Gaiares

Gaiares is a side-scroller shoot'em up, notable for allowing players to customize their weapons by leeching them out of enemies, as opposed to acquiring traditional power-ups.

Side-scrolling shooter by Renovation which features a hovering option-like ship that you can position around you. This machine can be deployed to destroy enemies in front of you, OR it can be used to steal the powers of the targeted ship. This stealing takes a short time and only destroys the target, rather than destroying the other, usually fast-moving, craft, so it's a risky maneuver, but the only way to get the powers hidden in the game. There are other power ups that are dropped as well, however.

You can even steal powers from boss characters. That's just crazy.

Each mission has multiple stages, changing enemies and direction to move through the parallax-scrolling backgrounds.

The plot is shown at the beginning through several minutes of minimally animated, anime-style cutscenes with dialogue and explanations in text.
