I have to say, Gears of War is probably one of the most disappointing games I've played in a while. I can't stand the half ass story line and the shitty voice acting. The environments are ridiculously repetative, and the multiplayer isn't very welcoming at all. I found myself getting killed right off the bat with no idea why or how I died. The camera is not well suited at all to the kind of gameplay it uses either. Someone please tell me what I'm not seeing. I have to say even Halo 3 beats the shit out of this multiplayer.

The multiplayer isn't for everyone But I think the reason most people were originally drawn to the game was it's grittiness. It definitely doesn't shy away from blood, curb stomping, chainsaws, etc.

Yeah I agree. The blood and gore is about the only thing done right in the game. Even the shooting feels clunky. Having to aim with the left trigger to even be somewhat accurate isn't ideal for the kind of multiplayer it sports. Online, everyone is so good now that it was impossible for me to fire an accurate shot before being sniped or chainsawed. I can't say I agree with most critics on this one. Just doesn't hold together in my book.

As a blue namer I know I won't have much of an opinion on this, but even when I owned a 360 I prefered Halo.

I really enjoyed what I saw of the first Gears. I've not played it all the way through but I'd be compelled to if I owned a 360.

@atlantabrave04:  Sell it if you don't like it?  Seriously, if everybody on this website came and made a bitch-thread for every game that disappointed them I'd have more fun reading Edgar Allen Poe while dripping candle wax onto my eyeballs.

I prefer Gears 2 to be honest. I like them both, but I've spent more time with Gears 2.

Just saying, while yeah a forum's a great place to express an opinion...this thread doesn't really stimulate any good conversation.

Giving you some legit advice is all.  Selling bad games is fun!

Well on the multiplayer its hard to get in to a gears game now because most of the player on their no all the glitches by hart and will own your ass so that makes it less fun for sure...

It started the cover system trend. Your problem is in playing it a couple years late. It's not like those Gears one reviews were done last week, after all the OTHER active-cover games refined things, including Gears 2. It was very much clunky, but you don't notice when there's nothing to compare it to.

I really liked the first Gears of War because of its simplicity .  just run and gun .. and take cover ... and gun more.

I mean yea the story was meh and it was horribly repetitive,  but yet very compelling .

@Novyx:
I know, I have a bad habit of playing popular games too late.

@atlantabrave04: You're also playing a game that came out in 2006. Between the number of people who have had three years to get insanely good at the multiplayer and the changing standards for games, I'm not surprised that you aren't seeing what all the fuss is about. Most games don't age well, especially when the last three years of shooters have incorporated a lot of the things that Gears popularized. Just consider it a history lesson.

@Jeff:
I know, but in all honesty, there are games that do age well, but I guess Gears of War is not that kind of game. And I agree with it's influence. The cover system was ingenious when it came out in 06.

Gears 2 is better. Horde mode is really fun.

I didn't enjoy the first gears. I don't know why, something just didn't click with me. But I loved Gears 2, and after that I went back to the original and loved that too. I dunno why. I guess I'm just weird.

I thought it was a fun game to play with a buddy. That being said, I didn't love it enough to warrant the purchase of it's sequel.
But you're absolutely right, that multiplayer business is seriously uninviting. If you don't have a vet watching you're back, you're screwed.

You dont have to be impressed. I wasn't either, and I'm still not. For some reason, the Resident Evils (4 and 5) have been the only third person shooters i've liked.

I fully agree with what this guy and Jeff both said.  It is an old game.  If you went and played Super Mario for the first time right after Castle Crashers you'd probably have a similar complaint.  It was a great game when it came out because the mulitplayer it offered, although still a somewhat face paced shooter experience, was unique.  The story was somewhat retarded I think most can agree on that, but it is easy to over look when you play this style of game for the first time, not to mention those graphics were amazing, and really still aren't bad.

I didn't like the first Gears at all, even when it was new.  Bad graphics, bad framerate, boring action.  The 2nd Gears is so much better.  I went from hating it to liking it a lot.

It would also be different if I could actually see the cover system actually USED in the multiplayer aspect of the game. I noticed that the trend was to run up to your enemy and blindly fire a shotgun in his face, which isn't much fun at all if you've just come from the campaign, in which you absolutely must use cover to survive. It's similar to situations in other games where players exploit a single weapon or tactic resulting in boring gameplay. I dunno, I guess it was stupid of me to hope for a slower, more tactical multiplayer.
