Hey cats!

The third episode of Context Sensitive, the show that I host with my good friend Abhishek is up right here: http://intercontinentalgem.com/Video%20Game%20review.html (just hit Context Sensitive episode 3 in the flash player). Tell us what you think!

I blame Canada for the length of this show and for the PC crash that halted the recording last week. Your hosts, however, don't blame anyone for all great and not so great games they've been playing in the mean time. Jason hops in the ring with UFC 2009, gets a ton of games for free, and gives Gears 2 the cold shoulder. Steven heads back to the wasteland in Fallout 3, finishes his second run through of Fable 2, and hates on the Battlefield Heroes beta. Plus the news and the NPDs for April. Tune in for a jam packed show.

What games are you going to try and get your grade up in?

Added by Shaunage on Jan. 2, 2009

Let's get this out of the way right up front: 2007 was an absolutely incredible year for games. I think 2008 may very well have topped it. Say whatever you want about 1998, I think these last two years have been the best two in gaming history.

The following list of games was taken from Giant Bomb's voting form for GOTY 2008. I've included everything I played, even if I only played a demo or played it for a few seconds. Here, in brief, is what I thought of these games:

Condemned 2

I was a HUGE fan of the first game, playing it through completely 3 or 4 times at least. The second Condemned didn't immediately grab me like the original did. I've played the first level and most of the second and I just don't like it as much. I still fully intend to play through it and I may love it when I do, but the fact is that for most of the time the game is just a black screen, often literally. It's not a world I want to be in and while I realise that is exactly the point, I'm just not having fun.

Guitar Hero World Tour

I have been the single biggest advocate of the Guitar Hero series including having the rare, maybe unique opinion that Guitar Hero 3 is the best music game so far. I still LIKE Guitar Hero WT, just nowhere near as much. The new guitar is fantastic and the guitar gameplay is mostly improved, though the touch pad is worthless at best and intrusive at worst. The purple notes are okay but they are overused. I'd rather have seen them ONLY used for trills and actual slide parts, instead of just any random solo, since outside of stuff you need to tap they just get in the way and make it harder to hit easy stuff. The new hold note mechanic is great where it's used, making really easy bits that much more interesting to play. My drum kit doesn't work and Kmart wouldn't take it back, even though Activision said they would. I'm going to have to buy a Rock Band 360 kit just for this game and honestly, I'd rather just not play the drums. Too much hardware hassle. This initial hardware problem coloured my entire impression on GHWT as an overall really sloppy product. The bass is improved vastly by the addition of the open note. The singing is functional mostly but again it just seems really messy compared to Rock band (RB2, espcially). The cheering crowd and freeform singing parts are absolutely worthless and add less to the song than just leaving those sections blank would have. Instrument specifics aside, the overall package - The achievements are a disappointing list, with nothing for 5 starring expert. That's really weak. Maybe a blessing though, since Satch Boogie is the single dumbest thing I have ever seen, in a video game or otherwise. Congratulations on finally having difficulty achievements stack. I'd have 1000 in GH3 if that had been there in that game. The tracklist is fine, with a few real stand out tracks in Scream Aim fire and the two Ozzy Osbourne songs, but overall it lacks the personality I found in the GH2, 3 and Rock Band 1 setlists. This may just be because of the literally hundreds of songs available in music games now having kind of worn down anything that made a song being picked a special thing. I really wish GH had stayed as just a guitar game, because honestly I think the same game with only that one instrument may have been a better game. I still play a lot of it, don't get me wrong, but it seems that my interest in music games has peaked and is on the decline. That sentence shocks me more than anyone, because I put maybe 1000 hours into GH3.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

I already wrote about this - Played it through 3 times in a row. Liked it more than I expected. Not a brilliant game, but just kept me interested for some reason.

Braid

Absolutely loved it. Played it through a bunch of times and then went back and got my last 15 points for the 45 minute speedrun. The comparison has been made to Portal and I think it's very nearly up to that high standard. I may be alone in this but the "story stuff" between worlds was probably the best writing in any game and probably doubled the impact of the game for me. That's saying a lot, too, seeing how good the puzzles were. Anyone with a 360 and a Live connection who doesn't own Braid is doing themselves an enormous disservice. Complain about the 1200 point price all you want, the game is worth more than twice that and you're making yourself look like an idiot.

