The fanmade map was pretty damn accurate

Are we certain this one is real? There's been so many mock-ups in the past few weeks that I'm a little wary.

Yes it is real. The strategy guide is in stores and Rockstar confirmed it.

#9 Posted by Kazona (3058 posts) -

Yes it's big, but only a small portion of it is actually city.

#10 Posted by SamStrife (1282 posts) -

@kazona: Though in fairness, that city is larger than Liberty city by about 1.5 times looking at it. There's gaps where the Liberty City map misses and there's none of all that bullshit water running through it.

#11 Posted by Yummylee (21204 posts) -

Man, that's... a lot more countryside and wilderness than I was expecting.

#12 Posted by Krullban (1021 posts) -

@mustachio: This specifically is where the map came from

#13 Posted by SlashDance (1801 posts) -

I still find it odd that their maps are always islands. I know it's the best way to avoid having to put invisible walls everywhere, but Los Angeles on an island feels really weird to me.

My lawd, the GTA IV comparison. It's bootyful.

edit - Three airports hasdghasdgasdg

#16 Posted by jimmyfenix (3811 posts) -

@slashdance: Bigger question is what happened to the Bridges to SF and LV from San andreas. Maybe they will explain in the game.

#17 Posted by Krullban (1021 posts) -

This gif shows the scale pretty well.

I still don't know how to post gifs so click it.

#18 Posted by Vanick (312 posts) -

If that Liberty City overlay is to scale that seems pretty crazy. I'm really excited to see just how much underwater space is explorable as well.

#19 Posted by Bane (383 posts) -

I put a few different maps into AutoCAD and scaled them to roughly the same size.

damn i can't wait

#21 Edited by RonGalaxy (2835 posts) -

It looks like there are a bunch of smaller settlements scattered around the woodsy areas. Not like that one chunk of city is the only civilization in the game

Also, I wish r★ would make a companion map app that interacted with the game. Imagine being able to use a tablet to set waypoints. It would be infinitely useful for side content

One more thing: the map is completely open for you to explore from the get go, but employs an assassins creed 3 type fog of war where you actually have to explore to open it up. Not sure if there's anything gameplay wise that fills out the map quicker. That's what some dudes said on ign when answering questions about the game

@bane: Can you throw Red Dead in there too?

#24 Posted by HerbieBug (4193 posts) -

Yay!

#25 Posted by Kazona (3058 posts) -

@samstrife: No argument here. And to be honest, thinking more about it, it reminds me of the vast countryside of San Andreas, which I loved driving around, except bigger and more... alive.

In summary: I am stoked! Looking forward to jacking a dirt bike and exploring the countryside.

It's so nice to get that excited/nervous feeling in my gut again from seeing stuff like this. As a kid it happened all the time, now it's rare.

Jim Sterling was just playing

That looks fucking amazing. Can't wait to explore all of that.

This game is really looking good. I can't wait to get my hands on it on the 17th. Looks like I'll have lots to explore.

This map leaves me... concerned. More than half is just green with simple roads.

The city part looks very small in comparison. Unless the world is absolutely huge that is.

Well, feel free to prove me wrong GTA5.

Wait a minute, your telling me this game can tell your friends what you been doing in GTA V such as going to the stripclub? Just great, now I have to convince my friend's I'm only there just for the missions.

Oh and Jim Sterling is a sexist perv!!!!

Look at @krullban's GIF. That map does NO justice to the games actual scale/detail.

Remember when we all heard skeletons by stevie wonder in the second GTA V trailer. MAN time flies.

#39 Posted by Captain_Insano (1522 posts) -

Will be great as long as there is meaningful stuff to do in those areas.

I've never been able to really get a sense of scale by looking at video game maps. That just looks like a small island. Seeing that actually makes me a little less excited. Even comparing it to San Andreas map makes it still feel oddly small. But I am sure it's not by any stretch. Man, I hope this game turns out well.

Im glad that there is more wilderness than city ..... I too liked to drive around in San Andreas through the highways and wild parts.

#44 Posted by Demoskinos (14517 posts) -

So basically the city will be the size of the GTA IV map while the rest of the map is nothing but wilderness filler? Ick. It be great if there was at least one other major suburban area.

#45 Posted by OfficeGamer (1087 posts) -

I'm still waiting for someone to show us Grove St. on that map!

I think this is the same case and the map of the earth having tiny land compared to all the water. Doesn't make the landmass small does it? :)

#46 Posted by MachoFantastico (4475 posts) -

And people have been moaning about the size of the map, seriously I thought Red Dead felt huge (yes I know it was mostly desert) but some people are never satisfied. Plus it's bigger than the original San Andreas apparently and that world was huge.

Have to admit, I'm damn excited about this game more than I've been for a game in a while. San Andreas was such a great game, though R* lost me after GTA 4 which I enjoyed but hated because of it's story and Nico Bellic.

#47 Posted by Stealthmaster86 (623 posts) -

I think people are upset how "small" the world is is because of how big the roads are. In the past GTA games there was at most 4 lanes, San Andreas comes to mind, but now it seems to double it. Those multilane roads could be the reason why people think it looks small. As long as it's packed with things to do, I don't mind. Just Cause 2 had a massive world, and yet there was nothing to do.

#48 Edited by Krullban (1021 posts) -

Unrelated. This is the downtown LA Skyline right now.

After I saw this, I could never look at this map the same way.
