Introduction

Welcome to The Curse of Monkey Island guide by SuperMooseman. If you don't know, a walkthrough outlines everything you need to do to get the credits rolling at the end - this means what items you should pick up, what locations you should visit and so on. However, I will not be talking about other surprises that you may come across if you decide to play through without any aid. I recommended that you only refer to this walkthrough if you have tried every possibility you can think of (and then some) as I believe games are much more fun and rewarding if you discover how to solve puzzles by yourself. This walkthrough is geared towards the Mega-Monkey mode, but it can be used for the easier mode too - just ignore parts that don't make sense, such as having to pick up extra items. Don't forget you can use the Table of Contents on the right if you need to skip to a specific position in the game. Thanks, and enjoy the game!

Walkthrough

Part 1: The Demise of the Zombie Pirate LeChuck

Captain's log, Guybrush Threepwood
Captain's log, Guybrush Threepwood
Talk to the small pirate operating the cannon. You'll soon find out this is your old friend, Wally. Convince him he is no good as a pirate by commenting on his failure as a pirate so that he falls to the floor crying. Pick up the plastic hook which he dropped, and then pick up the ramrod on the back wall. Use the cannon and click to fire and take out the four boats filled with the undead skeletons. Lean out the window and combine the plastic hook with the ramrod to make a gaff. Use the gaff to pick up the floating debris in the water. Go back inside.

Use the cutlass you just obtained from the debris to cut the cannon restraint rope. Now use the cannon to fire it. The force of the cannon backfires Guybrush into the treasure room, and causes the ship to turn upside down. Pick up the bag (to the left of the LeChuck portrait), and then pick up the big diamond ring underneath. Use the ring on the porthole.

Part 2: The Curse Gets Worse

Pick up the glowing ember on the beach floor. Go to the far left, following the big sign, and you will be taken to a map. Everywhere is called '?' until you visit it. Click on the boat on the swamp (to the left of the fort). Try to enter the wrecked ship and you'll be stopped by Murray. Finish the conversation with him and proceed to the ship once more.

Pick up the pin from the voodoo doll on the floor, and then pick up the paste beside it. Use the bag of nickels from your inventory with the gumball machine. Guybrush will take the pack of gum automatically. Pull the alligator tongue and the Voodoo Lady will appear. Talk to her and explain about the curse placed on Elaine from the ring. She asks where you hid her, and Guybrush runs back to the beach to check on her, only to see a pirate ship sailing away.

Guybrush returns to the Voodoo Lady and she explains that the ring must be replaced with one of equal or greater value. Cover all conversation topics with her and discover that you will need a map to Blood Island, a seaworthy ship and an experienced crew. Leave the Voodoo Lady and return to the map screen.

The town of Puerto Pollo
The town of Puerto Pollo
Go to the built up area, above the fort. This is Puerto Pollo. Enter the back door of the theatre, the big building in the centre with a clock tower. Examine the pirate coat hanging up, then pick up the dandruff on the top of it, which Guybrush will then realise is actually lice. Open the coat pocket and pick up the glove. Pick up the magic wand on the table and then use it on the magic hat. Pick up the book that appears in it. Leave the theatre and go to the Barbery Coast, the hairdressers on the bottom right.

When the barber puts down the comb, quickly put the lice on it before he picks it up again. This will cause him to throw out Captain Rottingham. Talk to the pirate barber, Haggis, and tell him you want a haircut. Use the handle on the side of the chair. Pick up the paperweight holding down the book. Use the handle on the side of the chair three times until it doesn't go any higher, and grab the scissors from the ceiling. Haggis returns, and Guybrush gets up. Talk to the salty pirate whose name is revealed to be Cuthroat Bill. Stop talking and push him. He starts choking, so push him again. Pick up the jawbreaker that he split out which landed on the floor. Leave the Barbery Coast.

Walk to the far left of the screen and over the bridge, near the boy with the lemonade stand. Use the scissors with the mysterious flowers in the walkway. Now use the scissors with the undergrowth which was behind the flowers. Walk towards all the stuff lying on the floor and Guybrush will be eaten by a snake. Pick up the Faberge egg inside the snake, the vacuum cleaner attachments and lots-o-stuff. In your inventory, combine the ipecac flower with the pancake syrup. Use the syrup of ipecac with the snake's head and he'll throw you out into quicksand.

