Game Recomendations?

#1 Edited by ZipCrash (214 posts) -

I have made another purchase based on a Giant Bomb video (SimGolf being another) and bought a Game Boy and a copy of Motocross Maniac. I had a Game Boy when I was a kid but I pretty much spent the entirity of my time with it playing Tetris and Wario. So what Game Boy games would you recommend I go purchase? I already have Super Mario Land on the way as I'm a huge Mario fan. Any good Zeldas for Game Boy? Thanks guys.

If I had to recommend a GB game I would recommend Pokemon, Kirby and Zelda: LA

Skate or Die: Bad 'N Rad and Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

Solar Striker.

Link's Awakening is the big must have. Super Mario Land 2 is fantastic as well. While the first Super Mario Land felt a bit gimped by the hardware, the second one looks and feels like it could have been released on the SNES.

What version of the Game Boy do you have?

Dude, the Pokemon Trading Card Game is so much god damn fun, you should play that. It's an old game, so it only goes up to the Fossil expansion (Which, really, are the only cards I care about anyway). PLAY IT SON!

Final Fantasy Adventure was one of my favorites on Game Boy as a kid. I guess its technically a Mana game and not a FF game, but whatever. It was a ton of fun.

Other favorites of mine were TMNT, Gargoyles Quest, and Dragon Warrior I/II.

I think all the GB Zeldas are great, but Link's Awakening is the best for sure. Also, Duck Tales 1&2.

Tetris and Pokemon Yellow, that's it....maybe

Links awakening is probably one of the best portable games ever imo

Pokemon Red, Blue or Yellow and Gold and Silver are absolute must haves. If you have a DS you could just get one of the newer versions, but there's a lot of nostalgia from the old gameplay and basic sprites.

Link's Awakening is pretty amazing too, it's easily one of my favourite Zelda games and probably on par with Link to the Past. It's criminally overlooked by most fans (the DX version is better, if you have a Gameboy Colour).

Zool, Ninja of the Nth Dimension!

Was it a good game? couldn't tell you, probably not, but the music was great.

Every GB Kirby game.

Did you get a GBA or a regular gameboy/gameboy color?

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and Wario Land 2. Donkey Kong and the Donkey Kong Land games (2 is the only one I've actually played, but it's good). Dragon Warrior Monsters. And, if you bought a Gameboy Color, Metal Gear Solid.

Then there's all the aforementioned greats like Link's Awakening, Pokemon (go with Yellow and Crystal), Mario Land 2, etc.

Avoiding mentioning anything above I'd recommend Gargoyle's Quest, and Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge.

the only thing worth playing on a gameboy is Tetris imo. and even then make sure you got a good light other wise its shit.

Wow, thanks guys! A lot to check for sure. All though I don't think I'll get any of the Pokemons (at least the RPGs), I had my fill when I was younger on the Game Boy Color. If I recall correctly, I might even been just playing the original Game Boy versions on my color. Either way I spent a ton of time with them and have had no desire to go back.

I feel all my picks have been mentioned, but just to go ahead and drill them in - Link's Awakening, Pokemon (TCG, RBY), Wario Land, anything Kirby, Metroid 2. Any other games I played I feel are just good for nostalgias sake - these, however, have stood up to the test of time.

Que my nostalgia; I have no idea if you have the OGGB or the GBC nor what genres you like; I'll stick with original GB titles only (NOTE: I own all of these titles and played them)

  • Pokemon Red and Blue
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (It's illegal to own a GB without this)
  • Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge
  • Donkey Kong Land I & II
  • Dr. Mario
  • Final Fantasy Legend I & II (Wasn't a big fan of III)
  • Mortal Kombat 3
  • Kirby's Dreamland 2
  • Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge (warning this game is hard- but you'll be a MM master by time you're done)
  • Metroid II: Return of Samus
  • NBA Jam
  • Ninja Gaiden Shadow
  • Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

Now I gotta whip my Game Boy out of the vault lol.

Solar Striker

It's good.

I've only played through these on 3ds virtual console, but Cat Trap and Trip World are pretty swell. Also, Link's Awakening is (arguably) the best Zelda game.
