkey Kong games are usually harder (IMHO) and have more moving levels (mine carts, rocket barrels) plus animals to ride, Kirby is about changing your play style based on what enemies you're fighting, Mario is straight platforming with suits to mix things up, Yoshi feels more like exploring and ranged attacks...

tl;dr - If they make a new platformer starring a side character it should be a big departure from the Mario formula or it's not worth the effort and losing the built-in marketing that Mario brings