Pick up a reed and a thorn from the thorny plant. In your inventory, combine the paperweight with the helium balloons. Blow the floating balloons. Open your inventory again and combine the thorn with the hollow reed. Use the pea shooter on the floating balloon. Guybrush automatically escapes the sand using the rope and ends up on a dark shore. Leave by exiting on the right.

Go back to Puertro Pollo. Enter through the open door on the building to the right of the walkthrough Guybrush came from. This is Blondebeard's restaurant, of which you have a reservation for from the snake. Tell Blondebeard this and he'll welcome you in. Pick up a tasty, buttery biscuit from the barrel on the right and eat it. You'll find it is full of maggots, which Blondebeard explains is for flavour. Use the maggots with the gross chicken on the table. Pick up the clubcard inside the bones. Push the quiet patron at the table and pick up the serrated breadknife from his back. Pick up the pie pan and the biscuit cutter from the ledge on the left.

Give the jawbreaker to Captain Blondebeard and it'll loosen his gold tooth. Use the pack of gum on him and he'll proceed to blow bubbles. When he does, pop it using the pin in your inventory. Pick up the gold tooth that fell to the floor. You can't leave with it in plain sight though, so chew a pack of gum for yourself. Then combine the gold tooth with the chewed gum. Now inhale the helium balloon and chew the tooth in gum. The bubble with the tooth inside will float out the window. Leave the restaurant and use the pie pan with the mudpuddle under the drainpipe. Guybrush will discover the gold tooth.

Walk across the bridge and go through the arch to a field. Walk up the raise of land to the grassy knoll. Use the serrated breadknife with the sawhorse holding the key of rum. The keg rolls and hits a tree, causing some rum to leak out. Use the ember on a stick from your inventory with the trail of rum. The tree will blow up and create a stack of cabers.

Banjo duel with Edward
Banjo duel with Edward
Go back to the Barbery Coast. Talk to Cutthroat Bill and then when you can, ask him if he wants to go back to pirating. He says you could never find gold, and to come back to him when you've found some. End the conversation and show him the gold tooth. He'll agree to join your crew. Talk to Haggis and ask him to join your crew. Keep talking, and you'll end up taking part in a caber toss and winning as Guybrush uses the rubber tree he blew up earlier. Now talk to the Daper Pirate and ask him to join your crew. He says he'll join if you beat him in a gentlemen's duel. End the conversation and use the glove in your inventory on him. On the Field of Honour, close the middle box's lid and use the banjo. Edward plays his banjo and pauses every so often to strum a string. Remember what he strums and copy it exactly. When he starts playing the banjo over his head, use the gun pile and pick up a pistol. Shoot his banjo when he plays it infront of him. He will join your crew. Leave the Barbery Coast and watch the cutscene.

Return to the field. Use the biscuit cutter on the rubber tree next to the one you blew up. Leave the field and then town and go to Danjer Cove. Combine the paste with the rubber plug in your inventory. Use the sticky rubber plug on the boat. Now use the boat and row to the pirate ship. Use the serrated breadknife with the plank and climb aboard the ship. Talk to Mr. Fossey and he'll tar and feather you. Return to Blondebeard's restaurant in Puetro Pollo.

He will mistake you for El Pollo Diablo and will hit you on the head with a pan. You'll end up in the captain's room on The Sea Cucumber. Use the book in your inventory with LeChimp. Guybrush will imitate him and Mr. Fossey leaves. Guybrush jumps out and picks up the map. Open the porthole and climb out.

Go to Puetro Pollo and in the back door of the theatre. Go up the stairs and you'll be behind the cameras and a control panel. Pull the handle once and press the red buttons in the order explained on the treasure map in your inventory. Each direction corresponds to a button - for example, SouthEast is the bottom right; NorthWest is the top left. If it says "two paces" then you must press that button twice. When you've followed the directions, the lights will mark an X on the stage where Elaine is buried. Guybrush automatically goes downstairs and the stage performance commences. Use the chicken grease in your inventory on the cannon balls in the trunk on the left. The act finishes, so go right to go the stage. Pick up the shovel and Guybrush will dig Elaine out and put her in the crow's nest. Leave the ship and watch the cutscene. Use the rowboat to return to the beach, then exit right to view the map.

