Overview
Gold is a currency used in many games, particularly common in games set in medieval times. It is often thought of as the most basic type of currency.
A form of acquiring a lot of gold in games is called gold farming. This is usually when the player finds an area where enemies either drop valuable items or a lot of gold when they die.
Examples
In Warcraft III Reign of Chaos, if players need to build a ziggurat but have insufficient gold they must acquire 120G by sending acolytes to mine gold from a haunted mine.
In the Super Smash Bros. series, gold coins are used in certain minigames to unlock more trophies. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, if someone runs out of all of their lives in middle of the single player campaign, they can pay a certain amount of gold (depending on the difficulty setting) to gain another continue, this will put the player back where they left off with all their lives back.
In Resident Evil 4, players can spend gold coins to buy more weapons from the merchant, upgrade preexisting weapons, buy first aid sprays, and other items. Gold can be found by killing enemies or it can be acquired by selling items to the merchant.
