Gollum was once a hobbit who rediscovered the ring of power and was corrupted by it's evil

Description

Gollum is a character in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy books, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.  He was once a hobbit, but was corrupted by the Ring of Power that the dark lord Sauron once wore as his own.  As his obsession with the ring grew, Smeagol eventually lost his will to the evil it had harnessed and was transformed into the creature known as Gollum after years of the ring's burden taking a toll on his physical appearance as well as his sanity.

Origin

The creature Gollum first appears in The Hobbit and has the Ring of Power taken from him by a hobbit named Bilbo Baggins.  Bilbo by the end of the story is in possession of the ring and returns to his home in the Shire.

In the Fellowship of the Ring Gollum makes an appearance again as the Fellowship makes their way through the caves that Bilbo once had adventured in.  It is not known at this point, but Gollum eventually would play a key role in the story's plot.  Eventually Gollum regains his precious ring, but only before being killed in the depths of Mount Doom.

Appearances

Gollum appears in many of the games based on the Lord of the Rings films and books.  He is often an enemy to the play in games such as The Return of the King, but is a playable unit in the real time strategy games, Battle for Middle Earth I and II.