Go to the beach on the upper right side of the island. This is the Brimstone Beach Club. Give the cabana boy the club card from your inventory. Pick up a towel and use it with the ice bucket. Use the wet towel with the cabana boy to whip him, and he'll run off. Pick up the cooking oil on the counter, then pick up two more towels. Dip them both in the ice bucket. Go up to the beach and try to walk across. You'll find the sand is too hot for you to do so. Use the wet towels with the hot sand to create a path for you to walk across. Be quick or they will burn up and you'll have to wet more towels.

Brimstone Beach Club
Brimstone Beach Club
Pick up the mug on the sunbathing man's stomach. Open the gate behind him and walk through. Go back to Puerto Pollo, to the lemonade stand on the far left of the island. Talk to the small pirate and learn about his bottomless mug policy after buying some lemonade. Switch his bottomless mug with the one you just picked up. Talk to Kenny again and buy some more lemonade. When he runs off, pick up the pitcher and use it on the dye vats to the right of the stand.

Return to the sunbathing man. Give him the bottomless mug you got from Kenny's. Use the pitcher with the red dye on the bottomless mug. The dye turns his skin pink and he thinks he is going to burn, so he quickly turns over to reveal the map of Blood Island on his back. Use the cooking oil with the map, then pick it up. Leave the beach and watch the cutscene.

Part 3: Three Sheets to the Wind

Captain Rottingham will board your ship, explain Insult Swordfighting, and then take your map for Blood Island. Your crew will then start singing a song. Select any lines until you can say "We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange", at which point the song will end as they cannot rhyme it. Haggis will then ask you what kind of captain you are, in other words the difficulty of the ship battles.

Examine the navigational chart on the table. Click on a ship to enter the combat. Left click to move and right click to fire your cannons. When you've beaten it, Guybrush will board the ship and engage in Insult Swordfighting. You will only know a few insults and their comebacks to start off with, so don't worry if you lose, just carry on fighting them over and over. After you've stolen some treasure, you can return to the port of Puerto Pollo (top left of the map) and upgrade your cannons from Kennie's new stall. Repeat this process until you have enough insult knowledge and cannon power to beat Rene Rottingham. A list of insults and comebacks can be found below.

Part 4: The Bartender, the Thieves, his Aunt, and her Lover

Pick up the bottle in the sand. Leave the shipwreck to the left and you'll be taken to the island map. As before on Puerto Pollo, most locations are labelled with a question mark. Visit the building in the middle. This is the Goodsoup hotel. Enter the building and pick up the cushion from the leftmost bar stool. Talk to the bartender and he'll tell you he has a terrible hangover. Pick up the recipe book on the bar and then examine it. It reads that to cure a hang over you need an egg, a pepper and hair from the dog that bit 'ya. Leave the hotel and go back to the map.

The windmill
The windmill
Go to the location on the far left of the island, the windmill. Once there, pick up the pepper which is to the right side of the windmill. Return to the map.

Go to the cemetery, found below and to the left of the hotel. Walk past the crypts until you come out next to a small shack. Pick up the mallet and chisel infront of the carved tombstone. Give the half-eaten maggoty biscuit from your inventory to the old dog. He will bite you, so now pick up some smelly dog hair. Leave the cemetery and to the map.

For the final ingredient, the egg, go to the beach near the shipwreck. Use the cushion with the rocks, then use the mallet with the rubber tree. The egg will fall down and Guybrush will pick it up along with the cushion. Leave and return to the inside of the hotel.

Give the pepper, smelly dog hair and egg to the bartender in turn. He'll mix up and dose and spring back into life, and will then give the rest to you. Ask for a drink, and order a big, fruity drink with an umbrella in it. Guybrush will automatically pick up the umbrella. Drink the drink, then go open the door at the back of the room. Pick up the refrigerator magnet, and then use the chisel with the wheel o' cheese to take a chunk. Return to the bartender and order another drink. Use the chisel with the Head-B-Clear to open it, then pour some into the drink. Drink the spiked drink and it will be assumed Guybrush has died.

