Overview

Grand Theft Auto: The Classics Collection is a videogame compilation consisting of three games from the popular Grand Theft Auto franchise. The compilation was released in April 2003 for PC and the Sony PlayStation and contains the original Grand Theft Auto, the London 1969 expansion pack, and the first game's true sequel, Grand Theft Auto 2.

Gameplay

All three games in The Classics Collection play very similarly, save for some minor game-specific differences outlined below. As with all instalments in the series, the games set you down in a fictional city where almost everything is open to you. Each city is filled with cars that can be stolen, pedestrians that can be slaughtered, and missions that must be completed. The aim the player must generally work towards is the accumulation of a certain amount of money. Money is earned by running errands for people, completing side-missions and generally committing crimes and causing mayhem. Once the player reaches the required amount of money, they may finish the level and move onto the next scenario or city.

Missions

Missions are the main means of earning money in the 2D GTA games. At any given moment, the player can accept a mission by visiting the relevant payphone and walking over it, assuming they are not already on a mission. While the pretext for each mission is different, most of the missions involve driving from point to point, picking up illegal goods, stealing cars and killing specific targets. Missions are often split into stages, and each stage of the mission will require that the player completes one of these tasks before moving on to the next. Upon completion of a mission, the player is rewarded with a sizeable sum of money. In addition, finishing missions successfully will boost the player's cash multiplier, enabling them to earn money at a much faster rate in future missions. For this reason, completing several missions in quick succession is often the fastest way to reach the required cash total to finish a level.

Criminal Activity

As the name would suggest, stealing cars is an important aspect of playing the Grand Theft Auto games, but it's not the only form of criminal activity you'll be involved in as you play. Given the open-world nature of the games, pretty much any illegal activity you can think of is possible. After stealing a car, it can be used to ram other vehicles off the road, or to run over the hordes of pedestrians that litter the streets. Each game features an arsenal of limited but varied weapons such as pistols, machine guns and rocket launchers, all of which can be used to gun down civilians and blow up passing cars. Criminal activity is something of a double-edged sword, though: while you'll earn cash for every illegal action you perform, you'll also run the risk of attracting the attention of the local police force. As in the 3D GTA games, an on-screen indicator dubbed a Wanted Level illustrates just how intent the cops are on taking you down.

GTA2 Differences

The original Grand Theft Auto set the foundation for the crime simulation (crim-sim) genre. Its expansion packs, both set at different times in 1960s London, offered a new city, some new missions and a new side of the road to drive on, but did nothing to change the formula. Grand Theft Auto 2, on the other hand, made some notable changes to gameplay. These changes are outlined below.
  • Gangs and Respect - GTA2 is the first game in the series to use gang rivalry not only as a story device, but also as a gameplay mechanic. Each of the game's three districts is home to three factions which the player is free to work for at any point, assuming the gang in question has enough respect for the player. Respect can be influenced for better or worse, and siding with one particular gang will usually affect all three in terms of respect. Increased respect means gangs will offer you more difficult (but more lucrative) missions, while low respect means a gang will become hostile towards you, and attempt to gun you down if you set foot in their territory.
  • Increased Arsenal - While GTA and its expansion packs only offered four different weapons, GTA2 offers several more, many of which would in future go on to become staples in the series. Alongside the traditional pistol, machine gun, rocket launcher and flamethrower are a shotgun, grenades and molotov cocktails, among others.
  • Saving Mid-Level- In the original GTA and its expansions, saving was only possible after finishing a level. Given the demanding nature of many of the completions targets (usually several million dollars), this meant targets had to be reached in one sitting, making it very difficult for players to finish levels. GTA2 introduced the safehouse concept to the series, offering the player somewhere to save their game mid-campaign to ensure no progress was lost.