Rock Band 2

I just wrote an enormous paragraph about a music game and I'm not going to do it again. All of the instruments actually work in this game, apart from gallops on the guitar for whatever reason. Also, one bad addition, the hammer on chords DO NOT WORK. EVER. Guitar is worse than GH, Drums and Vocals are infinitely better. Again, only a few songs on the disc setlist I really love, but there are over 500 songs in the game now, including some of my all time favourites (Sorrow, Toxicity) since I buy ALL DLC. You heard me, every single song. Which reminds me, the DLC in GHWT is pretty much all garbage apart from the free ones (Anything and Electro Rock) which are actually two of the game's best songs. Rock Band 2 is a very good game with a great if flawed set of modes. What happened to the single player setlist? There is no excuse for removing it. The single player World Tour and the challenges are very impressive, though.

Wii Fit

I played Wii Fit at a friend's house for about an hour. Like I assumed, this is not a game and I want no further part in it. I hate Nintendo so much for the Wii. You have no idea.

Geometry Wars 2

The original was brilliant and this is too. It's changed enough to not make the original obsolete, unlike at least two games on this list (Rock Band 2, Viva Pinata TIP). The new modes didn't all click with me, but the ones that did made the game more than worth the asking price. Pacifism. So good. I hadn't had a friend's list highscore battle since... ever, so it was great to have it there. I never finished Sequence.

Soul Calibur 4

I loved SC2 back on the Xbox, barely touched 3, barely touched 4. There's just no substance to them at all. I did love DOA4, but I am about ready to completely give up on fighting games. I was really excited before this game's release but now that I have it I just don't care at all. I can't see myself going back to it.

COD World at War

I'm playing on Normal and the game is slaughtering me. I keep getting angry enough and turning it off. Keifer Sutherland helps, but I just don't like the game much. That may change once I get further in.

Pixeljunk Eden

I don't get it. Next.

Viva Pinata 2

I wrote about this at length. Loved it. It didn't quite strike me in the way the original did, but there's no disputing it's a much better game. EXACTLY the sequel I was waiting for.

Mirror’s Edge

I liked it. A lot. A huge lot. The main complaint I see people make is that the shooting sucks. Don't shoot, then. There's an achievement for getting through it without shooting, so obviously you can. I got that achievement on my first run through the game and LOVED it. For the most part the jumping worked fine, too. Bonus points for having a credits song called "Still Alive".

Saints Row 2

When the first Saints Row came out, I didn't even intend to buy it. I played the demo and realised it wasn't just some GTA knock off, went to EB the next day and bought it. I think the original game was better than GTA 3, VC or SA. You heard me. Saints Row 2 improves on some of the first game's annoyances, doing away with the extremely hard last two levels of each activity and adding more different ones. Granted, most of the new ones are awful, but you don't have to do them for too long so they never get game destroying. GTA caught up this year, though, and that cover mechanic was sorely missed in SR2. I'm not going to say which of the two games (SR2, GTA4) I think is better, I think they're different enough that you should play both. Had a lot of fun with the story in this one, too. SR2 was an unfortunate victim of this year's amazing release schedule. Criminally overlooked.

Castle Crashers

I just... don't like it. Sorry, I don't. I got about 3 hours in and just gave up. Scrolling beat-em-ups work because they take like half an hour to beat. Too long, too repetitive, too much level grinding. No fun. I appreciate the art and character design, I just think the gameplay is awful.

Devil May Cry 4

Barely touched this one so far. I've watched the intro 20 minute-odd cutscene and the game appears to still be over the top and ridiculous. That's all well and good. I hope to enjoy this after I beat DMC3 (Should I buy 1 and 2? Yes I know everyone hates 2. Why?)

Echochrome

One of the best game concepts out there. Gameplay? I'm afraid it doesn't quite live up to it. A lot of things that should work flat out don't. No consistency at all. This destroys the whole idea of the game and left me pretty disappointed. Worth a play with and probably worth the $10 but not the game I was hoping for.

Left 4 Dead

I love zombies. The concept of a zombie apocalypse may very well be my single favourite thing. Left 4 Dead takes this amazing concept and makes it into an absolutely astounding game. I can not imagine a better zombie game (except maybe one ten times as long as this...) Left 4 dead is a very serious contender for my game of the year and if it had twice as many campaigns it wouldn't even be a contest.

Sonic Unleashed

I've played the demo through a few times and I sort of like it. Sort of. I'm torn over whether to buy the full game or not. Those werehog levels are the real worry for me. That and the downright abysmal reviews.

FarCry 2

I had no idea it was open world before I bought it. I was kind of disappointed. There's something to be said for a great looking linear FPS I can play through once and never look at again. Certainly not BAD, just not the game I wanted. Might not finish this one for ages.

Ikaruga

This is the Dreamcast game I loved but with achievements. Sure, most of them are near impossible, but I did get the A (S?) rank one for the first level. An excellent addition to the XBLA. Being able to watch leaderboard videos is a brilliant addition.

