Gears of War review
Gears of war is a third person shooter game. Its not just a run and gun shooter. This game is a tactical shooter or stop and pop as Epic explains it.
Gears of war’s gameplay is nothing short of amazing. The game makes you use cover if you want to survive more than a minute. The games cover is all done through the “a” button which will quickly become the most used button in the game for you. This action button controls roadie run (ducking and sprinting at the same time), entering cover, and use the action with the analog sick to before action rolls and swat rolls in cover. The stop and pop works simple in the game just as the cover does, you simply use the left trigger to aim and right trigger to shoot, you can just shoot with out aiming but its pretty much useless unless with a shotgun. The controls in the game are smooth, and you can tell they have worked on the for a long time so it’s conferrable for the player. It’s a shooter game, so how are the guns? Well they are amazing, well balanced and strong. The main weapon which is the lancer is the normal assault rifle, included with a chainsaw. Now the chainsaw is a fun and easy weapon to use, you simply press and hold the “b” button and then pull the right trigger when close to a enemy. The other guns all have melee attacks done by the same button, and are also pretty strong. The multiplayer doesn’t play to much different from the single player story mode. The chainsaw is there, and everything else that is all fun. There are three modes that all are fun. The one thing you can do more in multiplayer than in single player is curb stomping, when a enemy falls on all fours run up to him and shoot him, chainsaw him, or well curb em.
The story in gears of war isn’t as bad as every one says. I recommend you start on the hardcore difficulty. This difficulty makes you use the cover more often, and it also takes longer to beat this great game. The story in general is not too bad. Its not a RPG so don’t come into it expecting this huge epic story. It’s a shooter so it was a story like every other shooter. As you guessed there is not closure to the story, simply because they want to leave room for a second game.
The graphics in gears of war are… simple stunning. They are the best graphics you will see on xbox 360, or ps3 this year. The graphics are amazing, in on act you will be outside and there is rain just pouring down. And you look at the ground and you can see every drop hitting the puddles. The animations in this game are great, the players move their mouths when talking or laughing. The lighting effects are also the best this year. The games cut scenes are all done in real time, so their sometimes is a little bit of a frame rate drop at the start of them.
The sound in this game is brilliant. The guns pack the punch you want from them. The chainsaw sounds great. The sound of your gun getting hit by the bullets even sounds great. Everything down to the rain sounds great. The music in the game is amazing; it really has that feeling to it when you’re running through these levels. The only problem with the music is, you can’t really remember it. It doesn’t really have its own theme song like halo does. The voice acting really brings the game to life, its not just some cheap voice acting like in some shooters. No they really brought the game to life with the actors.
This game is worth the full price you pay for it, with the great single player, and the great multiplayer. You will be playing this game for a long time!
