I played the hell out of Forza 2 & 3 when they came out and really played the hell out of Gran Turismo 5, being the last racing game I played. Then Forza 4 came out and I wondered about its worth. I think 3 racing games of the same console generation is too much and borders on EA sports titles for pointlessness (for me), with a few new xars and tracks. Then I saw it on sale at 25% of its launch price and decided to give it a run (I haven't actually played it yet).

Which leads to my question - is it worth owning Kinect for it? Obviously you have to have both to answer my question.

I have absolutely no interest in Kinect and any game that has come out for it. I certainly won't upgrade my old 360 for the slim to buy it is part of a package and the local price of $200 for Kinect alone makes my penis go "meh". Even the used price of $75 I see, even with a Viagra tablet can't get any blood flow in me. But what about Forza 4?

Forza 4 is a hell of a game. The Kinect stuff is pretty pointless though. Don't worry about it. You should buy a racing wheel instead!

If you have been paying attention to any of the kinect game coverage on the site I think you would know that the device only seems to actually function as intended for dance games and happy action theatre. That's it. There is no way that you would get enough precision out of that thing to play a Forza game. You would have way more fun with an actual racing wheel, which is what I suggest you get. I don't actually own a kinect so if anyone has had some form of a positive experience with this game (which I doubt) feel free to say I'm wrong. I'll concede that you are correct. But really, kinect was released as an unfinished product that is not capable of doing what it was ment to. Maybe the next gen will be better.

The head tracking is poor and locked to a flat horizontal axis, Autovista works better with a controller (ignoring that it's the weakest mode in Forza 4), and there's no reason to toy around with the "hands are steering wheel" driving for more than a few minutes.

As much as I would like to, it is a pretty expensive option, especially if I got a 360 and PS3 one.

I wasn't really anticipating a sudden epiphany and great desire to get Kinect and this only seals the deal for me. If I got enough truly wonderful feedback on great it was, I could have been swayed. I don't want for a single second to play racing games (Mario Kart) with my hands in the air as it is. When I saw E3 last year and the Forza 4 bit, I did think at the time how damn stupid it looked, but sometimes we get it wrong. I am quite prepared to defer to your wise words.

I did play the game for the first time since I posted this. I did kind of feel like I was playing Forza 3. As stupid as this sounds (for me), I actually thought for a second I had bought Forza 3 again by mistake and went to the case to check. The first races was with a Citreon C1 (my preferred car of the lot) and the tracks are just the same all over again. Familiarity may be breeding contempt. I didn't get excited by the car choices overall, but at least it hastn't got 6487 different versions of a Mazda MX5 like GT5. I am still sure I will play the hell out of it, but the freshness has definitely gone.

@Contrarian: Just go drive about 100 laps at Infineon Raceway. It's new for Forza 4 and it's pretty much the best track in the world, so you should savor it.

At least I have something new to look forward to then. Those "original" tracks in Gran Turismo 5 were pretty damn ordinary ....... made me want to avoid them.

No need to be worried. I was just surprised when you mentioned you would buy a third 3DS, and when i saw your pic, i remembered that. I mean, who could forget Captain Rainbow? I used the Kinect with a racing wheel in Forza 4 for a long time, and although it's kinda nice to lean into your turns with, it is not at all worth the cost of a Kinect.

It's kinda hard to get used to at first as well.

That is the closest comment I have seen to supporting it I have seen. Did you use a real racing wheel, those groounded ones, with head tracking, or that Wii-like one I once saw in a shop? Either way, I am still not sold on Kinect as there is nothing else that makes it worth it. I see a lot specials with 3-5 games free with it and they are the same games I so studiously avoided on the Wii.

I used the official Microsoft wheel, not the wii-style one. Which I had to use on my lap since I don't have a racing chair to mount it to, then I just propped the the pedals against my coffee table.

It worked, that's for sure. That's a lot better than I can say about a bunch of kinect games. But that's also because they give you a lot of options to tune it.

I got the Kinect at launch cause it seemed cool, then I didn't really do much outside of Dance Central. I accepted my loss and at least resolved to enjoy it with Forza. But not worth the money. Maybe if you can find a used one on the cheap, then I would say go for it, if you play a lot of Forza 4.
