Justin Calvert of gamespot.com gives Gram Turismo 5 an 8.0.

"This accessible but realistic driving simulation is both sublime and subpar."

The Good:

* Accessible and rewarding for newcomers and veterans alike
* Uncompromisingly realistic handling
* Loads of great cars to drive and varied courses to drive them on
* License tests are no longer mandatory
* Premium cars are incredibly detailed.

The Bad:

* Quality of visuals is wildly inconsistent
* Outdated and impractical online lobby system
* Too easy to win early races simply by entering in a powerful car.

Sounds like a 9.0 to me.

Sounds like an 8.8 to me.

#4 Posted by benpicko (2008 posts) -

I'm not going to complain about his review, seeing as I haven't played it, but if they are the only bad things then it sounds higher than an 8.

Still, good score.

That seems in line with what I have seen of the game.

Justin the Brit can do no wrong!

@benpicko: saying the graphics are jacked-up and the online lobbies are busted sounds like a big deal. putting things like "license tests are no longer mandatory", and "premium cars are incredibly detailed" in the "good" category is almost damning with faint praise.

11 out of 10 for me lol

Just kidding, couldn't give a shit about GT, or gamespot for that matter, but from what I've seen of the game they seem to be right on the mark.

Just got the game tonight and I've been playing for a bit. I'd HARDLY call this game accessible to newcomers.

Not saying I'm a newcomer but if I was I'd certainly be overwhelmed.

I'm still trying to find out how this game is getting such great reviews while anyone who watched the quick look can tell that it's garbage.  Regardless of the crappy menus, the gameplay looks so boring and realistic that I'd rather just go out for a drive in real life. Add on the lack of polish (no damage, YOUR CLOCK IS WRONG etc.) and you have a steaming pile of excrement.

#14 Posted by Skald (4367 posts) -

Well, I'm enjoying my time with it, so whatever.

#15 Posted by niamahai (1405 posts) -

soooooo Turn10's claim to the definite  racer of the decade is true?

#16 Posted by MaddProdigy (1041 posts) -

Sounds like an 8 review to me. Surprisingly well written for what amounts to a games tabloid BOOM, ZING, BA DUM BUM, roasted! No but seriously, I stopped caring what any site other than Giantbomb said about games around the time Gamespot fired this guy named Jeff Gerstmann for not supporting advertisers with a high game score. In fact, both Gamespot and IGN can review my nuts any day of the week.

#17 Posted by BeachThunder (11929 posts) -

Sounds like an 8.63 to me.

#18 Posted by RobotHamster (4171 posts) -

Sounds like a 9.98 to me.

I click the guys name and it says 505 error. He also has the Giantbomb logo as his name, and this is a really well written little mini review post. Do review sites create accounts and seed reviews on competing websites? Just wondering, whether this guy is or not, anyone heard of anything like that? Seems stupid to me.

That's bullshit I can't believe it got an X.X for [constructive criticism]. Here's obviously just a [console rival] fanboy and obviously enjoys [rival racing game] far more.

@aurahack: Uh oh. Sounds like someone's gotten an N4G overload!
#23 Edited by mordukai (7150 posts) -

I know Japanese developers have...difficulties...accepting this whole online gaming boom but is the online lobby system that bad?

Haven't they learned anything from MGO?

#24 Posted by aurahack (2270 posts) -
@PrivateIronTFU: Huh?
#25 Posted by PrivateIronTFU (3874 posts) -
@aurahack: n4g.com. The comment section of N4G is literally crawling with people who say things like you just did. Only they're not joking.
#26 Posted by aurahack (2270 posts) -
@PrivateIronTFU: Well that's unfortunate. It also reassures me that, like I decided two years ago, I still have no need for any other video game website. :/

The Camaro I just bought was tuned and bumped to almost 700HP. I'm fucking raping everyone in single player.

#30 Posted by SBYM (1219 posts) -

It didn't get a 10? Sounds like a certain reviewer was too stupid to set his clock and took out his completely unfounded anger on GT5's incredibly thoughtful reminders. Enjoy your money from Macro$haft, fanboy. Whatever, though. Review scores are completely worthless unless I agree with them, at which point I rejoice.

I like to take two copies of Gram Turismo and put chocolate and marshmallows between them, then heat it up and have me some snacky time. Smiley face; winky face.

I'm a real person, and I'm not an employee of Gamespot, just an ordinary member. The giant bomb logo under my name is my avatar. It's the sites default avatar if you haven't uploaded one of your own yet. BeachThunder is right, I copied the bullet points from the review.

The 500 error is weird, I cant even access my own profile.

I don't necessarily like Gamespot, but I do like Justin. I remember the few times I raced with him on the Forza Paint Union's race weekends. One day he lagged so much he was flying above everyone. I have a bunch of pictures of him hundreds of feet above everyone else. Good times.

On Topic: Bet Polyphony is pooping there pants right now. jk. It's funny that we can even consider Forza being as good as this game though considering everything that happened throughout development. At the end of the day I'm happy to have Forza, though!

Although the night modes in GT5 look awesome.

#33 Posted by yakov456 (1908 posts) -

He is right on about the online, this is the only problem I have with this game. Just entering a race is a tedious affair, and that is if you are lucky enough to have the right car.

Bold and underline to highlight silliness.

I am not a fan of driving simulators at all. I'm not going to buy GT5, but if the driving is "so boring and realistic" its probably done its job very well. That's why people love this series.
#36 Posted by zudthespud (3281 posts) -

As someone who spends most of his time playing boring, unrealistic and ugly racing simulators on the PC, this review sound like a 9.32463588765 to me.

#37 Posted by Ethan_Raiden (342 posts) -

You're all crazy, it's obviously an 8.4

#38 Posted by handlas (2679 posts) -

pssst....but seriously, this game deserves better than it has gotten from most sites.  The racing is 2nd to none; is that not what I buy a racing game for?

I only like Mr. Kevin Vanord over there myself.

I really can't understand why people whine when their favorite game gets a "bad" score. You enjoy it, so what the hell do you care if some reviewer gives it a "bad" score? And also, since when was 8.0 out of 10 a bad score? It's just like when the legion of idiots complained over Jeff's Twilight Princess review and that he "only gave it 8.8". Seriously? 8.8 out of 10 and you scream bloody murder? One of my favorite games of 2010 "only" got a 3 out of 5 from Jeff (Dead Rising 2), but did you see me bitch and moan all day long regarding his score? Reviews are opinions, and newsflash: people have different opinions.

Ugh, I probably need some coffee...

#41 Posted by FreakAche (2953 posts) -

Justin has an English accent. Anyone who complains about this review is just jealous that they will never be as classy as he is.

Depends if you talk about races or licenses, it can be really easy for some...or absurdly hard for others.

What do you expect from Gamespot.  They gave Brotherhood and 8.5.

#48 Posted by stinky (1548 posts) -

cuz if you like a game...you want the people who made it to receive the praise you feel they deserve.

Not hard to understand imo.

Should have been 8.1. This is why GS is terrible.
