I'm kind of a noob at it though, even on Easy I have yet to finish it.

Coop would have been cool, different players managing different parts of a much larger multi-floor capital ship

#2 Posted by Pie (6937 posts) -

Yeah it's pretty damn awesome and pretty damn hard. I do feel like I'm getting better at it on subsequent playthroughs though. Finishing this on normal will be an achievement

Yup, this game is going to be my new time sink, last one was Binding Of Isaac. I love the recent surge of game introducing roguelike mechanics into their gameplay.

I've started to switch off the med-bay and oxygen (on intervals) to get more power output.

#5 Posted by Pie (6937 posts) -

@Funkydupe: Switching off your oxygen in order to power other aspects of your ship is pretty hardcore.

#6 Posted by Giantstalker (1447 posts) -

What are the biggest ships you can get in this game, anyway? I'm curious, looked neat on Steam.

#7 Posted by kerikxi (527 posts) -

Yeah, this game is pretty amazing, especially for ten bucks. It feels especially polished for an indie game. Hope the guys do a quicklook of it.

#8 Posted by warxsnake (2626 posts) -

I cant stop thinking how badly this game would own if it allowed coop control of ships the size of the enterprise or similar. One guy in charge of away teams, another occupying engineering, etc :S

#9 Edited by mewarmo990 (821 posts) -

I agree, good stuff so far.Gets damn hard once you start running into stronger enemies if you haven't kept upgrading your ship, though.

I air out parts of the ship to kill boarders (requires blast door upgrade to slow em down). Flush 'em out the airlock!

Yupp... it's a pretty good game so far. And the first Kickstarter of a game where I received the game (don't counting "Thirty Flights of Loving" as this was a gift for a podcast Kickstarter).

#11 Posted by TheeGravedigger (76 posts) -

I'm enjoying it. Made some progress, though I'm still having trouble recovering when things get bad.

#12 Posted by ervonymous (1231 posts) -

Fun all around. So far my favorite thing's been disabling the enemy's shields and picking off the crew with an Anti-Bio Beam. The ship stays intact and you get more salvage.

I have played around 7 hours and never seen this "anti-bio" beam. Lot of stuff in this game

#14 Posted by Akyho (1550 posts) -

Its perfectly the little game to play to have a nice self made story.

My last flight go screwed up and my crew of 8 were killed when I vented the air for borders and before I closed, they blew my door control's...then the O2 unit was destroyed. And my medibay was destroyed so no healing in room or remote. So I had my two engies try and repair it but fire and explosions....yeah slowly everyone died and the only person left was my lone Rockman.

We jumped away.

He pilot the ship until he was overwhelmed by a mantis ship......

Fun game

Thought about getting this. Does it require any level of dexterity? The concept looks real cool, but I don't wanna buy it if I suck at it.

#16 Posted by YoThatLimp (1821 posts) -

I just unlocked a Zoltan Crusier, excited to check it out!

Nope, not at all. You can pause at any time to make better decisions

#17 Posted by Gargantuan (1877 posts) -

Just bought it, fun game. Managed to get to the boss on easy but died in the third battle.

#18 Posted by Rmack (1027 posts) -

I have some steam dollars and I'm considering this...how much do I need to know going in? I like roguelikes and all, but can't make out anything from screenshots or text.

#19 Posted by Iodine (532 posts) -

Are there any good videos of it out?

I am interested and have heard good things but I already have a time sink currently (endless space) and wondering if I need a new one (I know they are different kinds of games)

I'm still totally scared to take the plunge, but I'm leaning on yes

Played it for a few hours, and I dunno... Might be something Isaac did that sorta goes against the standard of rogue-likes, but I just never ever feel like I'm getting a break. In Isaac you can find items that make you excited (sure, some of them are overpowered, but still), but in FTL even when I found a weapon floating in space it wasn't anything huge. Instead of ups and downs it just feels more like a constant fight against attrition.

Edit: Just finished a game where I actually beat it (on easy), and still there wasn't really any point where I found something spectacular. The main reason I managed to beat it was just because I got a lot of scrap so I was able to rapidly upgrade my ship. I ended the game with 2 of the default lasers, one that was a tad beefier, a mark 2 anti-missile droid and a full crew. It just really felt like once I figured out what path I needed to upgrade my ship it was just a matter of how quickly I could get the scrap.

#25 Posted by BigDaddyTool (30 posts) -

If you're on the fence about getting this one you should probably know that they are not playing around with the difficulty. Like many roguelikes you will die, over and over. You get better, and you learn more about the systems and how you want to play, but yeah. Death.

That being said, I cannot stop playing it and would easily recommend it to anyone that is interested.

#26 Posted by Iodine (532 posts) -

I just got it on le steam

#27 Posted by The_Laughing_Man (13629 posts) -

Sadly I can not afford it right now. Tossed my money at Borderlands 2. How much is it anyways?

