First of all I wanna start this thread by saying that this is not a hate thread. If you've been anywhere on the internet within the past month, I'm sure you can tell that Microsoft and their new gaming console, the Xbox One, have generally been poorly received. I wouldn't contribute much to society if I made a thread hating on it. In fact, I would hope my two cents helps them out, since I think they need a pep talk or a couple words of advice.
I guess the main problem I have with the whole ordeal is that Microsoft can't quite seem to figure how to market themselves. For example, the original announcement of the console was broadcast on TV at 9 AM pacific time. During this announcement, Microsoft focused on pretty much everything not about gaming. That's fine, but who do you think is going to watch the announcement? Gamers are. Who is going to read the articles people write about said announcement? Mostly gamers. You're talking to gamers about all the things an alleged game console does except the main reason why anyone would tune in. Trying to reach an audience that doesn't care about games is almost futile on TV. I can assure you, many of them did not know about it, were probably working, or just don't care enough about a new console to tune in and watch.
Another thing it gets bashed for is the DRM and always online aspects. This however doesn't bother me. On the flipside I can absolutely understand the massive amounts of butthurt and rage that emerged from it. I'm into gaming and technology. I don't mind my games being digital. I haven't bought a used game since high school. I don't like lending games. As an avid Steam user, there isn't much of a difference to me. Microsoft doesn't seem to get the idea of the general public. If you've worked any job in your life that required dealing with people on a regular basis, you know what I mean about the general public. They don't grasp many concepts.
Been to gamestop? How many ghetto ass people do you see from the city buying a bunch of random used games for their kids. It's like a free for all in there. How is the general public supposed to understand that they have to always be online with an account? How are they supposed to understand that they can't trade games? How are they supposed to understand that they (potentially) will have to make all purchases digitally through credit cards and what not? I feel like you almost alienate an entire younger audience by doing this. It's kind of the point behind a console no? I mean there's a certain expectation with a PC that isn't shared with consoles.
The TV stuff also seems like something that the general public won't care about. It's definitely a pretty cool side feature. I'd use it. Problem is that I can guarantee that a lot of people won't, or won't know how or even that it's there. The kinect.. well I just can't.
In the end I think it's gonna be a cool product. I just don't think that it's consumer friendly at all. Microsoft has a bit of an arrogant attitude that I feel they need to clean up as well. It's more of a PR nightmare than a bad product.
P.S. I apologize if this is TL;DR. I just had a lot to say is all :D
