FMVs are pre-recorded videos and pre-rendered animations used in place of real-time animation. The benefit of using FMV is the ability to display higher quality graphics than what can be achieved in real-time. The downside is that FMV requires a lot of disk space.
While FMVs are still used extensively, later years has seen a shift in how they are presented. By using in-game assets, and in many cases pre-rendering using the game engine itself, the FMVs are made to look very similar to the real-time portion of the games, while still being able to do much more then what would be possible purely in real-time. This effectively removes the stark contrasts seen in earlier games where the FMVs looked very different from the actual games. An earlier method used was to overlay in-game graphics (usually game characters) over FMV'sFull Motion Video games
