Debuting in Banjo-Kazooie for the Nintendo 64, Gruntilda was shockingly reminded by her cauldron Dingpot that she was not the most beautiful damsel in the game. The title in fact belonged to Banjo's sister, Tooty. Outraged by the fact, Gruntilda rides her flying broomstick and captures Tooty. Her overall goal is to use a beauty-transfer machine to steal Tooty's beauty (which she manages to do in the game's Game Over screen.) Gruntilda hides in her lair, which is guarded by Note Doors and different worlds to collect Jiggys. Upon confronting Gruntilda atop her towering lair, Banjo and Kazooie and their allies cause her to fall off the tower and become buried underneath a boulder.
In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge for the Game Boy Advance (two months after the events of Banjo-Kazooie) Gruntilda's soul is placed inside a mechnical body. She also captures Kazooie to change the history of Banjo and Kazooie defeating her, though she is eventually defeated by the duo, leaving her body and soul still beneath the boulder she was buried under after Banjo-Kazooie.
Upon the beginning of Banjo-Tooie (two years after the events of Banjo-Kazooie), Gruntilda returns from the grave in a skeletal form by her sisters, Mingella and Blobbelda. She then uses the B.O.B. cannon to steal the life of Bottles the Mole and the king of the Jinjos, King Jingaling. Upon reaching the final battle, Gruntilda controls the Hag 1 drilling machine to defeat the duo, but is quickly defeated once again after her magic spell is dropped inside the machine. The machine explodes leaving Gruntilda only a skull (which the protagonist characters comically use as a kickball).
In Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Gruntilda renovates Spiral Mountain into a shopping district city. The Lord of Games is the master who determines whether Banjo and Kazooie or Gruntilda have the power to control Spiral Mountain. Gruntilda's appearance is her skull placed inside a jar with a mechnical body being controlled.
Gruntilda is known in Banjo-Kazooie to rhyme when speaking, though in Banjo-Tooie her sister Mingella considers her rhyming "annoying," with Gruntilda speaking normally throughout the rest of the game. Grunty also has a penchant for quiz shows, which are used to test the player in their knowledge of the Banjo-Kazooie series, or in some cases of Banjo-Kazooie, Gruntilda's disgusting and revolting rituals.
Gruntilda's family includes the thin Mingella, the rotund Blobbelda, and her good but deceased sister, Brentilda. Brentilda in Banjo-Kazooie offers information concerning Gruntilda to help the duo complete the Furnace of Fun quiz show.

Gruntilda is a witch whose one act of profitable villainy has turned into an obsession in restoring herself and defeating Banjo. She often speaks in rhymes and favors a combination of magic, machinery and minion power in battle.
