I just finished this game and I'd have to agree with the staff on it. It is down right bonkers. Any of you duders play it after you heard about it from the GOTY stuff?

GO PLAY IT: http://twinbeardstudios.com/frog-fractions

you should link it in the OP so everyone can experience the magic

also, that goddamn monologue

Can you explain what the appeal is? Everybody seems to be obnoxiously cryptic about what makes it so great.

EDIT: I guess I should explain that I've yet to actually listen to the GOTY podcast, and have only followed Brad's list and the guest lists.

What kind of time investment are we talking about before I start to understand? I'm kind of wrapped up in Guardians of Middle-earth right now.

I hate to be that guy, but I don't get it. I just finished it and it was a fun little thing with some decent humor but I didn't see anything special about it.

yepppppp (specifically I did that without help but couldn't figure out the purple goop)

#12 Posted by Phatmac (5726 posts) -

I don't think it's one of the best games if the year. However, I had a great time with it. People should check it out for sure.

#13 Posted by HistoryInRust (6321 posts) -

It suddenly became a bullet-hell game before I experienced half of what they described in the Bombcast, so I s'pose it didn't blow me away they way it probably should've.

#14 Posted by golguin (3940 posts) -

I did and it was a pretty novel idea. I got all the way to the text adventure part and stopped.

Yeah I kept typing turn on spigot and it was all "YO THIS IS A SPACE MACHINE YOU JUST DON'T TURN IT ON!"

#16 Posted by tracerace11 (289 posts) -

I played this today. I do not want to play video games anymore. I feel as I have seen all the secrets possessed by this universe.

#17 Posted by OmegaPirate (5522 posts) -

I heard about it from the idle thumbs podcast a little while ago - its a wonderful little game though and the more people play it the better, it just keeps spiralling into crazy :D

#18 Posted by Turambar (6790 posts) -

I played it, got up to the text adventure. Yes, the game is pretty good due to just how bizarre it is. That said, I still don't see how it can make its way onto GOTY lists. It's appeal lies in the randomness you experience on your first play through. But unless the parts I have yet to get up to have any actual quality to them aside from weirdness that hinges on non-sequitrs, then the only reason it's receiving such attention is just due to recency bias.

#19 Posted by FoolishChaos (438 posts) -

Played through it today. It was pretty cool and I can definitely see why the giantbomb staff would put it on a list.

Me too, I didn't even figure out that you could move up and down with the dragon. Once I found out I paused the podcast and went andf played it again.

It's way better when you're not just uninstalling and reinstalling the lock-on endlessly.

Yes! That's also where I got stuck. Ended up spending an hour on it (the whole experience, not just that part), all in all. I think I made the right choice to pause to GOTY podcast, go play it, and then come back. What a wacky little game. I think the boxing monologue is still the craziest fucking part, when all is said and done, which is saying a lot. Everything else kind of makes sense in context, I think? But that voiceover while you are swimming through the water is just SOOOOOOO far out of left field.

I got stuck in the uninstall/reinstall loop initially up until the point where the text in the upgrade says something along the lines of "how long do you think the frog will put up with the status quo?", and then I started thinking outside the box. I'm kinda curious about how far the upgrade menu goes, I'm sure the flavor text in there is only more ridiculous.

#24 Edited by FesteringNeon (2164 posts) -

I broke the game, as it froze up on me :D I didn't initially get the hook, but gave it a bit and started to like it more. It's pretty tough to play well on a laptop trackpad though.

EDIT: Ok it unfroze, and I got to finish it. Love the randomness.

My favorite bit was when you realized the bug porn game didn't fucking matter and you could just print all the goddamn money you wanted to win. HAHAHA.

Haha, that's delightful. Thanks! I'm actually surprised that the game doesn't get explicit about what to do at any point.

#28 Posted by MFJubes (18 posts) -

I had to cheat on the text adventure, but other than that, yeah, that was a neato surprise of a flash game. The scene with the dragon silhouette swimming as some guy monologue'd about boxing rivals any other legitimate gaming moment I had this year.

#29 Posted by Demoskinos (14871 posts) -

@beard_of_zeus: The Fun part is I posted this on Facebook and everyone has just been like You're crazy this game is a waste of time! And I just laugh on the inside that they will never know the truth.

#30 Posted by vikingdeath1 (973 posts) -

It was Reeeaaallll weird! In the best way!

I had to look up help on that pink goo though.

#31 Posted by yyninja (59 posts) -

This game is what Family Guy did to cartoons.

#32 Posted by handlas (2684 posts) -

Got to the text adventure part. I didn't know what to do with the bare wire that will start a fire so I can't go to sleep and return to Bug Mars or whatever.

#33 Posted by natetodamax (19208 posts) -

I plan on checking it out.

#34 Posted by FluxWaveZ (19350 posts) -

I did. Surprised how seemingly well I preformed at the text adventure part compared to other people given the fact that I had never played a game like it before.

Take the "note" that is taped on the platform. This leaves a piece of black electrical tape you can use to fix the wires. Also take the can from the hole put it under the spigot then pull the lever to fill the can with the pink goo take said goo to sleeping chamber and dump that shit in there. Then go to sleep and return to bug mars.
#36 Posted by FancySoapsMan (5833 posts) -

I played it because of IGN

#37 Posted by smcn (926 posts) -

I've never played more than 5 minutes of a text adventure in my life and didn't have to cheat on that part. I must be the emperor of video games.

#38 Posted by Joker369 (879 posts) -

Just finished it. The text adventure was a bit of a drag but that game is stupid crazy.

#39 Posted by Flappy (2272 posts) -

I finished the game, but damn...Fuck text adventures.

#41 Posted by CornBREDX (5347 posts) -

Several friends of mine and I played it at work today. Funny game. Glad I know it exists. There is one part I have a complaint about but I don't want to spoil anything.
It's worth seeing through to the end though.

#42 Posted by Meepasaurus (217 posts) -

I actually liked the text adventure part. :( Really super weird game. I'm not sure I'd put it on a GOTY list, but I'm glad I got to play it.

Does anyone know what happens if you catch the falling wrapped gift box? I missed every single one and didn't want to replay it.

#43 Posted by Novis (115 posts) -

It was an absurd game, and interesting to play, but awesome moment... eh.

#44 Posted by TruthTellah (9150 posts) -

This game made no sense.

And yet, somehow, it feels like it made more sense than any game I've played in a long time.

I figured it was just a riff on visual novels, but it's probably closer to phoenix wright

#47 Posted by ShiftyMagician (2129 posts) -

Played it. Beaten it without help. Good fun but I can't see how it's strong enough to get into some people's GoTY lists personally. Just my absolutely subjective opinion on it though and people should give it a go.

#48 Edited by mellotronrules (1193 posts) -

i don't know how something so insane kept such a low profile. i thought i'd seen everything...and then WHOOPS ddr dance off.

these dudes should do a kickstarter for a steam sequel. i'd throw him $10-15 bones, no question.

#49 Posted by ImmortalSaiyan (4683 posts) -

It sounds neat but I feel knowing the twist of it I won't enjoy it so much.

#50 Posted by joshth (505 posts) -

I'm so glad they mentioned it. I never would have found out much about it otherwise.