Motorstorm 2

I played the first Motorstorm for about 6 hours before deciding I absolutely hated it. Great premise, driving and crashing, not so good. I downloaded the demo for Motorstorm 2, fully ready to buy the game if a few small changes had been made. They had not. I did not. I don't like it at all.

GTA4

Giant Bomb's GOTY 2008. I liked it a lot. Probably not my game of the year, but very very good. The best GTA by an absolute landslide. Some minor annoyances (phone calls, driving to the 3 leaf clover mission 20 times or more) made up for by a very well written VERY well acted story which genuinely kept my interest for the full 30 hours it took to beat. While I didn't have the same emotional reaction Jeff and the restof the GB crew did to the game, that's a very personal thing. I don't really have to say any more than that - you all played it. You know why it's as good as it is.

Mercenaries 2

Bought mostly on the hype from right here at Giant Bomb. I never played Mercs 1. I enjoyed Mercs 2, which I did finish, but only after I turned off the sound. The game is not as funny as it thinks it is and I just don't care about the story. A complete mess of a game, but I ended up liking it more than the GB guys did, which seems a bit ironic.

LittleBigPlanet

I played a Silent Hill inspired level the other night which was one of the best things I have ever seen anyone do with anything. I've spent a long time with a friend on a blank creation screen making rockets and windmills and golf ball machineguns and... The creation aspects of this game are excellent. The character design on Sackboy and his available costumes are great, too. The music is good and very fitting. I am not liking the single player missions much at all. It's a fantastic toolset and every now and then something brilliant will be made from it. I don't want to talk mess about it but it's not even close to game of the year material.

Mega Man 9

A weird one. I love the concept of the game and I think they executed it flawlessly. I love the sense of satisfaction I got from finally beating those first 8 bosses after hoooours of thinking I'd never beat a second one. I can't beat the wily castle levels and I don't think I ever will. I wish I was one of the crazy people who could beat this game in an hour etc for the ridiculous achievements, but I will never be at that level - I didn't play the old megaman games at all - this is the first one I've ever played for more than about 5 minutes. I love that it exists.

Dead Space

Fantastic atmosphere. With a set of headphones and the lights off, intensely scary. I loved the first level, died in a room with about 8 creatures all at once near the start of level 2 and turned it off in disgust. I am likely to enjoy it a whole lot.

Prince of Persia

A great looking game. The dialog is idiotic for the most part but I enjoyed the platforming enough to let it slide. The game flat out refuses to kill you - to the point that it feels like it's apologising any time you do something wrong. It's also very forgiving with timing and aiming of jumps. Basically if the game has any idea at all what you were trying to do, it will give it to you. I loved the Sands of Time trilogy - all three games - and I thought they improved each time. Prince of Persia (which could have benifited greatly for a subtitle of any sort) is not as good as those games, but I still liked it very very much. They changed enough to make it feel completely different and, outside of a few steps backwards from Two Thrones (fighting is trash, but mostly avoidable, pole jumping had a feature removed, but had one added also) is a fantastic game all around and is a very promising start to a new series. I don't want to spoil anything about the end, so I won't say what I want to about that. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it. I certainly do.

Resistance 2

Untouched. I'm working through the original first, a pretty okay shooter which is way WAY too long.

Gears of War 2

I can confirm that this is the second Gears of War game. Plays very similarly but without a completely worthless driving part to spoil the overall quality of the game (the tank part included is preeeeetty good). The story has a lot more impact this time around, with some things going very poorly for characters we've grown to like. Without wanting to spoil it, I think they took a weak route with one part and they should have switched Tai with Baird. Excellent game but for some reason I feel less compelled to replay it than I was with Gears 1, which I finished at least 4 times. Also I find myself, having done the 50 waves of the excellent Horde, completely uninterested in the multiplayer.

Fable 2

It's fine, but it's not as good as everyone seems to think. Story opens very strongly but from there on in I think it's a mess. Nowhere near the impact of the first Fable's story for me. The jobs and pub games are worthless. The dog is a good addition. Molyneux lied about the fighting, surprise surprise. I don't have all that much to say. It's not BAD, but it's nowhere near the level of quality everyone thinks it is. It's a 7/10.

Penny Arcade

With no admiration for turn based RPGs and no real intention to play it I bought this obscenely priced game because I love Penny Arcade. I bought Episode 2 as well. The first 5 minutes of the first one got me laughing and that's really all that counts here.

Banjo Kazooie 3

Barely touched. I never played the originals but I'm kind of excited to get into this. Brad has sold me on it completely.

