I let a five year old play this game

I was supposed to babysit this five year old kid just for a few minutes, and I asked if he wanted to play some xbox. He joyously replied yes, and looked through the games I had. Of all the games he pulled out GTA 4 and said "I want to play this game!" I said alright and let him put it on. I figured that shooting people up wasn't appropriate so I put the character in a vehicle, and I showed the kid how to drive. 5 seconds later he was mowing down civilians on the sidewalk, and ended up in a park where he kept mowing down the ragdolling NPCs. He stopped the car, turned around and looked at me with his big blue eyes and asked "are they dead?" While thinking about how bad of an idea this really was I answered ".. No, they can't die.." he looked at the screen for a couple of seconds... then looked back at me again and said "I think this game is for bigger boys"

I then put on Blur. Less violent. Now I need to find a way to score some good karma points.

Did he really say that last line? You lie!

I avoid children so I don't even know what a 5 year old is like and whether this is horrible or not..

Good to know that the 5 year old kid had better judgement than you.

No, it's true! It really surprised me.

They weren't dead? He's clearly not trying hard enough.

Great, now he thinks people won't die if he runs them over with a car.

You should probably keep him away from cars...

My father let me play Wolfenstein 3D when I was four.

Shoulda said no to GTA and put in Saints row instead.

Oh he picked it? Clearly there was no other recourse but to let him play it then.

Personally I don't think it's that big a deal, I remember my cousins who were 6 and 4 watching me playing zombie apocalypse and they older one said "I don't think we should be watching this" and I just said probably not. They better not blame me when they are unprepared for when the zombies come.

Most of you probably played M rated games at that age.

#15 Posted by TekZero (2692 posts) -

My daughter would call this a "scary game".

She's 4.

They didn't exist in 1979.

#21 Posted by NickBOTT (473 posts) -

Wow that's crazy!  I'm sure ur days of babysitting that kid are over if his parents found out.

#22 Posted by JustKamToo (728 posts) -

And that's bad because?

#23 Posted by mutha3 (4986 posts) -

Well, that was retarded.

#24 Posted by mnzy (2926 posts) -

That's a smart kid, I guess you're not related.

#25 Posted by TheDoorman (534 posts) -

Lol just wait till he goes for his roadtest ten years later then all hell will break loose. He'll be just driving down the sidewalk mowing down civilians.

In all fairness, you're supposed to be the one with better judgement and control.

But I'm glad the parents are doing their job right. 5 is still pretty young to feel the guilty pleasure in killing virtual people, but nevertheless, he stopped before he started enjoying it, so all is good.

I read a blog by this guy before who did the exact same thing and his son drove slowly and stopped at all the red lights and stuff, interesting.

Kids need to learn what happens when you run someone over at one point anyway.

He was just instilling good old fashion Nazi hate into you. It would be a bigger crime if he didn't let you play.

I let my 6 year old sister play the game. I only placed her in helicopters and boats, though, so that she wouldn't be able to run over civvies.

#36 Edited by Hitchenson (4682 posts) -

I was playing GTA III when I was like nine, Manhunt when I was in my first year of secondary school, Max Payne when I was eight and I've only violently killed a few people in my life. It doesn't mess you up at all, just depends on the kid.

Well, at least he didn't tell his parents about it, right?

Did you then proceed to watch Breaking Bad on DVD?

YOU BAD MAN

#41 Posted by ninjakiller (3405 posts) -

A proper response would have been "Yes, they're dead, everyone dies, even your mommy and daddy, and even YOU will die someday."

Actually I came clean when his father came back. I figured the kid would tell him at some point anyway. He just smiled at the story.

Yeah, I heard something like that too. Might have been a different story, but I remember the person talking about how the kid drove properly, wanted to put out fires, drive people in the taxi. Kids crazy, yo.

I played Duke Nukem when I was 5 and turned out fine! I only occasionally feel the need to go on a rampage.

#46 Posted by buzz_killington (3532 posts) -

Dude, my dad let me play Duke Nukem and Doom everyday when I was like four. And look how I turned out. Just fine.

#47 Posted by Pie (7117 posts) -

I say you should of punched him, that would knock that attitude out of him.

You're not a terrible person. I've let my cousins play Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater when they were around that age.

#50 Posted by zeppelinracer (49 posts) -

It's not that bad, my dad taught me how to play Duke Nukem 3D when I was two, and I turned out fine. Probably won't affect him.
