Full Body Awareness Forum

Full Body Awareness is a concept that appears in 23 games

Why is this not standard yet?

How can you release first person games these days without this?
I mean, back in the day it kind of made sense because of the limitations of sprites. But ever since games started using 3D models (espec. player models available for multi-player) it's been possible to do this. So why is it so rare?

Is it a tech limitation? Is the production time too long? Some games even give you that classic round shadow when you look down. It's like they're enforcing the feeling of the player being a floating head with arms and guns.

It's none of the above. It's not a big deal.

So it's just that people and developers don't really care?

I personally think it's great if you're trying to sneak up to an edge or time a jump to actually have a sense of where the feet of your character is at as to not fall down to one of the most classic of video game deaths.

Because it takes time and development resources and doesn't effect gameplay in any significant way.

Yes. Developers don't care. Know why? Most people don't care either.

As a player I definitely think it adds to the immersion if you're physically present in the world rather than being a floating pair of hands.

But yes, it does take significant time and resources to do this  properly on the development side. Whether it's worth it depends on the style of game you're making. If atmosphere and believability is important then I would say it is.

Being able to see your feet in Mirror's Edge is actually a huge deal and has a big effect on the gameplay.

Imagine timing when to jump without them...

Most people dont care about it, adding your legs is not solving the problem either, as you should be able to see your chest to. That also means that it is more rendering to do, more codes to add, more effects to pay attention to, that in many FPS are not necessary. Some games just cut the movement to avoid reaching the classic "I dont have legs" moment, for example, Killzone 2 down sight is not 90°, its just 45°-60° at most, this means that you never reach an angle where you could actually see your feet or legs.

Its a sweet extra when you have it, like in The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butchers Bay, and in some more recent games, as Mirrors Edge. But unless its an important feature, most of us really dont get "that" bothered about it.

That's a good question. I remember when I first played the Dark Messiah demo and I was amazed that you could see your own body, simply because I hadn't seen it done before. Because Left 4 Dead let's you see your body, I fully expect HL2:Ep3 to do it as well.

"
Yeah about that, does anyone else that has played the Left 4 Dead demo on the 360 have nothing except your hands shown and no body? Because I noticed full body shown on the PC demo but when I played the 360 demo it wasn't there at all.

huh, I think they cut it out of the 360 version or something. Oh, and most people don't care about body awareness because it usually doesn't affect the type of gameplay present in most fps' which sucks really. However, I think more realistic shooters will all have body awareness because it helps TONS with the immersion and realism. Looking out for ARMA 2 and OPF2! :D

They show your legs in Left 4 Dead but I don't really care about it.

To be honest seeing my legs in a game doesn't make it easier to time jumps. It looks stupid because even though you can see your legs your body is still just a rectangle so you could stand 45% off a ledge and one leg would just be floating on thin air. I've played so many games such as Half-Life where your body is a rectangle and a matter of timing a jump is simply making sure you jump before your body is 50% off the ledge.

People pay a lot of money for High Def TV's, and would probably be discouraged from buying a game if it didn't have them, because they don't want to feel like their HDTV purchase was a waste. Full Body Awesomeness is far lower down on peoples priorities. Heck, I usually don't even notice if a game doesn't have it.