Bionic Commando Rearmed

I've played a level or two, I loved the first boss fight but I just can't get used the the swinging mechanic. The time trials are infuriating.

Burnout Paradise

Oh boy. I spent a full 70 hours in Burnout Paradise, after loving 3 and hating Revenge. I 100%ed the game. All billboards, all jumps, all races and licenses, all fences, all roads ruled, 100%. Achievement Unlocked - Criterion Elite. If I could put up with convincing people to work together I'd have done all of the challenges as well. I love those things but I just got so sick of kicking worthless players out. Want to see some crazy talk? Here it is.

BURNOUT PARADISE - SHAUNAGE'S GAME OF THE YEAR 2008

Too Human

Trash. I've talked about this at length. One of the worst games I have ever finished.

Rez HD

Playing this game with at least one controller acting as a trance vibrator, in this case strapped to my chest, is one of the weirdest gaming experiences of my life. I got stuck on about the third boss, which is a shame because I was really enjoying it.

Battlefield Bad Company

Another very serious candidate for GOTY. I believe I posted about this already.

SSBB

It's not a good game. At all. You people are insane. I want my money back, I got really excited for this one.

SSF2THD Remix

I still don't like Street Fighter. The 360 controller doesn't help.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

This was 2008? I think I wrote about it already, incase I didn't, I thought it was very good, significantly better than the original. Don't care about multiplayer.

God of War: Chains of Olympus

Played for about 10 seconds. I want a PSP now.

Ninja Gaiden 2

I think people were very unfair to this game. It's excellent. In all fairness I'm only 2 levels in. It's still harder than I'd like.

Infinite Undiscovery

I don't play many JRPGs and I finish even less than that. I'm right at the start of the second disk and apart from one idiotic part near the start having to charm animal into unlocking a door for me, I've really been enjoying it. I will finish this one. I like it a lot more than most people but then I only seem to like bad RPGs.

Fallout 3

I loved the intro, got out into what pretends to be a fully open world only to be routed through tunnels by very linear piles of garbage blocking paths in towns, pot really angry at how much of a hard time the fighting was giving me and gave up. I then played a bunch of side missions on a friend's near complete save file and absolutely loved it. I can't wait to start this properly. People have said this is Oblivion with guns as a negative. Those people are crazy because for one that's not a negative thing and for two that's not what the game is at all.

Tomb Raider Underworld

Here is how Tomb Raider has gone so far: 1 - excellent, near flawless, one of the best games of all time, 2-5 - huge disappointments, all completely missing the point of the first game, 6 - borderline unplayable, appalingly bad, 7-8 - an amazing return to form, some of my favourite 360 games. So here we come to Tomb Raider Underworld. Tomb Raider NINE. I'm over halfway through and I'm starting to form an opinion, which may change based on the story's end. The game isn't so much "get from A-B" as much as it is working with large area puzzles, which I suppose has always sort of been the case, but it's a lot more prominent this time around. The gameplay physics and controls have somehow gotten significantly worse that Legend and Anniversary, which is a real shame. I'm not enjoying it as much as those games, but it's a long way from being bad. Carrie 1000ed this. I probably won't, though I did the last two.

Metal Gear Solid 4

I played the first... maybe 30 minutes. I need desperately to finish 1, 2 and 3 to get into this.

Valkyria Chronicles

Looks very very nice - not my sort of game at all.

These are what I think were the best games of ‘08, of the games I have played.

Unbelievably Cute Sack Boy
Unbelievably Cute Sack Boy
LittleBigPlanet. I think this will have the longest legacy of any game this year. The simplicity, beautiful design, and endless scope of this platform game cum worldwide sandbox is just unlike any other game this year, or perhaps ever. The seamless integration online is so easy and pleasant, it also makes the game an MMO in style. No other game has ever been so wholeheartedly encouraging to the creative minds of its players - it’s almost an artistic medium on its own. It’s a thing of wonder and I will always love it.

Braid. Probably my favourite game of the year, simply because it has a kind of integrity - it is perfectly formed from the sum of its parts, not artificially extended or developed - it grows with its story and ends when there is nothing more to say. It is the best puzzler I have ever played bar none - it is ingenious on an entirely different scale to any other game I have ever played. Add in the expressive watercolour graphics, the charming score, and the platform mechanics, and you have a wonderful, original whole that suggests that games can and will go arthouse one day.

Left 4 Dead. I wouldn’t expect any less of Valve - they only make wonderfully original, utterly fresh games, and this is no different. The AI director gives a game experience that never gets tired, the co-op gameplay is like nothing before (with a nod to the zombie counter-strike mods), and as usual with Valve every last corner of the game is beautifully and intelligently designed for the perfect gameplay experience. Killing zombies rocks in co-op - a new universal truth!

