Now that you're properly titillated, I'd like to show you my joystick. And by joystick I mean penis. And by penis I mean PS3 peripheral by which I control my characters whilst fighting streets. You know, this one:

Not an actual penis

This is my limited-edition Femme Fatale Fightstick from Madcatz, number 73/350 made. There's isn't much that makes her special, but I swapped out the stick when the old one went bad and of course traded my square-gate in for an 8-way gate because I'm not a maniac, so in those little ways she's unique to me. I've spent more time with her on my lap than pretty much anything, but never went in for any fancier mods because A) money B) what if I break her and C) money.

But the week of E3 Arcade Shock announced a set of Street Fighter chibi pushbuttons and something inside me (my common sense) snapped and I knew I had to buy a set. I had no idea how much they were going to cost, I just knew that I needed them. At first I thought about buying a complete set of Rose because, well, it's Rose, but decided that would be a bit redundant and besides, I'm nowhere near good enough to consider myself a character specialist, so I immediately set to wracking my brain for which characters I wanted to buy.

I decided that I would buy 8 different characters that I play with some degree of competency, then assign each of them to buttons that I felt really exemplified that character. I came up with something like this:

It worked out pretty well (although I don't actually play Ryu) and fit within the limited set of characters they had available, but I couldn't figure out who would be KKK. Maybe Claw?

It didn't matter though because Arcade Shock started announcing more characters. Then they announced ball-tops. Then they announced more characters. Then they announced prices (ouch!). Then it hit me. Looking through the cast there were exactly 8 female characters available (sorry Poison, Elena & Decapre) and duh, I had a femme fatale stick. And of course once that was decided, the ball-top had to be Dan. Who else in the cast is a better fit for creepily hanging around a bunch of girls?

With this in mind I decided on a new layout based on my extremely limited character knowledge for most of the characters I was going to buy:

  • Jab = Makoto (she has that one command normal? I don't know...)
  • Strong = Rose
  • Fierce = Sakura (cl.Fierce, cr.Fierce, j.Fierce, even with the nerfs)
  • PPP = Ibuki (her target combo got buffed to not whiff as often)
  • Short = Chun (Short, Short xx EX Hyakuretsukyaku, Ultra)
  • Forward = C.Viper (because LOLOL she has footsies now so fair)
  • Roundhouse = Cammy
  • KKK = Juri (sometimes her punches are kicks!)

July 1st rolled around and I "happened" to be awake around 3AM and just "happened" to be refreshing arcadeshock.com when online preorders became available so I fought my way through the phone interface, got all eight buttons and one ball-top in my cart, and checked out. The next morning I told my Beyoncé that I had done a bad thing and had spent (exorbitant sum of money) on cosmetic upgrades for a video game interface device and she thought it was cute because she rocks my face off.

So on Saturday I got my package, tore it open, hastily watched a tutorial on button replacement on youtube, skipped most/all of the important parts, then opened up my stick and got to swapping. Outside of a minor mishap involving me not remembering which wires went into which buttons nor the fact that I had unbound L1 and L2 in the options, things went off without a hitch and she plays as crisp as ever.

Now I'm fully ready to get hype over Evo weekend, and if you run into a Rose player on PSN named catbond just know that while I may be ass at Ultra, I have a sweet stick! See you in the chat!

Kawaii!

How much did this cost in total? Pad+Stick+Gate+Buttons+Balltop?

#3 Posted by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@corruptedevil: Something like:

  • Fightstick ~ $200
  • Gate ~ $25
  • Replacement stick ~ $25
  • Buttons + Balltop = $130

So all-told it's probably something like $400 o_O

Nothing good happens after 2 am.

Except for this, this is good.

That is a re-dunk-u-lous amount of money to spend on a fight stick, but if you have the funds and the means to do it I guess why not.

Wow... What if I told you that I might have the exact same fucking buttons on my desk??? That is weird!

I'll have to put them in a different order...

#7 Posted by DannyHibiki (205 posts) -

Well, gotta go buy some Dan buttons now. See ya'll later.

Well, it was over like 5-years so that's only $80 a year...?

#9 Posted by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@viciousbearmauling: Well, it probably helps that there are exactly 8 girl buttons and Arcade Shock said that the girl buttons were selling the fastest which isn't a surprise.

Also Rose should always be Strong. Always.

That is a kick ass stick. I have stick envy. Stupid boring TE stick...

Hmmm the composition on C Viper is odd, like a weird MC Escher style girl. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the buttons. Cool beans, I might want to order that ;)

@starvinggamer: I thought about Makoto being Strong because of how godlike that button is, and having Rose on Forward because of slide and close forward being great.

#15 Posted by FLStyle (4768 posts) -

I highly approve! Money well spent.

Yeah, Forward actually might make more sense in a SFIV context.

#17 Posted by Flappy (2302 posts) -

As a Makoto lover, we would all be better off with her on our fightsticks. Viper is a decent substitute.

