i don't have the pic anymore, but last month i popped gt5 in for a quick race and had an update that took 7000 or so minutes.

#4 Posted by JJWeatherman (14485 posts) -

608 megabytes? That won't take too long.

Online
#5 Posted by StaticFalconar (4849 posts) -

how bad are your internet connections? downloading something from PSN is the same speed as downloading something from a website, but the only thing that sucks is you're forced to watch the download bar instead of doing something else during that time.

#6 Posted by PhilESkyline (770 posts) -

608MB is 1 of 4 downloads. Lord knows how large  the other 3 are. I have 2.5 MB download.

#7 Posted by LutonHatter (323 posts) -
@PhilESkyline: One is tiny the other two around the 500-600 mark IIRC

Hope the content is worth it.  Remember when entire games used to be 600 megs?

#12 Posted by Vinny_Says (5630 posts) -

yeah one time black ops had to update, my friend has good internet but we were not gonna wait 204 minutes....

#13 Posted by m1k3 (1322 posts) -

if i get slow downloads on PSN i just run a proxy server. usually takes the same amount of time i download stuff on my PC.

#14 Posted by warxsnake (2626 posts) -

I once popped uncharted 2 back into my ps3 to play some multiplayer. I didnt have to update anything, I felt lucky.

It did however take a solid 20 minutes to go from the main menu to the multiplayer menu. 20 minutes. My PS3's been off since then.

I get excited when I see updates. But now the PS3 just auto downloads updates while I sleep.

It doesn't matter if it is GT5 or Killzone 2, the infrastructure of the system is terrible and that needs to change.

Well if you don't want extra shit then don't let it update, just disconnect from the internet, simple.

Tell me more about this autodownload.

Do you just leave your PS3 on overnight and it downloads any available updates?

heh well its a feature of PS Plus. Sony's version of Xbox live gold. The PS3 will turn on at a designated time and check for any software updates and apply them.

Cool, I'm a PS+ member so I should start doing this. I've been wanting to play Burnout: Paradse lately but there's like 9 updates.
#23 Posted by Zidd (1832 posts) -
@Devil240Z: @EVO: I'm pretty sure it will only download for an hour a day though which is fine for most updates.

@EVO just enable auto download in system setting and you're good to go.

No matter what, when I turn my PS3 on I get something similar, maybe I should use the thing more often to avoid this?

#27 Edited by Marcsman (2876 posts) -
@EVO:
You have to subscribe to Plus to get it. And it is well worth it.
No you put in what time you want your PS3 to DL stuff at night, and it will do it by itself
No you do not have to leave the system on.

whats lame? free multiplayer gaming with the option to pay for icing on the cake features like auto updating and cloud saving?

Except when you get an error message saying you don't have the 5GB of space which PSN is trying to auto download! I need to check into it, but I would love for there to be an option for prioritizing or configuring what PS+ Auto download will do.  I don't care about getting an exclusive demo auto installed (especially as I haven't upgraded from my 80 GB drive yet).  I don't mind taking the time to go to the store and click on the icon for the demo.  I do care about getting patches pre-installed so I don't have to wait to download and install for games.  If I could only select to have those patches installed, I would be more content with the service.

i've found that the PS3 downloads updates really slowly

Yes, that.
What makes charging for multiplayer dirty, but charging for other features like this one fine?
Especially one's that improve the currently sub-par updating features of the PS3? The fact that you consider a quick and smooth system update "icing on the cake" is a little crazy to me - that should be core functionality.

The cloud save thing is fine in my books, and the free content pays for Plus on it's own but c'mon this auto-download solves what many consider to be a real problem with the PS3 that could use fixing. I'm guessing the next PS+ feature will be faster downloads - again something that I think should be fixed for everyone.

I'm not questioning the value of PS+, I'm questioning the decision to make every new improvement a PS+ only feature.
#34 Posted by Devil240Z (3054 posts) -
@railbird13: I had that problem once. But I deletes some crap and have been ok. But I need to get a bigger HDD. whats the biggest size the PS3 will take? I have a 320 in now.

@ProfessorEss: I guess I sort of agree with you but Sony has to get some cash on the side somehow. I imagine Microsoft makes a shit load of money from gold where Sony doesn't have a similar source of profit from a seemingly intangible product.
#35 Posted by SomeJerk (2971 posts) -

The PS3 updates as fast as everything else I connect to the internet, but I use ethernet rather than wifi. Is that the one reason why I always wonder what people are on about when they complain about 20 minutes to get new firmware?

#36 Posted by ProfessorEss (7123 posts) -
@Devil240Z: Yeah they definitely needed to do something, I'd be curious to know how PS+ is doing.

I'd subscribe if I wasn't already backlogged and limited in my gaming hours as it is (my XBL Gold may have lapsed too come to think of it).
#37 Posted by MHumphreys89 (703 posts) -

Just turned on the PSN+ Auto-Download feature, I forgot I just bought a year's worth of PSN+ for the Mortal Kombat demo, does it power itself down after it's updated?

#38 Posted by LutonHatter (323 posts) -
@Devil240Z:  PS3 takes a standard 2.5" sata drive I'm not sure if there is a limit on capacity, if there was one I would imagine it woud be 2TB and once they become widely availble the firmware could be modified by sony to fix that, but there is a restriction on physical size in that you can't fit a taller than 9.5mm drive in without cutting away at the case etc.  If you can find a 1TB drive short enough it would be a safe bet. If you wanted to go crazy you could use a desktop sized hard drive sitting out side your PS3 but you would need an adapter and a separate powersupply as the current draw of a full sized disk would be too much for the PS3.

Does that autodownload download game updates too? I thought it was just System Level stuff. Might have to get a Plus subscription...

Yup, it does everything.  Pre-selected demos (like Mortal Kombat), software updates for games, and system patches.  I usually have mine come on when I'm at work so I can come home and not have to worry about patching.

No, not FTW, steam has this thing where it updates without anything happening on my end, I turn on system and EVERYTHING updates.  That is what needs to happen.  Also, when you download a new game from the store, it needs to be the UPDATED version and not the 1.0 version.  Again, something from steam to eliminate downloading time.

And making it a PS+ item doesn't do anything except for make me not want a PS3 anymore.  It is assinine to charge me for something that should be there in the first place.  If sony wants to beat MS then they should do it, not become them.

Is PSN and XBL really so slow? On my PC an 11GB game downloads in less than an hour from Steam.

Except it isn't.

If can download a gigabyte in little over ten minutes on my PC (probably less) - to do the same on my PS3 would take a considerably larger amount of time.

@GetEveryone: Maybe it's a problem on your end. I get the exact same speed downloading from PSN as I do on my PC.
#46 Posted by GetEveryone (4454 posts) -
@Binman88: Yeah, to be fair my PSN has always been sketchy as hell.

I have 20MB d/l speeds, so there's no real reason why I shouldn't be getting that across the board.
#47 Posted by Binman88 (3679 posts) -
@GetEveryone: Try mucking about with some of the network settings. I had issues with PSN when I got my PS3 originally, and turning off the Media Server setting fixed it for me. Could be something arbitrary like that fudging up your connection.

That could be how your experience is, but I remember the amount of time it takes to download Mass Effect 2 on steam and PS3 (don't ask me why I bought both versions), were both really long. Yes the file sizes may have been a bit different, but the difference in time wasn't that much
#49 Edited by Devil240Z (3054 posts) -
@StaticFalconar: I rebought ME2 when it came out as a PSN download too.