Fable II. I don’t think there’s anything genuinely great about Fable II, but it is more than the sum of its parts. Easy to pick up, simple combat system, a deep world to explore, all the usual RPG tweaks, and just that feeling of control - the idea that whatever you do is changing your world. It’s something that games rarely manage to express, but with Fable II it forever presses those buttons that make you feel like an individual playing your own unique game in your own unique way. Humour, design, gameplay - all top notch and un-put-downable.

Geometry Wars 2. I’m surprised not to see this show up in more end-of-year lists, because you can be damn sure that everyone who knew about it was playing this game relentlessly when it came out. It has become the new standard for dual-joystick shooters, is hugely addictive, and I just can’t imagine a day when I won’t want to pick this up and give it a blast for 20 minutes. I don’t know why that sort of quality has gone out of style - this game absolutely rocks, and nobody who has ever played it would disagree.

World Of Goo. This is simply a wonderful puzzler, with cute and clear presentation and a game mechanic that just intrinsically works brilliantly. Like Braid, there’s a real feeling that this is a perfectly formed game - there is little familiarity from one screen to the next, and you always feel like the next challenge is fresh. An absolute joy to play.

Grand Theft Auto IV. Like the rest of the gaming world (it seems), I’ve gone through a sort of love-hate relationship with this game. At its best I felt it was the best game of all time, at its worst it felt like a pale shadow of the past excesses of GTA, but having distilled it for a few months now, I think I can say with some sense of certainty that Niko Bellic is the character we will remember from this year, and that his story in this game is still one of the most affecting and memorable in the history of the genre. Yes the shooting mechanic is still poor in this game, and the driving is okay at best, and the cityscape isn’t as pretty as Burnout Paradise, but somehow put together the game manages to be utterly compelling. I can’t think of a better satire of modern city life in any medium.

I DON'T THINK ARCADE GAMING AS EVER LOOKED MORE BEAUTIFUL!
Let's all be honest for a moment, they may call it arcade gaming but it's not exactly the same experience we all fell in love with those years ago when arcades were king. There was never a huge amount of arcades here in the British Isles compared to most countries but I still got to enjoy some great and classic games. So I've always been fond of the 'arcade' titled games hitting our current generation of consoles. Of course there as already been some classics from Geometry Wars to Uno but theres also been a fair share of crappy attempts to cash in on those looking for a injection of nostalgia but in High Definition. It's probably a little unfair to call them arcade games considering you play them in the comfort of your own bedroom and home. But most if not all Xbox LIVE and PSN arcade games were bred from the ashes of those classic games we played with friends and wasted so much money on back when we didn't need death bringing chainsaws on machine guns to keep us happy. I dream that maybe one day such titles as Geometry Wars 2 might be able to bring arcades back from the ashes, but I seriously doubt they will. But at least we still have great arcade games to look forward to and now we have Blitz Arcade's newest Multi-Directional Shooter 'PowerUp Forever' to enjoy.

BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE HIGH DEFINITION TELEVISION SCREEN!
For many gamers around the World, Arcades in themselves were representation of beauty, but did we all realise how beautiful those games were going to get back then. I don't think so, In an age when 2D was still showing it's best, we had no idea what the future would hold for us gamers eager to play the latest and greatest games. It's also pleasant to see so many modern arcade games sticking to a unique form of 2D graphics, or what's now known as 2.5D graphics. Which basically means a game set on a 2D platform but with 3D graphics, anyway that's what I think it means I may have described it a little incorrectly. But that's exactly what PowerUp Forever is. A 2.5D Multi-Directional Shooter featuring High Definition graphics for the modern day arcader. Theres been a good couple of multi-directional shooters hitting our consoles over the last few years, though none have been as good as the truly addictive Geometry Wars 2. But the simple amount of games following Geometry Wars lead shows that it's arcade gameplay that works and works well. PowerUp Forever is no different, but before we go into the actual gameplay let's talk a little about how the game looks and performs on screen. While playing yesterday I was thinking what game PowerUp Forever reminded me so much of, no not Geometry Wars but eventually I realised that it was infact Spore's 'Cell Stage' in which you play your creature in Cell Form. Let me explain, basically in Spore as you get bigger you start to bully (and when I mean bully I actually mean kill) the creatures that were only a short while ago bullying you. As you got larger you started to see other cells that were gigantic to you eariler on. That's exactly the same with PowerUp Forever, you start up small but as you 'power up' you start to easily kill those who were much bigger (and of course tougher) then you were earlier on.
Each new 'stage' as a stunning unique style to it, be it bright and colour to dark and dull.
Each new 'stage' as a stunning unique style to it, be it bright and colour to dark and dull.