#18 Posted by ESREVER (2701 posts) -

I had a recent stick modification too when ArcadeShock made the BBCP buttons/balltops available.

I also got the I-No and Ramlethal buttons, but I haven't added them yet.

I love it. I play even worse than normal with a stick, but I would still do this if I had the cash and opportunity. You have chosen... Wisely.

Holy shit. I spent just over $100 on my stick and even then I felt it was pricey. That said if they ever released some Marvel buttons I probably wouldn't be able to resist.

Anyway your stick looks really damn great.

Seriously, why the fuck aren't octo gates the standard?

And the winner of EVO uses a PSX controller....

And here I thought this thread was going to be about Poison.

Nice looking stick nevertheless.

I am insanely jealous.

#26 Edited by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@darthorange: Because Japan? I have no idea.

And the winner of EVO uses a PSX controller....

I just don't have the proper dexterity in my fingers to pull the triggers with that sort of precision, and certain button combinations become really hard to do with consistency like X+Triangle or Square+Circle. My dream controller would be a PS d-pad with arcade-stick buttons that was somehow stable, but in all honesty for 2D fighting games the Hitbox is the one-true input device.

Sexy stick!

Out off all my sticks, I have yet to try and do some mods to them. I'm always scared I'll screw something up.

#28 Posted by Marino (4736 posts) -

@starvinggamer: A friend of mine bought one of the Femme Fatale sticks at PAX several years ago. Then he took it over to the Udon booth and had Long Vo draw Dan on it over in the white space on the left. It's great.

Also, your "stick" is on the front page of this here web site now.

Are you guys using these controllers with anything other than fighting games?

My regular Dualshocks/360 controller sure looks boring compared to this.

#31 Posted by MannyMAR (492 posts) -

I just have my old hori arcade stick.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001GDQRZM?pc_redir=1405230831&robot_redir=1

Paid $100 less than that price, replaced the gate and buttons with Sanwa parts which came out to about $30. I was gonna add a graphic but then I was like eff it. So paid $130 for stick that's worth $200-230, I say I made out like a bandit in the end.

#32 Posted by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@guanophobic: Nah, no games outside of fighting games are designed with a joystick in mind. When's the last time you remember playing a game that didn't use either analog stick in any way?

Well there's always beat em ups and other arcade style games. You could probably play Shovel Knight with it.

If you have a fight stick that works with the PC then they are great for MAME and other exploits in emulation

@starvinggamer: After reading your post and sitting on it over the weekend and with a little bit of time watching evo I took the plunge and bought one of those Chibi SF balltops! Unfortunately they were out on Chun-Li and Sakura so I had to make due with Dan.

It's very difficult to screw up on modding the sticks. Most of the sticks that have come out since 2008 are made with swapping out parts in mind. I think the only real issue with some of the sticks I've seen is some companies have used some sort of adhesive to hold some of the female and male part pins just in case they may slip out. It's really unnecessary and is annoying to remove some times.

#37 Posted by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@i_stay_puft: There is no such thing as "making due" when it comes to Dan!

#38 Posted by DefaultProphet (540 posts) -

So I recently got a fight stick from work. It's one of these http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Universal-Arcade-Stick-Tournament-Xbox/dp/B0001XFLV4 but somebody swapped out the buttons for Happ buttons and they feel real nice. Problem is I can't get it working on PC. Further I can't tell if that's because the drivers are weird or because the fightstick itself is busted in some way. Is there a good way to test if the fightstick is broken?

#39 Posted by I_Stay_Puft (3577 posts) -

@starvinggamer: But when it says chibi I expect chibi faces. Dan Hibiki just looks like Dan Hibiki!

I have the Tatsunoko vs Capcom Arcade stick, all I've done to it in the years i've had it was get a new gate (worth it). Seeing this makes me wonder if there are anymore mods for it?

Anyway when Guilty Gear Xrd is released I hope they pull out all the stops with their Arcade Stick :)

I think changing from a square gate to an 8-way makes you a maniac. SQUARE FOR LIFE!

#45 Posted by StarvingGamer (8380 posts) -

@killroycantkill: I'll say this: a square gate is great for mashing out shortcut DP motions. But I can never hit the cardinals with enough accuracy on a square.

#46 Edited by syz (252 posts) -

Hoping to find enough money for one of the Persona PS3/PS4 TEs.

Glad they're doing a dual-mod thing so I don't need to buy a PS4 stick just for Xrd.

#47 Posted by Damodar (1428 posts) -

Square gate is where it's at.

#48 Posted by TruthTellah (9323 posts) -

All you really need is a PS1 controller, but this is still super awesome.

#49 Edited by Ninja_Welshman (494 posts) -

I built this stick from scratch. I still suck at fighting games.

#50 Edited by Damodar (1428 posts) -

@ninja_welshman: Nice work, super clean. I have to appreciate the care that went in to making the internals look nice, from the sleeves on the wiring to painting the stick mounting plate. Did you make the housing yourself?
