Opinions: Pay for new Bag or Bank Space?

#1 Posted by KillerClaw (68 posts) -

Just was wondering what your opinions would be about what is a better use of gems, a bag space or a bank tab?

Lets look at the facts:

A new bag slot costs 400 gems. The largest bag currently in the game is 20 slot. In order to make it, you need a superior rune of holding that can only be bought from a vendor for 10g. This means creates a 10g minimum for player trades. Along with the rune, it requires 10 of the highest level crafting materials (10 Orichalcum Ingots, 10 Cured Hardened Leather Squares, or 10 Bolts of Gossamer). Also, keep in mind that the bag slot is per-character only. On the other hand, it can be accessed anywhere. You can only purchase 2 for a total of 7 bag slots. With only 5 character slots to start with that's 200 potential extra space without purchasing more characters slots.

A new bank tab expansion costs 600 gems. Its gives you 30 more bank slots. It is also accessible to all of your characters. You need to pay gems for a mobile banker to access it anywhere or be restricted to the bankers for access. You are limited to 7 extra tabs which means 210 extra space possible for an account.

Quick version:

Bag Slot

+ Storage isn't essentially split between characters

+ Items can be accessed anywhere without spending more gems

+ More potential storage if more characters slots are bought

- Big gold investment (10g min / bag) to maximize gem investment

- Other characters on account can't access it

- Can only add 200 slots without buying more characters

Bank Tab

+ All characters on account can access it

+ No gold investment necessary

- Essentially shared space between characters

- Need to spend gems to access it anywhere (Mobile banker)

- Capped at 240 more spaces per account

So, how will you spend your gems???

Since I'm lvl 60 (and bought the final skill book), I'm frequently converting ingame gold into gems. Already got a bankspace for 600 gems, and currently have 800 gems saved up. Torn between minis, a further bank slot, or getting a character slot.

With how I can break down and deposit most wares in the field, I'm totally fine with the bag space - and I currently only use 12-slot bags. Once upgraded to 20-slot bags, bag space will be a non-issue if I ever saw one.

So definitely get banking slots. Especially if you plan on collecting unique armor and weapon skins. I'm likely going to alternate my gem purchases between banking slots and character slots, until I've enough slots to roll a character for each class - by then I'll have banking space out the wazoo.

If I'm feeling fancy, I might spend 2000 gems on the Digital Deluxe upgrade.

The quoting is weird on the mobile site...

@seppli I also am going to try and buy the DDU with in game gold/gems, just because I can. I am going to try and buy everything from the trading Post that way.

I think buying space first would be the way to go. If only because it is accessible across all your characters.

If you are a cook. Bank slots is a must.

Well, the thing with cooking is, more bag space means that you can use more ingredients at once for discovery. And since you can only discover from your bags, the bank space is irrelevant since you might as well store the food-ingredient hybrids in your own bags.

So I had 800 gems itching in my pocket. Instead of getting a character slot, I caved for a pack of minis (stupid really, because all the ones I want are dirt cheap on sale in the trading post). Anyways - ran into the problem with minis being collectibles, and consequently are being sent to the collection everytime I hit the 'store all collectibles' button, so I bought an extra bag slot to equip some 'safe storage' for my minis of choice (really love using a vanity pet mirroring my 'real' pet - an old WoW-hunter habit). From now on though, I swear it *fingers crossed*, only character slots and banking space for me.

They're in the process of allowing discovery from the bank/collectibles tab. It was in their patch notes from yesterday, when they changed it so that you could craft from the bank/collectibles tab.

@KillerClaw: I dont really agree. Just because I made a 20 piles of salt and pepper/ cinnamon and sugar/balls of dough doesn't mean I want to carry them with me in every adventure that I go on or destroy them. I also don't want to burn them in meaningless ways just to free space.

Bank Slots are more valuable as it's shared by all of your characters on the account.

Character slots > Bank slots > Bag slots, in terms of coin -> slots value. Some people can't stand making mules, although if GW2 is anything like GW1 with character birthday presents you should probably have all your slots filled with idle/semi-active characters anyways.

I already have all of my character slots filled up from when I reserved names as launch. But, yea, if they allow discovery from the bank / collections tab, it will make the cooking argument irrelevant to bag slots. its just hard to keep up with the patch notes when their forums are so unreliable.

Bank space. Bank space. Bank space!

For me, since I plan to play several different characters (and love throwing all sorts of goodies in the bank), I see bank space is entirely too valuable. I'm at 15 slot bags right now, and I've had zero issues with my inventory space. I honestly can't see myself investing 10g+ on new bags when that can be converted to gems and unlock all sorts of bank slots for all my characters.