The game is set up in stages, you are required to kill enough parasites in order to attract a stage or level boss in the form of a Guardian who willl build up rage and attack you. It is your job to kill the Guardian to obtain their specific ability or powerup which will either be an upgrade to an existing weapon or a brand new weapon all together. At the bottom of the screen you can see the rhythmatically sounding 'Guardian Rage Guage' in which gets filled when you attack and kill the parasites scattered throughout the stage. They are often found sucking up the energy of dead creatures to take back to a type of 'main base' so it's often a good idea to follow one of them and see where he heads off to and you'll probably find a good few more parasites to take down and anger the Guardian. It's a pattern the game follows for every stage and for some it will be repetitive, but the overall enjoyment found in finding out the next powerup is enough to keep you entertained. Not to mention how great the game looks.

PowerUp Forever as an odd sense of artistic style. Think Sci-Fi and bacteria meets nature and it blends all in to create one stunning arcade game that runs perfectly. The game almost as a smokey effect to each stage that although not ground breaking, is oddly pleasant and fascinating to watch. It's odd to explain but the screenshot to the right shows the smoke effect in action. It gives the game a free and flowing look to it that many current arcades titles lack. Each stage of Powerup Forever is differently visualized and the style can change drastically from dark and dull to bright and colourful. It's a pleasure to see and it helps make PowerUp Forever one of the best looking arcade games currently avaliable on the current gen systems. This change is also present in the creatures floating around the stage, though often the changes aren't huge though they are noticeable and they do often match with the new look of the newer stage.

The games User Interface is also clean and easy to use. It doesn't throw information at you with pop-up messages like some arcade shooters have of late. But it does give you the info that is important to the game, such as the weapon you are currently using, the energy left for that weapon, both your current score and high score, and then finally your health and the guardians rage amount. Speaking of the energy of weapons, all weapons except the standard plasma cannons require energy to use and of course that energy goes down with use. This is where the other creatures of the stage come into play, once killed or blown up it fills up your weapon energy bar a little bit more until your full of power ready to use your mix of weapons again. Of course the creatures and floating balls also carry points with them so if your looking to top that high score it's important to take as many down as possibe. As I said previously, the actual flow and process of each stage doesn't change so for many gamers the gameplay mechanics might be a little to repetitive for some. There is an enjoyment in finding out what powerup/upgrade are coming next for the gamer to enjoy using. Though saying that the games repetitiveness will destroy the overall experience for gamers looking for more variation in there gameplay,

POWER UP FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER AND THEN A LITTLE BIT MORE!
I have to admit that I can't be totally sure if the game is worthy of it's title, though I do suspect the game follows Geometry Wars in that it keeps the enemies flowing towards you until your eventually dead. But I honestly don't expect the game to keep providing you with new powerup or upgrades to existing weapons as that would simply be endless and to hard to program. So maybe the name is a little misleading, but I'll be honest and admit that I'm not the greatest arcade gamer out there and it can take me sometime to master all the little tricks these types of games have. I'm sure soon enough I will be able get to the so-called end and I'm quite interested to see how it works. But a gamer is only as good as his skill and I'm not the greatest out there so for now I'll have to stick with what I know. The powerups are unique though, even though many are just variations of what we have seen in past games there is a odd sort of joy in obtaining the newest one. Such as the laser for instance, it's a simple weapon but also one of the most visual. It actually reminded me a lot of weapons in Ikaruga in that once your laser as a target it fires off bullets of plasma which simply looks great. It's also a very usefull weapon against tougher guardians, but it's also a great representation of how visual the game can get. As I said, there are a good variation in weapons and the same can be said for upgrades, the upgreades are mostly as you'd expect. More damage and better speed but there also as enjoyable to obtain as the new weapons themselves.

The Guardian fights can be surprisingly thrilling battles.
The Guardian fights can be surprisingly thrilling battles.
The game controls like most Multi-Directional shooters avaliable on our current generation of consoles. You control your crafts movement with the left analog stick and fire in all directions with the right analog stick. We have seen it before, but it's a control scheme that still works well and is reasonably easy to master. It's also not hard on fingers and thumbs like the control schemes of classic arcade games could be back in the day. This also means that playing can also be quite a pleasant experience, if your like me then you probably hook your Ipod up and listen to your favourite music while playing. This means that playing PowerUp Forever can actually be a very carming experience and it's actually something a lot of good arcades do nowadays. They can be thrilling but there also simply fun and this game is no different. Going back to the controls for a second, one complaint that I do have is with weapon selection. As you start getting multiple weapons you are required to select which one you want to use. So to do so you use the LB and RB buttons on the Xbox 360 controller. Now this does it's job fine but it can be a clumsey way when getting the right weapon especially considering you can only select one weapon at a time. This means that in the heat of battle you may find yourself searching for the right weapon (which is indicated by a symbol) and find yourself killed while you do so. This could have been better mapped out on the controller.

