Gears of War has a very deep storyline, its just that Epic didn't show it well enough for people to actually grasp hold the the concept.

    Gears of War novels... :/
    "
There is a large backbone that was created, but it is obvious that none of them were really explored in the first game. You had glimpses of interesting tidbits of the world from the Stranded to Marcus' trial, but you really didn't get much of the story at all or the world that it encompasses. Sure, the first game had a basic plot of "we gotta go here and do this," but it is truly being built in the first game and other products such as the novel (as you linked), comics, movie, and the sequel.

i think they had some story elements in some of the original trailers...none of that made it into the game sadly.

I got the story during the game, i think most people focus so much on the online aspect, and the fact that it only has 5 levels and it puts them off following the great story

It's pretty unfortunate that the campaign's story is so clunky -- the game is co-written by Eric Nylund (the scribe behind the Halo novels), so there is no real reason for the plot to be, well, rather disfunctional.

Maybe with Gears 2, we'll start seeing some sincere development.  It won't take much for me to get excited about dousing some (not-so) poor Locust soul with flames, but a sensible story would be great.

Why try to be something for the sake of formality? GoW creates it`s tension during gameplay, not during cutscenes. Some games ARE better if they don`t try to create deep storylines.

It definitely falls under the radar when playing the game(most of the story elements) Cuz at its core,I don't think people that are big Gears fans are playing for an some complex story. Thats the only thing that has me worried about the story in Gears 2. They're going down the road of trying to make it alot of "serious" and "emotional",I just hope it doesn't ruin the game.

Actually the chainsaw is improved in gears 2 there will even be chainsaw dualing. For example: If two players run into each other with chainsaws, they'll collide into a little mini-game. Say you win the mini-game. Then depending on how you played the mini game you chainsaw the opponent a different way every time. I saw it on a little in-game gow2 clip realeased from epic games but I could not find the link...

Yes. It had  a good back story, in my opinion. It just wasn't presented in the game itself. I hope these novels are good, I'll be sure to pick them up.

If you really paid attention to Gears 1 the story is good.  I have the novel and I'm about half through it, and so far it's a good read.

However, Gears 1 wasn't very detailed, but if you let your imagination run wild you can think of so many theories and speculate how the Locusts came to be.

Actually, I would say that the tone gets sorta similar in spots.  It's not like they are identical, but they both have a military force fighting for the survival of humanity where they still seem like fascist bad guys.  I thought Gears actually did that part really well, although it didn't explore it in much depth.

It is in the sense that service in the military against this insectoid threat guarantees greater rights and the military essentially controls the society that they're in.

Well, epic did drop the ball on the beginning of gears 1. You have to read the instruction book to find out why marcus was in prison when you first meet him.

I love the story in the Gears games.
Straightforward, well acted, and not bogged down with bullshit.