Use the chisel with the coffin that Guybrush is in (bottom right). Now use the chisel on the coffin in the middle to let Stan out. Pick up the coffin nails that border the outside of the coffin Guybrush was in. Leave the crypt and return to the hotel. Walk upstairs and open the door on the left. Guybrush will enter. Use the mallet with the nail hanging out of the wall to push it in. Open the door again to leave, then pick up the portrait and nail from the floor. Use the laminated business card that Stan gave you to unlock the door on the right. Open the door and walk in. Pull down the bed from the wall, then use the coffin nails with the bed, and then use the nail you just picked up with the bed. Pick up the book from on top of the skeleton. Go back downstairs.

Talk to the bartender about everything you can to learn about the Goodsoup family history. Ask him why you weren't burried with Minnie Goodsoup, and then assure him that you are a member of his family. Pick any name you want. End the conversation and go back upstairs. Use the portrait with the door on the left, then enter the room. Look through the porthole, and the bartender will see you and mistake you for a family member. Open the door and go back downstairs. Talk to Goodsoup, the bartender, and ask him if you look just like a Goodsoup. He'll agree that you do bear resembalance, and then continue by telling him you could talk about the family history all day. Order another drink, then use the Head-B-Clear with it. Drink the spiked drink.

Guybrush will emerge from the coffin. Walk to the left and talk to the ghost bride. Cover all topics to learn about her history. Stop talking and walk to the left. Pick up the crowbar on top of the coffin, then walk around it. Murray will fall down to try and scare you. Pick him up, then look through the crack in the wall. Open your inventory and combine the skeleton arm with the paste. Use the skeleton arm with the lantern on the table. Place the lantern on the coffin lid, then use Murray with the lantern. He will "do his stuff", and Mort will open the crypt. Leave and return to the hotel.

Stan's new business location
Stan's new business location
Enter the back door and pick up the death certificate infront of the wheel o' cheese. Go to Stan in the cemetery. Talk to him and tell him you want to buy his insurance. Offer him the authentic pirate tooth to cover the costs. Give him the certificate, and in return he'll give you the insurance money. Go to the island map.

Go to the strange lights near the volcano. Pick up the measuring cup from the small table. Leave the village and go to the beach. Use the measuring cup with the seawater. Open your inventory and bite the bottle to take out the cork. Combine the pin with the refrigerator magnet, then use the pin with the cork. Finally use the cork with the measuring cup, and you'll have a compass.

Return to the hotel and pick up the mirror to the left of Goodsoup. Put the face you cut out from the portrait earlier into the mirror frame. Pick up the empty jar from the side of the counter. Talk to the fortune teller and get her to tell your fortune. Pick up the tarot card she places on the table. Get her to tell your fortune four more times until you have five cards in total. Go upstairs and back into the room with the skeleton on the bed. Use the crowbar with the boarded hole, then use the crowbar with the bed. After a small cutscene, Guybrush will enter the crypt. Pick up the engagement band on the floor, then leave the crypt and watch another cutscene. Leave the cemetery and to the island map.

Go to the windmill. Use your umbrella with the windmill blades. Use the empty jar with the barrel to fill it with sugar water. Get down from the windmill and return to the map.

Visit the small clearing to the left of the shipwreck to visit Elaine. Use the jar of water with the stump, and all the fireflies will flock into it. Open your inventory and use the chisel with the jar lid to poke holes in it. Now put the jar lid on top of the jar with the fireflies in. Guybrush will automatically pick up the jar. Leave the clearing to go back to the map.

Visit the final '?' on the map, the lighthouse at the front. Use the mirror in your inventory with the one in the lighthouse. Put your lantern on the lantern post and the lighthouse will start working again.

Return to the beach and you'll see a mysterious figure sitting in a boat. Talk to him, and he'll tell you he is the Lost Welshman, the ferryman between Blood and Skull Island. Ask for a ride out to Skull Island, and Guybrush will give him the compass that you made earlier. He will take you to Skull Island.

