26-year-old Chirantan Patnaik of Mumbai, India is now the world record holder for the longest play session of Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto IV

ZeeNews reports Patnaik played GTA IV for over 40 hours straight, breaking the old record of 28 hours and 1 minute. Patnaik started playing at his house at 10 am on September 4 and ended at around 2 am on September 6.

Guinness World Records verified the record, telling reporters in London Patnaik completed the session in front of several independent observers.

Zapak.com, India's largest gaming portal, offered support for the new record holder.

"We have always believed in the potential of Indian gamers. Chirantan's success is a proud moment for the Indian gaming industry. This will encourage more youngsters to take gaming seriously," said Rohit Sharma, COO of Zapak Digital Entertainment.

Guinness says Patnaik was allowed one 10-minute break every hour. "But I took a total of four breaks during my entire game," he added.

As for what plans Patnaik has for the future, he said he wants to better cement his record by playing for 48 hours straight."

When did Guinness start recognizing video game-related records?

#3 Posted by funcmode (138 posts) -

Damn there's a Guinness World Record for that? They'll give one to anyone for anything these days.

Hell if I still had my copy of GTAIV I'd give 'em a call and play it for longer than that. Piece of cake.

Since quite a while. They've got a bunch of video game related records inside

@AjayRaz: But are they really taking records for amount of time someone has played individual games straight? I mean, I could go set the record for Shantae tomorrow, but would they put it in the book? It seems kind of ridiculous

My thoughts? This guy's life must be amazing.

#6 Posted by TheMustacheHero (6655 posts) -

Oh yeah playing a game for 40 hours is serious business.
I hate people like that, especially the ones who take pride in their country and not mankind as a whole, or gamers as a whole.
He basically said "Indian gamers are serious business, fuck everyone else"

#7 Posted by AjayRaz (12465 posts) -
@AgentJ: yeah, for games played straight. as ridiculous as it is, you have to admit it's amusing to read.

I've seen a guiness world records book ONLY for video games related shit at my school library.
That guy is insane, the people who say this is a good think are more insane

Wow.

Well? C'mon where's the statistics? Number of stars accrued? Number of hookers banged? Those numbers could be astronomical in a 40 hour time frame!

#11 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6999 posts) -

I'll go play Big Rigs to get my name in there if I have to.

they're pretty much acting like no one else can do it except for indian gamers after this achievement imo.

@mikeeegeee: agreed 100%! this is bullshit
or he probably just walked around on the streets for 40 hours .__.

There are two Guinness books that cover only video games. Guinness World Records - Gamer's Edition 2008 and 2009 respectively. Both are very interesting reads.

That's the kind of role model india needs :D

I think it is safe to say that that guy has way too much time on his hands.

#16 Posted by WilliamRLBaker (4779 posts) -

So taking gaming seriously means you put off every thing else? eating, food, bathroom...etc?

#17 Posted by MasturbatingBear (1781 posts) -

and why gta4? isnt this the kind of think more appropriate for an arcade game? do
smash t.v then we'll talk

He took breaks.  Which I would think would invalidate the record, but apparently not.

So, can I expect to see Jeff and Vinny with their Endurance Run of Persona 4 record in the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records?

Probably, if they contact Guinness and make them aware of it.

I thought it was only me who played videogames for hours straight. Don't think I could do 40 hours since it's likely I'll either get bored or tired but I've done about 24 hours numerous times on my PS2.

#22 Posted by Hitchenson (4682 posts) -

...That's such a dumb record to hold.

#23 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5289 posts) -
@Metal_Gear_Sunny: No amount of such torture would be worth getting in the books. Although what is the current record for longest play session for big rigs?
#24 Edited by Evilsbane (4697 posts) -
@Hailinel: When they started recognizing all the other stupid stuff they do (I am not saying gaming is stupid or shouldn't be in there but they have some odd things)

But really only 40 hours? That really does not seem like much I am sure it sucks after the first 24 hours but that doesn't seem crazy I was waiting for you to say he played it for 3 solid weeks, hell if I lose my job and friends maybe ill try for the record.

Holy shit can you imagine some of the hour counts for certain MMO players *shudder* untold amounts of not moving for weeks.

No human being alive could play a game for three weeks nonstop.  To do any activity for 40 solid hours is a test of endurance.

he took 10 min breaks each hour, which imo should of taken him out from getting the record (since he didn't really play it NONSTOP). playing a game for 3 weeks nonstop would just be stupid as hell
#30 Posted by Evilsbane (4697 posts) -
@Hailinel: I am sure its not only possible I am sure it has been done come on dude there is some sick people out there all you need is a mini fridge next to you and some diapers and you've a recipe for some horror story's, all it takes is just sheer willpower or someone with an addictive personality.
#31 Posted by slinky6 (567 posts) -

if you watch those documentaries about people that play classic arcade games, 40 hours seems like nothing.

#32 Posted by Siphillis (1297 posts) -

Pssh, this guy aint shit compared to those dead Korean WoW players.

Man, Alex Navarro is gonna be pissed when he here's that.
#34 Posted by GunstarRed (5401 posts) -

I dont know if it's because I play games for huuuuuge stretches at a time but 40 hours really doesn't seem all that impressive... if It was worth it (and it isn't) I would probably sign up to break some guiness world record... it seems pretty easy to do.
#35 Posted by super_machine (1931 posts) -

Who wants to bet 30 of those hours were spent running down pedestrians and stabbing hookers?

#36 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5289 posts) -
@super_machine: Is there any other way to play? ;)

speaking of personal records mines 9 hours and some change on cod:waw zombie mode. looking back now it seems like such a waste of time.
#39 Posted by Scooper (7881 posts) -

I like serious that quote reads when it's not even a record. I probably played World of Warcraft in my pants for 2 days strait at one point.

"I hope to do 48 hours!".
Amazing.

"This will encourage more youngsters to take gaming seriously," said Rohit Sharma"
For one this game is a strictly adult rating and anyways young people do take games seriously, it's the old people that don't. AND WHY WOULD YOUNG PEOPLE TAKE GAMES MORE SERIOUSLY BECAUSE SOME INDIAN DUDE PLAYED GTA FOR 2 DAYS!?!?

#40 Posted by Gmanall (1683 posts) -

I like how the country clams it is a victory for them.

#41 Posted by SJSchmidt93 (4897 posts) -

Call me crazy but that doesn't seem very long.

I've heard WoW horror stories that go way beyond that.

Probably the longest time I've played a game nonstop is maybe 10-12 hours.

#42 Posted by baconbits33 (1156 posts) -

Really? The record is 40 hours? Seriously? I've played for 35 hours straight on Battlefield Bad Company at one point... that is some major bullshit right there man....

Staying up for three weeks straight might in theory be possible, but mentally exhausting and also harmful to one's own health.  That level of sleep deprivation is incredibly dangerous.
