Guitar Hero 5

Game » consists of 13 releases. First released on Sep 01, 2009

The fifth game in the core Guitar Hero franchise, and the third in the series from Activision and Neversoft. Though the game goes by the Guitar Hero moniker, it features full-band gameplay like its predecessor, Guitar Hero World Tour.

I just happened to be on the Foo Fighters site, when I saw a nifty little post.

This is a statement regarding Nirvana, Guitar Hero and the likeness of the late Kurt Cobain.

We want people to know that we are dismayed and very disappointed in the way a facsimile of Kurt is used in the Guitar Hero game. The name and likeness of Kurt Cobain are the sole property of his estate – we have no control whatsoever in that area.

While we were aware of Kurt’s image being used with two Nirvana songs, we didn’t know players have the ability to unlock the character. This feature allows the character to be used with any kind of song the player wants. We urge Activision to do the right thing in “re-locking” Kurt’s character so that this won’t continue in the future.

It’s hard to watch an image of Kurt pantomiming other artists’ music alongside cartoon characters. Kurt Cobain wrote songs that hold a lot of meaning to people all over the world. We feel he deserves better.

Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl

It seems that they just want you to be able to use Kurt only for the Nirvana songs, which is totally reasonable.

Just wanted to throw this out there.

What's the big deal about this anyway? I don't get it.

#3 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6750 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago
@natetodamax: It's not that big of a deal to me, but Cobain is considered "revolutionary" and the fact that Courtney Love freaked out doesn't help anything.
#4 Posted by TooWalrus (11817 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I lost respect for him when he blew his fucking brains out. He's not here to say no, so I hope people continue to make awesome videos of him singing Bon Jovi songs... If you import Beat It from World Tour... will Cobain moonwalk? Dude, I totally hope so.

I played a Beastie Boys song with everyone as Kurt Kobain.

And it was awesome.

Because no one else thinks it's hilarious watching a 3d Kurt Cobain sing Flava Flav.
#11 Posted by Crixaliz (777 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I don't get why this is a big deal either, how was he 'revolutionary'? I never heard his name in the same context of Jimmy Hendrix or someone of that caliber.

Which leads me to believe all this up roar is from his wife and some fans, in that case I'm with TooWalrus on this.

#12 Posted by Kiemoe (1053 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

People are upset about it because Cobain and a lot of grunge artists were against the corporate style put into pop music and his music went against everything that that stood for, so when his character is doing the exact opposite of what he believed during his life it's disrespectful. Basically if you died and Activision took your likeness and made you do a bunch of rascist things or something else you were against, that's what everyone's having a problem with

It's revolutionary in the technique he used with the shotgun in his head.
 Jokes.

It's just going on like how every 12 year old kid loves MJ because he died. People are just defending him to be "cool".

What that dude said.
But, again, this isn't a big deal for me personally.

I think about it as how others might. What if you played in the same band for years with someone you knew very well, he then committed suicide, with this you band mate and a friend perminantly. Then later in your years you see someone using the likeness of this deceased friend acting out Flavor flav and swinging his arms about. I guess they figured it would be more of a tribute not something that can be used to mock the deceased.

As for The beatles rock band, I think that is pretty much how a tribute looks like if I ever saw one.

@Crixaliz: Are you kidding? Do you realize that people were still listening to shitty hair bands like Poison when Nirvana came out? If changing radio from hair metal to grunge, (almost single handedly mind you) isn't revolutionary I don't know what is.

Well if Lennon was singing Flavor Flav I'm sure the Beatles and Yoko would be pissed too. That only works because Lennon only sings Lennon songs.

I did not want to laugh because I don't think it appropriate to make fun of someone who killed themselves but, dammit, that was fucking hilarious.

Hey Grunge lived and died with Kurt.

