So with the release of the best racing game ever looming, I decided I wanted to make a Forza playlist. I haven't really listened to music while playing games since the early days of the Xbox 360. I rather enjoyed having music when playing PGR3. Another main reason for me to do this is because we're going to have an assload of people showing up for Race Night initially, with a 16 player lobby now. It's going to be loud, suffice it to say, so having music will entertain me when I turn my mic volume down, and may also keep me from adding to the chatter.

Here's what I've got so far...

  • Rush - Red Barchetta (only the best driving song ever)
  • AC/DC - Highway to Hell
  • The Cars - Drive (In Stereo)
  • Foghat - Slow Ride
  • Golden Earring - Radar Love
  • Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
  • Tom Petty - Runnin' Down a Dream
  • Prince - Little Red Corvette
  • Tom Cochrane - Life is a Highway
  • Sammy Hagar - I Can't Drive 55
  • Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
  • The Smashing Pumpkins - 1979
  • Molly Hatchet - Flirtin With Disaster
  • Pink Floyd - Have a Cigar
  • Duran Duran - Rio (maybe more of a personal pick than an actual driving song)
  • Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
  • Genesis - Turn it on Again
  • Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear (the Reaper)
  • Blur - Song 2
  • Coldplay - Clocks
  • ELO - Mr Blue Sky
  • Van Halen - Panama
  • Paul Oakenfold - Ready Steady Go
  • TONIGHT, on Top Gear... The Allman Brothers Band - Jessica

There are some obvious songs that I've chosen not to have (like Highway Star), simply because I don't like them that much. I'll also be adding a bunch of personal favorites (mostly Rush) to my playlist.

Almost everything from Queens of the Stone Age.

This. Also Mark Lanegan's Bubblegum album has fucking loads of great Driving songs on it.

Also somewhat predictably the Drive soundtrack is great for driving to.

Son of a... See, this is why I made this thread! Hmm, I think I'll go with Runaway, and maybe Livin' on a Prayer and/or Have a Nice Day. Half of Wanted Dead or Alive is too slow to be a good driving song (in my opinion anyway).

Going through their stuff on youtube. They're... not exactly doing it for me.

@EuanDewar: Is that song supposed to sound like it's be playing through a busted car stereo system?

#9 Posted by EuanDewar (4020 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

@ShaggyChu: Yes, actually.

If you've watched that music video with Bruce Willis in it a hundred times like I have, The Gorillaz 'Stylo' is pretty good:

#11 Posted by Falconer (1561 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

@Ketchupp: No one playlist should have that Power. (totally added)

@TooWalrus: Hmm, interesting. I may have to add it. Also, dat El Camino.

A lot of the driving I do is on the rolling highways in the northeast with the crazy Massachusetts drivers and the oblivious New Hampshire drivers. The combination of the two can make for a rather stressful drive. So for me there's nothing like some nice soothing progressive tunes to make the miles go by.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jshF3g5CLn0 This is a lot of fun to drive to. Brings up mental images of tearing through corners like an old cop TV show.

#14 Edited by Falconer (1561 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

@Metl: Damn, that's one good jam. I really like smooth electronic stuff, not that crazy fast beat stuff like most people. That song will definitely be added, thanks.

Also, as someone who's family is from Massachusetts and have visited it often, I totally know what you mean. Dat Mass Pike. My mom still drives like a mad person...

@Poppduder: That's way awesome, thanks!

Wait, are you looking for awesome songs about driving or for awesome songs to drive to?

I think this might be a bit too slow and not what you are looking for, but it's sitll an awesome song from an awesome movie :P

#16 Posted by Falconer (1561 posts) - 1 year, 7 months ago

@Mexican_Brownie: Songs to drive to, they don't necessarily have to be about driving. I'd be into that song if it weren't for the creepy robot voice.

@ShaggyChu: No problemo, I'm a huge trance fan. I've actually got a blog where I post a new favorite song about once a week if you'd like to poke through it. Just in case if you want another I dug this one out of the blog from a few weeks ago. Craving does a lot of great stuff similar to the song I posted earlier. Here's the link to the blog btw: http://metlscifi.wordpress.com/

Lately Rise Against's "Wait For Me" really gets my gears going. Especially when I have those close wheel to wheel races coming down to the last few turns.

Black Keys - I Got Mine

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

ZZ Top - La Grange (among a billion other of their songs)

Iggy Pop - The Passenger

Mark Ronson, Ghostface, & Nate Dogg - Ooh Wee

Everlast - Hot to Death

Nine Inch Nails - Closer/Only

Fatboy Slim - Rockafeller Skank

Oakenfold - Switch On

White Stripes - Icky Thump

NWA - Automobile

I'll add more later as I update my own.

I'd check out a bunch of stuff by The White Stripes and the Foo Fighters. Two of my favorite bands, and great music to race to imo

Also, look into the following:

The James Gang - Funk #49

The Presidents of the United States of America - Peaches

The Presidents of the United States of America - Lump

Came across a song I had favorited on pandora while doing homework just now.

Raining Blood - Slayer.

EDIT: In fact any Slayer album will do.

OK, I've got a few more for you, Shaggy. A lot of these were ideas I had from movies and games that centered around cars in some way or another. Here's the list:

  • Cake - The Distance
  • Chuck Berry - Johnny B. Goode (and of course, along similar lines...)
  • Huey Lewis and the News - Power of Love (cannot WAIT to rock my updated murdered-out Delorean to this one and get smoked)
  • Ice Cube - It Was A Good Day
  • The Cardigans - My Favorite Game
  • Does It Offend You, Yeah? - We Are Rockstars
  • Tenacious D - Tribute/Wonder Boy
  • Manny Fresh - Real Big
  • White Zombie - More Human Than Human
  • The Faint and Oakenfold - Glass Danse
  • Deadmau5 - Moar Ghosts and Stuff (not sure on the song's spelling)
  • Beck - Timebomb
  • Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
  • Dr. Dre - Still D.R.E./Next Episode
  • Dropkick Murphys - Shippin Up to Boston
  • Gone Jackals - Legacy

This is my favorite driving song. I don't know why, I just get super fucking hyped when the drums kick in and I press that pedal just a little harder. Also, Josh's guitar sounds like an engine revving up. This entire record owns.

Lots of artists off of Ed Banger records. All fun to drive to. Weird French electronic dance music. Like the Drive soundtrack but with a beat.

Always - Erasure :)

EDIT: It was a joke

@ShaggyChu: How about Just Drive?

BBC's presentation probably made the song look better than it is but damn, I can't listen to it anymore without thinking about all the great racing last year.
