Why? Because Brawl's cutscenes were uploaded online.

In his bi-weekly column in Weekly Famitsu, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai revealed some new details about the upcoming game. One major detail he covered was the exclusion of a story mode and CG cutscenes and his reasons behind it.

In the previous game, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the development team took advantage of the rare occasion of having multiple different series' characters all appear in the same game, so they painstakingly created a special story called the Subspace Emissary, complete with cutscenes for players to enjoy. It was a project that obviously took a lot of thought, time, and energy. And then, the obvious happened...

"Unfortunately, the movie scenes we worked hard to create were uploaded onto the internet." Sakurai lamented. "You can only truly wow a player the first time he sees [a cutscene]. I felt if players saw the cutscenes outside of the game, they would no longer serve as rewards for playing the game, so I've decided against having them."

This is unfortunate. The cutscenes during Subspace Emissary were kind of awesome.

Kinda weird that an article is being written about this now when this was said during E3 week.

And I think Polygon's misinterpreting his words. Sakurai doesn't mention anything about there being no story mode, he just says that the cutscenes will be available to everyone at the start of the game.

Sometimes I feel like Nintendo is completely oblivious to what the hell is going on in this era of gaming. That being said, the story mode and cutscenes are literally the thing about Smash Brothers that I care the least about. Knowing Nintendo though they're going to try to make this game as non-competitive friendly as possible.

I'm torn on this. The Subspace Emissary cutscenes were kind of fun to watch but also, I was kind of annoyed with it being just a silent movie the whole time. What the hell was going on? I wanna know!

But yeah, this kind of stinks that we won't have a story mode. Will they go back to the adventure mode from Melee? That wasn't really a story, it just had your favorite Nintendo characters going into different Nintendo worlds.

Bummer, I really liked the way the Subspace Emissary was set up. It was much more interesting than just popping into one of the Nintendo stages and having to fight the enemies and main characters from that game with no context. It's not what I play a smash bros game for though, so no big deal.

The guys at Nintendo must have some super high stakes betting game over who can say or do the stupidest thing of the year. It's not possible for them to be so legitimately crazy, right?

Booo! I watched my husband play through the last Smash Bros and I loved the cutscenes. There's nothing better than seeing Kirby cut a damn spaceship in half. t's really too bad that they would leave out a pretty important aspect of the game just because of youtube. I would think most people feel like winning the matches is the reward for playing, not the cutscene, but Nintendo seems dead set on alienating their fans at the moment, so who am I to try and stop their self-immolation.

I don't know about an actual story mode but yeah, we know there will be cutscenes. Full versions of the kind we saw with Mega Man and Villager's reveal.

Were do we know this from? All I can find is that they will most likely make more of those intro videos for the rest of the characters.

There will be a single player "campaign," that much is confirmed. How much story it has is not looking good based on what they've said.

I don't know what people in the Smash Bros. community think of the Brawl story mode (as an extremely casual fan, it was fun enough though it's obviously not the main appeal) but this is one of the dumbest reasons I have ever seen for a cutting a feature in a game and is another in a long line of Nintendo's "WHAT THE FUCK IS A INTERNET?! I DON'T KNOW!" hilarity.

Yeah, I mainly meant "single player campaign" as a story mode, but not as a Subspace Emissary kinda thing. I think it's been explicitly said that Subspace Emissary is pretty much dead.

I also meant cutscenes as those intro videos and not Subspace Emissary style cutscenes.

The single player in Melee was significantly better that the flaming piece of shit that was the Subspace Emissary. It had no cut scenes either. The first level is just you taking your character through a level of the Mushroom Kingdom. It was amazing to be shooting goomba's with your bow as Link.

Fuck, there was even a level where you were in a temple from Legend of Zelda and you could be Yoshi eating redeads. It was amazing.

Perhaps they are trying to turn it into a E-sport game? Bad move either way, alot of people, myself included prefer their fighting games with stories(KOF's has had me addicted since 98').

I will not be purchasing this game. It sounds more awful every time they talk about it.

No story means they SHOULD stock-pile on the characters. This could turn out to be a blessing..... I hope... I mean, this is like the game that could absolutely put into overdrive console sales..... Just for one game.

Hell. I bought a gamecube and Wii just for smash bros. I sold my wii after like a month but hey... they still got my money.

Screw the Subspace Emissary, I just want to see Bowser get knocked off the screen and your guy does their taunt and then a trophy of them falls with all the other trophies and you get to shoot the credits.

I think I liked it fine back in the day but will not miss it at all. Somehow I just didn't expect them to do it like they did last time.

Still, their quoted reasoning for why they're not doing it sounds hella dumb. A weak excuse at best.

Hey uhh.... where can I see the cutscenes? Apparently I missed them, and I didn't play Brawl long enough to bother with the story mode.

Or atleast remain on LSD 24/7.

To me Smash Bros is a multiplayer game, so this doesn't really bother me by itself. However between this and the comments about the reduced roster, and the simultaneous development, I'm pretty worried that they're rushing this game.
