Have you already turned down the difficulty? There's no shame in toning things down if you're stuck. I started the game on the lowest difficulty and still had a little trouble on the boss you're talking about though.

Maybe try using some of the traps around the village too. There's one building right across from the barn that has some spikes along the hallway entrance. I was able to knock chainsaw guy down at least. (If you're fast enough you could probably throw a match on him at that point.)

@thebrokenpinion: You should be able to collect 3 explosive crossbow rounds before getting to that boss and you should have plenty of trap parts so just make 1 more during the fight and you should be good, it's pretty hard to miss with those. He took 4 explosive shots and a couple of bullets on medium for me.

You're not gonna have much fun when the game decides to turn into an action game for a bit in chapter 5-6 (I think). :P

Man, all your threads are like a single sentence long, if that. Maybe you could, y'know, try to write something a little more substantial.

As for the topic at hand, naturally you should make sure to dispatch all of the lesser enemies in the area before you trigger the chainsaw guy. Then like @pinner458 said make yourself some explosive bolts and he'll go down like that. Make sure you locate the shotgun in the area, too. Hard to miss since it'll be in a silver case.

In a way, chainsaw dude is the hardest part of the game (just because you're so underpowered at that point, and not yet used to the combat). It's certainly not an easy game, but I found him harder than anything that came since.

It was so satisfying to fight him again on NG+ and wreck his shit using stealth kills.

@shagge: Not to mention that he's much faster than you'd expect, especially for anyone who's accustomed to the Chainsaw Majini from RE5. That guy also loves himself some cackling before he actually swings his chainsaw, whereas this guy swings it without hesitation. Like a certain other chainsaw wielding son of a bitch.

Also, it's funny to me how in that picture he looks fucking terrified. His eyes have the sort of expression that screams ''I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I'M DOING''.

This is what I did. Just spam them explosive bolts. Now, the NEXT few bosses can get tricky though they're more puzzles designed to suck your ammo out before you figure out the trick.

Ha! "Somebody take this thing away from me before I accidentally cut off a cop's head or something!"

Edit: Oh shit. I just realized: A "resident evil" would be defined as "an evil within". Fuuuuck.

@thebrokenpinion: Oh, that'll be the double-barrel shotgun, but you can also still collect the other one as well. Might be handy just in case since you can't actually upgrade the double-barrelled one.

Fuck...you can't? Not even damage or anything? Does it actually remain useful throughout the game then? I haven't used my code for all that extra gear. I was saving it for the second playthrough.

Same, that's what I've done -- save it for a second playthrough I mean. And I'm still not that far in yet (just finished chapter 4), but it does seem to be pretty powerful (certainly more so than the regular shotgun at base stats) and has a good chance of at the very least knocking an enemy over, even at medium range.

Also, I was surprised to find that the Fighting Chance DLC actually gives you two new crossbow ammo types -- fire and poison. They each require 5 parts to make but still... they seem like they could very possibly become game changers. Poison for example will actually draw enemies towards it because of its smell or something.

@thebrokenpinion: oh man I feel really sorry for you... If you think chapter 3 is difficult you're in for hell of a ride. Without giving anything away, I just want to say that this game is frustratingly difficult way too damn often.

I'm playing it on survival and finding it on par with games of my era (80s and 90s).

Sometimes it is unfair (if you think chapter 3's boss is "hard" you're going to go crazy on later bosses) and it seems like they haven't learned anything in the last decade but all in all I have not had so much trouble that I think the game is beyond redemption.

I still really enjoy it, but man it makes me so mad sometimes. I haven't been able to play it in longer stretches than a chapter a day only because of it, and I feel it should be for other reasons.

I've gotten to chapter 9 so far.

  • Get revolver crit to 50%. There is a base 10% chance to crit so 60% of the time you will instantly kill a regular zombie with a headshot.
  • Get flash bolt up to level 3, this will let you kill 3 zombies with one bolt, 5 if you get it to level 5. Super cheap to make more bolts (2 parts).
  • Upgrade harpoon to 5 if you really want to destroy everything with zero effort. It costs 50k goop for a reason.

The first 4 chapters are tough because you have access to barely anything. Also, the lockers you open up with keys are random, so save before you use a key. Keep reloading until you get what you want, which is usually the jar with 5000 goop.

I was skipping around chapters on casual after finishing it on survival and I noticed that other than it giving you a slight warning danger is about and a handful more bullets. Enemies still seem to take the same amount of ammo and I think you take a little less damage, but anything with a single hit kill like the chapter 3 boss is probably going to be a pain to fight regardless of the difficulty.

@yummylee: So is the fire crossbow bolt the same as the regular bolt once it's fully upgraded? Or does it engulf an area in flame?

I was kind of pissed having rented the game and seeing the weapons I missed out on in the model viewer. Most of the time it (pre-order dlc) doesnt bother me but with there being so little weapons in the game it's kind of a big deal. (well not really I just like to complain)

I was finding the game difficult until after chapter 3. I think once you (OP) overcome it you'll find the rest of the game easy by comparison.

@boozak: No idea, as I never upgraded the harpoon to max. I intentionally decided against min/maxing and specialising in any particular area and just spent my gel willy-nilly. The actual fire bolt seems to gush out fire in two directions from what I;ve seen, though I didn't actually use it... correctly. I shot it at the chainsaw guy and it was spraying outwards, rather than doing any damage unto towards him :P

And the double-barrelled shotgun is the only pre-order weapon. The burst handgun is Kidman's, so that'll likely be included in her DLC story. The military pistol is of course Oda's, so... no idea about that, same with that semi-auto sniper rifle. I would assume the sniper rifle will also be apart of the Kidman DLC, if it isn't an unlock from a higher difficulty. Though considering that you get a damned rocket launcher just for completing it on Survival, I wouldn't think so.

@boozak: The fire one shoots out a thing with 3 streams of fire. It can be used as a kind of trap, but it's also harmful to you... makes the first laura fight a joke.

The aiming so far has felt pretty sluggish and clunky, and has a lot of very claustrophobic environments which leads to me taking damage a lot. Haven't tried bumping up the sensitivity yet but I'll give that a go. The letterboxing and poor FPS (in some areas) certainly doesn't help make things easier. I am enjoying the game a good deal though, mainly for the amazing horror atmosphere and all the little attention to detail in the environment. The enemy design has been great so far too, and man, I can't think of another game in recent memory with anywhere near as good headshots. The head explosions in this game are just fantastic.

@fuzzy_dunlop: Upgrading your accuracy will make the aiming feel a little more... natural. I think it's most important to upgrade the Revolver's accuracy some in particular, as at the start it is indeed kind of hard to shoot with.

@yummylee: Ah okay, It does sound different then, the regular bolt wouldnt even generate fire against mini bosses.

I only upgraded it to max because the crossbow itself was so cheap to upgrade and I figured one of the earlier bosses would be a more frequent thing. It did kind of trivialise some of the encounters though.

I do hope there's some kind of "Gold" version of this game because I did really enjoy it. And even though I found Kidman's voice acting atrocious I would like to see her character fleshed out a bit more.
