That's definitely an advertisement!

Seems a lot like Sony's ads. The whole "gesturing characters because our product involves gesture interactivity" is--and I mean this cynically--slick marketing.

I feel like this is the first time I've seen Xbox One marketing material that directly involved games. All their other ads seem brought to you by the colors green and white, like their billboards and promotional videos. And I guess they dropped that "Input One" slogan pretty fast.

I'm not trying to bash the console, it's just that Microsoft's marketing for the past year has been fascinating and weird.

I thought it was a pretty good hype-me up ad (and I can't wait until Titanfall is released). The only thing that looked uber-weird and unnatural was the hand gesture part with the woman sitting on the couch. Is anyone actually going to use that feature as their main means of exploring menus? I guess it is somewhat useful if you are too lazy to pick up the controller, but it really just comes across as a novelity.

#7 Posted by Istealdreams (148 posts) -

I think it is a really good looking ad, but I cant help to feel that it is VERY similar to the PS4 ad with the two guys being part of the game as well. Either way though, entertaining ad.

That womans accent was pretty sexy, anyway, I like the advert. not as much as the Forza 5 one with the camera on the McLaren roof.

"HAI, WE ARE SKYPING!"

"FUCK YOU, I'M WATCHING SPORTS!! GET OFF O' MY TV!!!"

"XBOX, TURN OFF SKYPE!"

Reminds me of the idea of the Xbox 360 commercials. I like it though.

#12 Posted by Deranged (1837 posts) -

That was an awesome trailer and a marked improvement of their previous attempts. Really focuses on what should matter for those looking for a next-gen console; the gamer. It is invigorating and really emphasizes "inviting" the player in. Loved the look of it! Sony has been killing it with their trailers and it's nice to see Microsoft catching up!

Can't wait to pick up my XONE next month and my PS4 next year! :D

Meet the new Box. Same as the old Box.

#16 Posted by TopCat88 (174 posts) -

@budwyzer: Exactly my reaction. When I'm watching football, I'm doing nothing else. Including speaking to other people who may be in the room. Hopefully you can have Skype active for when you want to call someone while at the same time firmly blocking incoming calls. That goes for when I'm playing games or watching a movie/TV as well. If I'm doing something, I'm doing it properly.

You know, I like the Sony ones, and this one seemed pretty cool too. So did the Dead Rising one.

#19 Posted by BillyMaysRIP (161 posts) -

@istealdreams: It takes time to make any sort of video, especially one with special effects, so I doubt it was intentional. It's a pretty common trend to incorporate people into the "game." I feel like Xbox started it with their amazing Standoff Trailer, but then Sony and COD took it to a whole new level with their trailers - Micheal and Surprise. It's just a thing that companies like to do.

I liked this trailer better than the "Perfect Day" trailer mostly because the song seemed out of place for the violent nature of everything. Also who plays Killzone like that? But hey, to each their own.

only like a couple of weeks.

Seems like a solid ad. The gaming to everything else ratio was decent.

Arthur Gies is complaining on twitter that the woman was only watching a movie.

#23 Edited by TheSouthernDandy (3759 posts) -

Pretty cool. Also more commercials with The Hives please. I like that Dead Rising ad too.

#24 Posted by Icemo (640 posts) -

I liked that ad, but when they started using voice commands it kinda felt too weird. Talking to your console just seems so ridiculous. If it had an AI in it that would respond back to you then it would make sense to talk to your console, but that would also be weird at the same time...

I don't know who that is, but it's a silly complaint. The younger guy was only watching soccer, so they did a good job showing games, Kinect, TV/sports, and movies in less than two minutes. The Sony one was okay, but I could've done without the singing.

#29 Edited by Chronox (38 posts) -

@deathstriker: He's a Polygon Editor, I don't think his point is that valid. She is watching Star Trek after all.

#30 Edited by Deranged (1837 posts) -

I'm trying to understand what he's complaining about :/ It's someone watching a movie... on Netflix. Why is that a reason to complain?

#31 Edited by bigjeffrey (4702 posts) -

oh gies

#32 Posted by Chronox (38 posts) -

@deranged: He seems to have issue that yes a woman is in a console advert but just watching a movie not playing a game.

#33 Posted by Icemo (640 posts) -

@deranged: Arthur Gies is saying that only males were playing games and the only female using xbox one wasn't playing a game. So he thinks that Microsoft doesn't still view women as gamers, or something like that. Which is a stupid conclusion since I don't think the people making that ad even thought about what gender should be playing and what not.

So he's targeting an ad for "improperly" classifying how a woman may use an Xbox? Well that's a new one.

To that I agree (your point). Seems like he's trying to find something to pick apart.

@icemo: You think he would be more upset that there are only white Europeans with no black/ asian / middle eastern or whatever's represented.

You might not, but the Xbox One is not intended only for gamers. It's intent is a convergence device, and there are a lot of people out there who are, for whatever reason, confused and intimidated by remotes or controllers. For example, my girlfriend (edit: parents as well) cannot grasp the concept of switching inputs on the TV, even though it is a single button press that is in the same place every time. So even though it is not a problem for you, it is still a problem for a percentage of the population. Motion controls and voice commands are an attempt at solving that problem by making the experience as fluid, natural, and easy as possible. How successful the alternative inputs of the Xbox One are has yet to be seen, but if it works properly, this could be important.

On another note, we had an ad that ONLY talked about NFL Football. Couldn't we have had an ad that ONLY talked about games? I can watch Star Trek right now, and I'm not going to pay 500 dollars to start it with a voice command.

The start of the ad was pretty darn good, though it quickly turned into something closer to the PS4 perfect day ad, which I didn't really like either.

And that is exactly why I detest that man. All he ever does is attempt to cause controversy with awful bullshit like this. If he's going to pull the advert apart for only including one woman watching a film, why doesn't he moan there's only white people in the advert, or the fact that the English guy is surprise surprise is watching football, or the Italian guy is obviously going to play Ryse?

tl;dr Arthur Gies is a cunt.

I actually thought he had a point criticizing the ad, but then someone posted the part where he defended online only Xbox. Nope! You lost me!
