Poll Let's settle this with a good old fashioned poll. Are you 'For' or 'Against' Yoshi's Island? (582 votes)

For 74%
Against 26%

Yay or nay?

One of the best and funniest debates going on at Giant Bomb. I'm glad this discussion happened, because like Patrick, I was also unaware that so many people actually disliked Yoshi's Island. I personally think Yoshi's Island is a great game is all aspects: music, art, gameplay. It's fantastic!

It's a fantastic game. At the same time, it cannot be compared to Super Mario World. They completely different games.

I've never understood this logic. I can compare anything to anything, it doesn't matter how different they are, I still know which one I like better. But yeah, it's a good thing this thread isn't about comparing the game to SMW or it would be a much different argument.

Which bombcast is it where they have this argument anyways?

I believe the argument starts on the 4-23-13 podcast and continues to the 4-30-13 podcast. It's mostly Jeff ranting about how horrible the game is and Patrick thinking he's insane. However, Patrick doesn't start actually articulating his defense in favor of Yoshi's Island until the the latest Encyclopedia Bombastica.

Huh? Yoshi's Island is great. I can see maybe debating its place among Nintendo's classics, but debating whether it's a good game or not is silly.

It's silly because it's such a bad game. Opinions!

It's my opinion that it's silly to opine that Yoshi's Island is a bad game.

I never played Yoshi's Island, though I do own a SNES copy of it (I bought it a year or two ago to discover my SNES was broken). After watching Patrick play and talk about it, however, I am going to go replace my SNES. Yoshi's Island seems like a great game. It is no Super Mario World, but then again I have found that no other Mario game hits that height, so why bother comparing?

Surely there is some kind of law against that.

Yoshi's Island is better than Super Mario World.

HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

This, and I would also like to submit Super Mario Bros. 3 to the list of Mario games that are better than Super Mario World.

And Super Mario 64. And Sunshine. And the original. And 3D Land. And the first New Super Mario Bros.

I never got the fervor for Super Mario World, I always thought it was just all right. Decent. OK. Fine. But then, my opinion is invalidated when I say that Galaxy couldn't hold my attention either, though that may have something to do with the fact that a) I hate Wii remotes and b) the whole spinning around planets thing made me kinda dizzy, something that no other game has ever done before.

From a technical standpoint, Yoshi's Island is pretty god damn amazing.

As for actually playing it, it's okay.

I didn't even know there was hatred towards Yoshi's Island. It's one of those few SNES games that I can still appreciate today. I love how almost every level feels entirely different and there's so much going on. I don't think it's better overall than Super Mario World, but it's much more special despite it's problems.

Yoshi's Island would be more fun to play without auto scrolling levels.

Every game would be more fun without auto scrolling levels. But Yoshi's Island loves the shit out of them, and goes out of it's way to make them painfully slow.

For forever.

Possibly my favourite platformer of all time. And I love platformers.

Also one of the best final boss themes of any game.

It's no Yoshi's Story(well ok, mostly the remix of the YS theme) but I'm totally for it.
Besides, baby Marios constant whining and crying like a baby has also prepared me for internet forums, so that's a plus as well.

Because... well, it's bolded. A lot of the ideas in Galaxy are sound, but I didn't feel a drive to get over those two things above. And the dizzy thing is especially mystifying. I've even played the port of Marathon Durandal on 360, which was infamous for making stomachs churn, and I had no problems.

I want to give it another shot at some point in time, though.

Neutral since I've never played it. But after watching Patrick's video, I'm definitely leaning towards "for." I mean...you touch the fuzzy and get dizzy.

I voted "for". I haven't played it much and I think the art style looks way too rough now, though it was probably mind blowing back in the day. But I love how different it is and I love watching speedrunners run the game.

@believer258: Haha, I don't know how I didn't read that. Fair enough, the wii motes never bothered me much because the only motion thing that really mattered was shaking the wii mote which is pretty annoying. I can see how planets could become stomach churning as well.

If all video games strive for perfection, Yoshi's Island has come the closest.

Where did the argument originate? I listened to the most recent Bombcast today at work and it wasn't there. Did I skip passed some of it? Or is it in another podcast?

I'm not a huge fan of the GBA version that I've been playing on 3DS (although, I've been told this is an inferior way to play...)

Anyway, maybe a third option would be nice...

If you're not a fan of the GBA version you're probably not a fan of the game since it's pretty much an exact port.

Yoshi's Island is the worst Super Mario World game in existance. It's still a great game though, I love it

Forgainst? Sounds like a Fire Emblem character. Maybe a General.

Nah, its very much a Tomino era Gundam character name.

I have no experience with it, but considering how bipolar Nintendo fans are about innovation and change to their beloved series, I love Yoshi's Island.

I bet I'd like it, considering that I hold this game's unfortunate bastard sequel, Yoshi's Story, in a rose-tinted light and I'm pretty sure Yoshi's Story isn't a good game. Also, whenever Jeff gets crazy old man "I don't like this game because of really weird reasons" I tend to disagree. Remember, he's the guy who thought Super Metroid was disappointing because he finished it the day he bought it.