Talk to the winch operator and he'll lower you down to the smuggler's cave. When Guybrush starts falling, look in your inventory and use the umbrella. If you're not quick enough then you can go back to the cliff top and try again. When inside the smugger's cave, tell them you have so much money it's almost embarrassing. Guybrush will then tell you he wants the diamond. Tell him you can make a deal and you'll play poker with them. When they are looking at their cards, give the five tarot cards to King Andre. Guybrush is able to escape after the candle is blown out.

Leave the beach and watch the cutscene. Go to the shipwreck. Try to pick up the slippery greasy hand lotion next to Haggis. He wont let you pick it up, so talk to him about the lotion. He explains that he needs something similiar to tar, and would give you the whole bottle of lotion if you find something like it. Exit to the left.

The Cannibal's volcano
The Cannibal's volcano
Go to the village near the volcano. Pick up the block of tofu from the long table, and the auger from the small table. Combine these two items in your inventory to create a mask. Use the tofu mask and walk up the path to the volcano. Talk to the islander and he'll take you to the sacrifice. Use the un-melted hunk of nacho cheese with the massive seething cauldron (the lava) and the volcano will erupt.

Return to the Goodsoup hotel, but do not enter. Instead, walk across to the right and use the rest of your un-melted hunk of nacho cheese with the cooking pot sitting on the barbecue. Pick up the cooking pot and Guybrush will drag it down to Haggis. In exchange, you can now pick up the lotion.

Go to Elaine. Open your inventory and use the the enormous diamond with the engagement ring. Now use the slippery greasy hand lotion on the cursed ring on Elaine's finger. Pull the cursed diamond ring and it will explode. Now use the completed diamond ring from your inventory with Elaine's left ring finger. Watch the cutscene of her springing back to life.

Part 5: Kiss of the Spider Monkey

Talk to LeChuck as much as you want, and then select 'I've had enough of your evil stories! Let's get this over with!' when the option becomes available, then choose a sentence to ignore LeChuck's stories. Since Guybrush is acting like a child, he'll make you become one to put you in the mood.

Open the door of the cart and Guybrush will walk into the carnival. Talk to Dinghy Dog and ask how you can win a fabulous prize. Ask him to guess your age, then pick the anchor as your prize and pick it up. Now push Dingy Dog six times until he bites you, and you'll get some of his hair.

Look in your inventory and combine the pie pan with the bottle. Then put the anchor you just won in the fake pie. Use the heavy fake pie with the stack of meringue pies next to Wharf Rat and his cannon. Open the gate and then look through the hole. Wharf Rat will fire a pie at you.

Walk over to the Snowcone stall on the right and pick up the pepper mill on it. Talk to the soda jerk and order a snowcone. Use the meringue pie, Dingy Dog hair and the pepper mill with the snowcone in turn. Eat the disgusting snowcone and Guybrush will turn back into an adult.

Part 6: Guybrush Kicks Butt Once Again

Jump out of the ride at the Monkey Island scene (with the three-headed monkey) and pick up the fallen rope. Jump back into the cart when it comes around.

Jump out of the ride at the pirate scene (on the ship) and pick up the keg o' rum. Jump back into the cart when it comes around.

The Carnival of the Damned
The Carnival of the Damned
Jump out of the ride at the torture scene (with Wally hanging) and open the lantern. Blow out the flask o' oil and then pick it up. Jump back into the cart when it comes around.

Jump out of the ride at the snow scene and walk up to the Dynamo-Monkelectirc Giant Snow Monkey. Place the keg o' rum under his arm. Open your inventory and combine the fallen rope with the flask o' oil. Walk back down and wait for LeChuck to arrive. When he does, and is about to set you on fire, quickly open your inventory and use the pepper mill on him. He'll sneeze and set alight to rope, causing him to buried under piles of ice and snow.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have just finished The Curse of Monkey Island!

Feedback

I would very much appreciate your valuable feedback on this walkthrough. It would be really neat to receive a message from someone who was stuck in the game and used my guide to help them along the way, especially since I have put many of my valuable hours into making this just for you! Of course, I am in no means perfect. Although I have checked this walkthrough over and over to make sure that everything in it is correct, everyone is subjective to human error.
