    Games for Windows - Live

    Concept »

Microsoft's PC branch of its Live service. Lends the same functionality as Xbox Live Gold to Games For Windows games including cross-platform compatibility for achievements, friends & messages, downloadable content, and in some cases, multiplayer.

Do I still need to insert discs to play my boxed retail games?

Games for Windows was updated lately, so that you can buy PC games through it's store, Steam style. Now that it's a stand-alone client, do I still need to keep my discs for Gears of War, Halo 2 and Viva Pinata around? Or can I put my product keys into GFWL somewhere and download the games disc-less?

Yep. Well, I don't think you need it for Halo 2. I remember playing it a few times without a disc when it was released. But I do know you still need it for Gears of War and Viva Pinata.