#28 Posted by skittles (156 posts) -

God damn this is a good game. I've sunk a fair few hours into it already. It's fun coming up with new ship names and names for your crew. It's sad when one of your favorite crew members gets killed. For example, when I was watching the Big Live Live Show, Live! I created some Giant Bomb members as my crew. Vinny got eaten by spiders :(

10 bucks on steam ATM, but the price will go up after the debut sale

Just my luck to miss something like this. I just watched Jesse Cox play it. Looks great.

I wasn't planning on getting this game but after reading these comments it's really charging my batteries.

also: TEAM BRAD! FUCK YEAH!

#32 Posted by Zelyre (986 posts) -

I thought the game was all right.

When I finally decided to take a break, 4 hours had passed.

So, it's actually pretty great! Once you get the ropes down and get some nice drops, its a lot of fun. Disable their O2 system, then teleport a fire bomb into the oxygen generator room. Laugh as the crew dies from burning or suffocating to death.

#33 Posted by Jams (2956 posts) -

I've been playing the hell out of it too and I can't get enough of it. I wish there was some decent guides out there or something that would let me know that my strategy is right. Out of the tons of ships I lost, only 1 has gotten to the end. I don't know if I should stay in sectors after the rebels pass through or just keep ahead. It seems to me that no matter how good you are, it all depends on what cards you're dealt. Almost to a point of it being a problem with the game, because I feel like I'm being dealt shit cards all the time.

One last thing I'll say. Trying to watch Youtube videos really reinforces to me why I buy a subscription to Giant Bomb. Every user on Youtube sounds like a complete jackass that masturbates to the sound of their own voice constantly trying to turn every sentence into a joke. It's the worst.

#34 Posted by aceofspudz (877 posts) -

Game is great. Hopefully the first of many great indie kickstarted games.

#35 Posted by TheeGravedigger (76 posts) -

@EvGar: No, Dex is not required. Slap the spacebar, the game pauses, issue your orders, slap spacebar again, action starts to play out.

#36 Posted by GunslingerPanda (4487 posts) -

Game of the Year.

#37 Posted by zombiesatemycereal (422 posts) -

Super fun game. I had a fire in the shield room so I opened the airlocks and then my oxygen got destroyed and my two remaining crew members suffocated.

I'm glad that the handful of topics this game has on GB are fairly positive/reasonable. If you look at the Steam forums, it's a million people bitching about the game being too hard (or "unbalanced"), or acting like the game doesn't have enough features and was a letdown as if it's fucking ORION: Dino Beatdown. Like, dude, the TWO guys who created the game were originally looking for a $10,000 dollar budget (many iOS games have larger budgets). Even with $200,000, they're still just guys. They're not going to suddenly make Mass Effect: The Ship Combat Game. They made a pretty fucking great game with the staff and budget they had.

Also it's amazing how many people can pick an arbitrary design choice and call it a flaw. I saw people bitching that there's no option to customize your starting stats, but like, really, who cares? Giving you certain presets is a valid design decision, and it makes it a little harder for the player to just minmax from the start and break the game.

Last. Boss. What an asshole.

#40 Posted by BonzoPongo (109 posts) -

Got to sector 8 on normal, got to the boss twice on easy, both times died on the second fight. Not sure what tactics will get me through that second boss fight. Tried it with ion blast, laser mark 3 (I think) and two anti ship bots. The other time I had missiles and lasers.

@Zaccheus said:

I don't really want them to make it easier, but it is frustrating that it just destroys certain builds. Does your ship have awesome defense, and you gradually wear down most enemy ships? Too fucking bad, your defense is irrelevant in the face of the final boss' bullshit superweapons that hit you with like 20 shots in the span of 5 seconds. Did you not bother to get the teleporter on this playthrough? Too fucking bad, you basically need it to quickly knock out the final boss' bullshit missile launcher and bullshit powerful beam, or else be totally wrecked by those weapons within about 45 seconds.

Even if you have a pretty heavily upgraded ship (max dodge, solid shields, 3+ active weapons), the weapons you bring into the fight against the final boss need to be the perfect storm of DPS that allows you to defeat him before he utterly obliterates you.

#42 Posted by Zaccheus (1770 posts) -

@BisonHero: Well said. It's cool that you can get to the boss in so many different ways, but then it can be hopeless agains him. Of course there will be some crazy wizards who do it without upgrading anything, but they don't count.

There's a decent tutorial that'll get you to grips with the fundamentals fairly quickly.

After that it's all down to ingenuity on your behalf.

#44 Posted by Ares42 (2446 posts) -

@BisonHero: All you need is to have cloak and time it correctly.

#45 Posted by warxsnake (2626 posts) -

Yeah one thing I dont like is the end game :P
Wish it was more firefly/freelancer style, taking your team and visiting other planets, trading etc.
My game designer self keeps wanting this game to have features here and there, I should just stfu and play it for what it is.

Wait, you can change crew names? I've been playing the beta for months and somehow never noticed.

So I was not able to play last night but I watched a few different let's plays, and I have a question

does having multiple people in say the shields room grant you an extra bonus to just having the one?
