The first few days of release, Gears was laggy as all hell and chainsaws ruled the scenes because bullets would not stop them. Additionally, lots of people thought that the shotgun was the most inaccurate piece of shit ever during this time.
Cut to a week later, and the exact opposite applies when Microsoft fixed its service for less lag: shotguns rule, chainsaws don't (although they are used more often than in Gears 1, so kudos to that).
Anyone else have the same experience?
And, if this is true, this means that no amount of weapon balance will fix the Lancer/Shotgun strategy dynamic because the better weapon depends on the latency of the game, which isn't really measurable. (If you took an 'average', which intuitively is greater than zero lag and less than 'holy-shit-I-can't-move' lag, this average would imply that all clan-playing Gears fans (who probably have great hosting connections) would automatically get a shotgun buff, while matchmaking players who get unlucky will suddenly find the shotgun effing useless and chainsaws godly).

Lag contributes to weapon balance more than it should
"The chainsaw is still a vortex of death which I still don't think it should be. However, it does seem easier to drop a chainsaw now with a shotgun so I'm happy ;D"Chainsaw > Shotgun. :P
I think it also depends on good the player is. Not being very good myself, I've had my head blown off by a shotgun when trying to chainsaw people plenty of times.
"Discorsi said:See, situations like that are good. And it sucks that you'd be ridiculed for becoming ''good with the chainsaw' because so many people see it as a newbie's weapon. One guy I was matchmaking with was awesome at luring shotgun idiots around corners and surprising them by removing their torso. Chainsaws are an effective counter to the shotgun, and they exist in the game for a reason."The chainsaw is still a vortex of death which I still don't think it should be. The chainsaw I think is slightly overpowered, but shotguns feel right to me. When I get a kill I can understand why and when I miss I understand why. I think it's greatly improved over Gears 1. If anything needs to be changed in my opinion it's the "vacuum" range of the chainsaw. You get "sucked" in sometimes when you really shouldn't be. Sometimes you see you or the chainsawer slide into you with it.
I just feel like most weapons can't stop the chainsaw now, lol
Yeah, that's the thing - if everyone is getting 1/2 second bullet lag, then the shotgun is worthless. If, however, the lag is manageable, then I honestly think things are pretty even. It's not that hard to two-piece someone who tries to chainsaw you, and that's good enough for me.
As for Territory games - yeah, getting that Meatflag achievement nearly made me quit the game. Seriously, I haven't touched Territories since then. Then again, grenades are another reason who Territory games suck - it's not entirely the chainsaw's fault.
Remember that you can achievement grind with bots as well. You don't HAVE to play with other people to get the majority of all the achievements (of course the co-op campaign will require another human being, lol)

Yeah, believe me, I got all of the achievements I could by doing private/local/bot games, but there are some that you have to do on ranked matches. Also, I want to be decently ranked on Elimination, and the lag should be more manageable than it is some of the time.
"You should have to rev the chainsaw with B and lunge with it using the right trigger."
That doesn't sound half bad, honestly. It wouldn't even have to take more than a few seconds, but as long as it's more than people sitting there holding 'B' on a laggy connection and owning you for a match, then I'm happy.