PowerUp Forever handles well though and is free and easy to use. The controls respond well and it's easy enough to dodge enemies heading your way. Some of my main issues with the game actually come down to sound, it's not the best sounding arcade game out there partly due to poor sound effect choices. I don't usually moan about such things and as I said previously I do often play with my own music hammering my ears. But theres some odd sounding noises in PowerUp Forever. For instance when you craft hits a hard object and takes damage you get this weird metal tapping noise that is simply unpleasant to hear. I guess that in itself is a good reason to stay away from the solid objects in the game if death wasn't enough. But it is a terrible sound effect that makes me gringe when I hear it. Some weapon effects sound nice while others sound dull and a little to repetitive. For instance your standard plasma weapon as a dull and almost weak sound to it. I want to hear big impact sounds as I fire off my weapons, not some quiet dull effect which makes my weapons sound and feel weak. Ok, maybe I'm being a little harsh on it there as the same critism could be placed on Geometry Wars, but it would be nice to hear some better sound effects from time to time in current arcade games.

The games soundtrack isn't exactly breathtaking either, sometimes it's almost inaudable. PowerUp Forever does feature some catchy tunes in certain stages but for the most part it's a pretty dull affair. Maybe I'm simply expecting to much from a game that only there to please my arcade nostagia needs. But to many current arcade games are trying to play both modern and classic, but also try and offer modern hip music and fail misserably. I would have loved to see some catchy tunes in the style of 8-bit with a moderrn touch or something similar. Geometry Wars 2 had a much improved tune that was a pleasure to play over and it would have been nice to see the same in PowerUp Forever. Though the more I think about it, the more I do wonder if I'm simply asking to much from my arcade games nowadays. I've just become so use to hearing classical soundtracks in modern videogames that I start to think that every game should have some monks singing some beautiful tune. It's because of this issue that I'll happily stick to using my Ipod Touch and listen to my favourite tracks. It's a common technique that I know a lot of arcade gamers use to.

GEOMETRY WARS 2 VS POWERUP FOREVER..... LET WAR COMMENCE!
I have refered back to Geometry Wars 2 multiple times in this review, and for good reason with it being the best arcade game currently avaliable on any of the curent generation of  consoles. Almost every Xbox 360 owner as played Geometry Wars be it the original arcade version which hit when the console launched or the stunning sequel. So everyone is at least a little familar with how addictive the game could be. I spent many nights playing Geometry Wars 2 for a shocking amount of hours as it gameplay and modes suited the game perfectly, eagerly pushing me to play more. The newer game modes added in it's sequel were key to this and when we compare the longevity (a word I hate using) of both games you have to admit that Geometry Wars 2 still as a good lead over PowerUp Forever. That's not to say it doesn't have extra modes, you get the common arcade modes which is the actual heart of the game and (again borrowing from Geometry Wars 2) you can unlock extra modes once you meet a certain requirement. These extra modes include Guardian Rush, Survival, Defender and Overkill. From the ones I've been able to play at this point, I can confirm them to be pretty entertaining but they simply don't have that addictive feel to them that the other Geometry Wars 2 modes had and for that it's a little disappointing.

It's when comparing these two arcade games that many of PowerUp Forever's downfalls appear. It's a simple game that clearly borrows a lot from other arcade titles, but it's also limiting itself in key areas, it's as if the developers knew that this game wouldn't be able to compete as theres so much more that could have been done with some of the game modes. The lack of variation from stage to stage will also be a big issue for some gamers, it would have been nice for other alternative methods of attracting guardians into battle aswell. This would have helped the game feel less repetitive to those looking for depth and variation in their arcade games. But, I shall admit that the uniqueness of the stage settings and artistic style, not to mention how much fun the weapons and abilities can be. Make that repetition less of an issue for me as a gamer. But there will be those looking for a more deeper experience. Which is the better looking game is debatable, some will prefer the simplistic stylings of Geometry Wars 2 while some will fall in love with PowerUp Forever's unique artistic style and direction. I'm personally stuck in between, though I loved the simple yet beautiful graphical design of Geometry Wars 2 I also believe PowerUp Forever to be the best looking arcade game to date. It's definately the best looking multi-directional shooter avaliable in the genre. This is also helped by the fact that it plays aswell as any of it's competitors.

