Gears of War 3

The third and final installment in the Gears of War trilogy. Taking place on the apocalyptic planet Sera, 18 months after the ending of Gears of War 2, players will once again take control of C.O.G. soldier Marcus Fenix as he takes on the Locust threat and their Lambent rivals.

Concepts

Grief Beard

A grief beard is facial hair that appears on a character after something tragic happens to him in a storyline. The amount of tragedy and how the man is handling it can often be seen in the beard itself.
Gunker

A large creature from Gears of War 3 that can launch explosive balls of imulsion.
Hardcore Mode

Regular difficulty not difficult enough? Enable hardcore mode for a more brutal gaming experience.
Headshot

Most modern shooting games add the realistic touch of rendering shots to the cranium instantly fatal. Glorious for the shooter, kind of a bummer to the shootee.
Heavy

A heavy is a class of enemy that can withstand more damage, thanks to body armor, a larger physique, or other characteristics. They are often armed with heavier weapons.
Henchmen

Henchmen are the loyal grunts caught in between the player and the main antagonist. Without them every game would be nothing more then a last boss battle.
Hero's Single Parent

Raising a kid by yourself is hard. Hopefully, your kid turns out to be the chosen one and heads off for adventure by the time they're 16.
Heroic Sacrifice

When a character or group of characters does something extremely brave on behalf of another character or group of characters, knowing that they will get killed or seriously injured in the process.
High Definition Graphics

A console game is high definition if it operates at a resolution of at least 720p, or 1280x720. A console able to achieve this resolution is HD-capable. For a variety of reasons, the term does not apply to PC games.
Horde Mode

"Horde" is a type of multiplayer game mode in which players battle co-operatively against increasingly difficult waves of computer-controlled enemies.
Human

Humans are bipedal, sapient primates capable of abstract reasoning, language, and emotions.
Human Shield

A Human Shield is a form of cover in which a player uses a body to absorb damage like that of a shield. It's usually found in first and third-person shooters.
Improvised Weapon

The use of everyday objects and turning them into death dealing weapons of destruction.
In-Game Achievement Menu

A list of games that have their own in-game graphical achievement menu. Used for showing current progress towards achievements or trophies.
Kantus

A new monk-like Locust that revives downed Locusts and summons Rockworms with a low chant.
Kill Feed

A standard in nearly all competitive online shooters, the Kill Feed is the live on-screen update of the kills in an multiplayer game, providing updates as to whom is killing whom, as well as other important events.
King of the Hill

King of the Hill is a popular game mode where the players have to stay in a designated area of a map to gain points. This mode is becoming increasingly popular in shooters.
Lambent

The Lambent are Immulsion-infected Locusts that glow and grow tentacles. They begin to attack the regular Locusts and explode after being killed. The Lambent are instinct-driven and only care about one thing: killing all other life forms.
Late Title Card

When the title of the game does not appear immediately at the beginning of the game, but rather after a first mission or prologue.
Locust Horde

The Locust Horde are the main enemies in Gears of War with multiple types to crush the COG military. It is unknown whether the Locust are truly indigenous to Sera, but it is known that they will die for control of Sera.
Male Protagonists

This concept is for games in which the main character is male.
Military

Armed forces. The arm of government that deals with fighting wars and protecting a nation from external or internal threats
Motion Blur

A post processing effect that blurs and streaks the entire frame. Loosely based on the behavior of real-world optics.
Non-Standard Difficulty Titles

Games in which, instead of playing on "Easy" or "Hard", you play on "Marine" or "Way of the Samurai".
On Disc DLC

DLC that is technically available on the disc, but requires the player to buy a key separate from the game to activate it.
Online

Games which allow players to interact with others over the internet.
Original Soundtrack Release

Games that have had an Original Soundtrack album released.
Over-the-Shoulder

In Gears of War 3 lessons from the previous games have been taken and the over-the-shoulder perspective perfected.
Pack-In Game

Game bundled with gaming hardware (usually a console) in order to boost sales. Most often these games are first party titles, meaning that the hardware and software are products of the same company.
PAX East 2011

The second annual PAX East took place at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center in Boston, Massachusetts on March 11-13, 2011.
