Before Gibs, There Were Bits
When designing Doom, one of the concepts would be to have spectacular deaths for enemies who took overwhelming damage. The term for this extreme state of disrepair was originally called " bits" as in "blown to bits," but this concept was eventually canonized as gibs by John Romero. True gibs as they are now understood, though, did not emerge until later. At the time, enemies in Doom simply had an alternate sprite animation for their destruction, which showed them being torn apart into a pile of bloody gore. This was still a single, dead sprite, though, and not a group of objects that separated from the target.
FACT: Guns are awesome.
FACT: Blowing people up is awesome.
CONCLUSION: Blowing people up with guns is awesome squared.
Gibs make people appreciate life, by making sure others can't. Such is the surreality of video game logic. A gun the size of a twinkie that can kill a man? Impossible. But turn him into bouncing red gibs? REALITY. Associated with uber-violent games such as Unreal Tournament and Quake, gibs are the result of a massive explosion, or in some cases, a less than massive explosion, resulting in someone becoming a sloppy red jigsaw puzzle of pain.
Your honour, a list of things that are awesome:
Gibs, (giblets) is what basically becomes of someone after they contact with an explosion. It can often be seen in games like Doom, Quake, Team Fortress 2 and many many more.