Maybe it's wrong for me to compare the two games, when looking at PowerUp Forever you can see a well built example of a arcade shooter at it's best. But it's also blindingly clear that it's in the shadow of Geometry Wars 2. It's a stunning looking arcade title that will be a pleasure to view by any arcade gamer out there. But more could have been done with what's done so well here in the first place, the stages are brilliant and visually different on screen but the gameplay doesn't change at all. It would have been great to see the gamer required to adjust his skill and ability to each different stage. It would have also been great to see maybe more lessons learnt from the original Geaometry Wars and it's sequel. Infact I do have to wonder if this is indeed just the entry for the series. Theres enough great things on offer here to make me wonder if we will see a sequel worthy to challenge Geometry Wars 2. Maybe it's a series just finding it's feet in the arcade world of console gaming and developers Blitz Arcade have created a fine first entry. But more lessons must be learnt before PowerUp Forever gets the full praise it already shows it potentially deserves. It won't be to everyones tastes, but it's at least worth a trial look if not a full purchase for 800 Microsoft Points. I'm not totally sure how much the game is going for on PSN but it'll be around the same price as the Xbox LIVE Version no doubt. If you had any interest or love for Geometry Wars, then I highly recommend you check this arcade title out now. Despite it's downfalls and issues, it's still one of the best arcade games to hit consoles this year.

PROS!

Added by KensterFox on Dec. 2, 2008

The staff members and moderators of Giant Bomb have been asked to post their top 10 games of 2008 to contribute to the upcoming feature on the subject. I will sort these later, but here they are, my top 10 games of the year, listed in order of release.

Burnout Paradise
Grand Theft Auto IV
Metal Gear Solid 4*
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4*
Geometry Wars Retro Evolved 2
Braid
Dead Space*
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2*
Left 4 Dead*

The entries with asterisks next to them are games that I have not played myself, and I am assigning a place on the list based only on media coverage of them.

1.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots

Arguably the greatest masterpiece of the Metal Gear franchise and Kojima's best game to date.

The final chapter in Solid Snake's epic story is very unlikely to be topped between now and the end of the year.

2.
Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV
As much of a leap forward for the series as GTA III was from the original 2D games.
GTA IV may have displeased some fans with its more realistic direction, but there
can be no argument that it is still an astounding game.

3.
LittleBigPlanet
LittleBigPlanet
In an era where every game seems to be dominated by space marines and violence
LittleBigPlanet has been a breath of fresh air. A gorgeous visual style, great old skool
platforming and its ground-breaking creation tools have made this a must-have for
every PlayStation 3 owner.

4.
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 2
Gears 2 presented a much more refined experience than the first game, while
maintaining everything that was so great first time around.

The campaign is much more enjoyable and the new additions to multiplayer,
especially Horde mode, mean that we're all going to be playing this for months
to come.

5.
Rock Band
Rock Band
Here in the UK, we're yet to see Rock Band 2 released (though it is out later this week).
For now though, we're more than happy to make do with the first game.

There's nothing quite like rocking out with your friends and Rock Band nails this
experience far better than any other game.

Weekly DLC also keeps players coming back for more.

6.
Burnout Paradise
Burnout Paradise
By borrowing Test Drive Unlimited's open-world model Criterion Games revolutionised
the Burnout franchise.

Frantic races, all new events, sublime online play and terrific crashes make it one of
the most adrenline-fuelled racers around. Add to this the copius amounts of free DLC
and you've also got one of the best value-for-money games of 2008.

7.
No More Heroes
No More Heroes
It hasn't been a great year for Wii software, but No More Heroes definitely stood out from
the crowd.

Suda-51's mad style of art and design has never been more obvious than this game, which
follows the story of an otaku who buys a Beam Katana (read: Lightsaber) in an online auction
and sets about becoming the world's greatest assassin, just to get a hot blonde chick into
bed with him.

If that last sentence didn't sell it to you, then I don't know what will!

8.
Mirror's Edge
Mirror's Edge
Battlefield developers Dice took the FPS handbook and tore it up when they set about making
this platformer. A truely unique visual style and incredible controls made for an enthralling
experience once you look beyond the occasional bit of trial and error.

9.
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved 2
The quality of downloadable games on XBLA and the PSN has improved dramatically this year
and Geo Wars 2 is certainly one of the stand-out titles.

No other game this year has a more engrossing "just one more try" effect on your gaming.

10.
FIFA 09
FIFA 09
Comfortably the best football game released for this generation of systems.

I imagine this list will change in the next few weeks, with games the likes of Left 4 Dead, Prince of Persia and Rock Band 2 (in the UK) still to be released.
