Screen from the cgi concept teaser from 2011
How the game looks now

So word going around the net right now in regards to Insomniacs new shooter is that tonally and visually they've changed it from a more lighthearted and comical game (Insomniac's forte) in to a "darker" and "grittier" and if the new screenshots are any indicator, greyer game. So they've essentially pulled a reverse Borderlands, instead of trying to stand out and be unique, interesting (within the AAA shooter space anyway) they've turned a great looking idea in to just another bland, dull, samey "we want to make another call of duty type game because we think they are all that sells".

So thanks EA, you've ruined something else in your quest for unrivaled greed and ignorance. I normally don't like jumping on the hate bandwagon but imo no one company is more deserving of this than EA right now.

And this was EAs fault because...?

#3 Edited by buzz_killington (3532 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

It's an EA Partners game. EA doesn't fuck with the developers in that program. I think it might've been an internal shift at Insomniac, maybe the tone wasn't really working for the game.

#4 Posted by ThePhantomStranger (309 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

I'm going to be super pissed if Overstrike isn't fucking amazing no matter who's fault it is.

#5 Posted by Lukeweizer (2334 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

Let's blame EA anyway. It's easier and everyone will just agree. Not that we know actually what goes on behind closed doors at a studio, but hey, it's the internet.

#6 Edited by Roland_D11 (120 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

So Insomniac changes their game, it looks worse in your opinion and that automatically is EAs fault? Interesting logic there. Fuse is an EA Partners game. Like the games EA does not really care for (bad marketing etc.). So why would they be interested in changing the look of an EA Partners game?

Another example:
What if Gearbox shows how Furious 4 looks now (they are changing it) and it looks worse in your opinion then, is that the fault of Gearbox or 2K Games? Or is that ok, because it is not the evil, evil EA?

#7 Posted by GunstarRed (4026 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

I'm a little disappointed at the visual style in newer shots as I loved the style in the original teaser, but I'd like to see an actual trailer of gameplay before I start saying it looks like the worst game in the world ever and EA are satan etc etc. Insomniac put out quality games and it's still about aliens and weird over the top guns. To say EA are responsible for the new direction is silly. Nobody bitched when Naughty Dog did something similar with Uncharted.

Jesus, look at that dudes head! It looks like they saved production time by buying left over character renders from the Small Soldiers movie.

My general disinterest in this game is at about the same level as it was when it was first revealed.

#12 Posted by ajamafalous (10607 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

Regardless of whose fault it is it's pretty disappointing. Game went from cool R&C-reminiscent aesthetic to generic and bland with an even more generic name.

I hear that EA once built a time machine and partially funded the Nazi party, all so they could make the Medal of Honor franchise.

Yup. According to a recent gamespot preview, it's meant to be a mix Resistance's grittiness and... well, it's apparently still meant to be funny, just not R&C-style funny; more sardonic and dry, which definitely sounds similar to the sort of humour in the announcement trailer. But the change in visual tone is definitely unfortunate, regardless of why, and who decided for it. Still curious to see this in action, though.

#29 Posted by phantomzxro (1269 posts) - 8 months, 10 days ago

i won't generalize because we don't know who made the final choice to change the tone and look of the game but all i can say is i am quite a bit disappointed because this game just looks the same as any other shooter now, and the dark and gritty back stories don't seem needed . I will hold out for some game play and more details to judge like many others but at this time this game is kinda off my radar.

Insomniac says it was their decision, justifies it.

Forum poster blame EA.

Yep this sure is a video game forum.

Why don't we see the game in video form first, as well?

It was CGI concept trailer, you really can't be serious?

#48 Posted by believer258 (7861 posts) - 8 months, 9 days ago

That was probably Insomniac's choice. They do seem to be itching to break into the "serious" market of games, what with them giving Resistance quite a push.

Besides, maybe it's because I was just playing it but it looked a lot like Just Cause 2 to me - and that game is far from anything resembling "seriousness" or "realism".
