I want to understand this! (X3: Terran Conflict)

I have owned this game for over a year and never really dug deep enough to actually understand it. Recently I was inspired by Dave's quest to understand EVE and decided I should finally dive down into X3. I keep pounding my head but don't really know where to start. Any pointers?