As much as I don't like seeing Kurt used this way freaking Courtney Love and her fucking lawyers probably should have looked at what they where signing a little bit closer. So i don't blame activision, i blame Courtney on this one.
#30 Posted by Claude (15850 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

Whatever, that's life bitch. Maybe he should not have pulled the trigger and left his likeness to others to decide.

#31 Edited by lasafrog (124 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

This is nothing real touchy for me, I wasn't a big fan of his or anything. That said, I do see where this whole thing is a bit opposite what people would expect from him. But who knows, if he was alive and still in the scene today, I'm sure he would have evolved not been so anti-estblishment - he would have had to at some point to stay relevant. Either way, I do understand why people are reacting to this. Maybe not the worst idea for Activision to patch and keep Cobain on Cobain songs only, if only out of respect for his fans.

Personally, I want to see him perform Beat It :)

Edit - The Johnny Cash toon bugs me a whole lot more, and I think we can all agree that's a man due a whole lot more respect that most musicians, past or present. I do NOT want to see him perform Beat It.

Wow, I had no idea it was suddenly cool to hate on Cobain. Even if you don't like his music, to deny him being revolutionary in music is just being ignorant. There's a reason everybody knows about him, and  it's not just because he commited suicide. He was huge before that, and he made the grunge genre what it was/is.
#34 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6750 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I looks like I started something here. I should've known better.

#35 Posted by TheGreatGuero (9067 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I think it's lame they're acting this way over it. Truthfully, Cobain was lucky to be in the game. He doesn't really qualify as a guitar hero. It annoys me that people make such a big deal over Kurt Cobain being able to sing other songs, but not any of the other artists, as if Cobain is somehow greater than them. He's built up like he's some sort of God. Dude, seriously, how the heck did Kurt Cobain end up being the voice of our generation?

#36 Posted by innacces14 (726 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I can take a chuckle at the fact that Krist and Dave must have facepalmed when they saw Courtney's response via Twitter. Other then that I'm okay with the three feeling how they feel.
#37 Edited by Red (5894 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

I think that the staff covered this topic pretty well in the last bombcast. It's just a little weird because Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash are dead, and weren't the most campy artists. They had absolutely no say in this, which really sucks. Basically the only reason someone would play as Kurt Cobain or Johnny Cash in a song that isn't his would be for the laugh value, which quite frankly, especially to the people that knew him, is a little bit disrespectful.

#38 Posted by AhmadMetallic (18957 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

im a nirvana fan, not too enthusiastic about kurt and i do not believe in being a big fan of another human being, but seeing kurt on that GH stage did not feel right at all. made me sick in my stomach, savvy?

#39 Posted by L33tfella_H (901 posts) - 3 years, 8 months ago

Nirvana's music is pretty good i'd say, but it's not at the point where i worship kurt cobain as god or anything, but i guess it's all about experiencing it back then i guess.

There's some fault at both ends when it comes to the Cobain deal. Love probably should've read the contract before she signed it(maybe she did and she's fussing just to Cover her ass, or maybe the contract did neglect or tried to sneak past the fine print that said he'd be an unlockable character that could potentially play any song.) and activision probably shouldn't try to capitalize off dead people (they had Matt Bellamy and Shirley Manson, why not other 'living' artists?).

I think the biggest thing though, is that he looks so eerily detailed in GH5 which bothers me the most....and that's also why him performing Flava Flav tracks is Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaantastic!

I don't have an opinion either way about his likeness being included in the game. But this sentence alone is enough for me to label you are vile, disgusting human being. I don't know if you are trying to be "internet cool" by being completely heartless, but you should stop.

My brother-in-law committed suicide, what did he leave in its wake, chaos. I'm not cool, I'm just real. You need to get over me. Thankyou.

So nobody here can even agree on the simple fact that it's in bad taste that you can defile dead people's likenesses so accurately with no shame?

Fine, next Smackdown game I want a Chris Benoit and a Daniel Benoit character and be able to put them in a Submission match.

If things were as simple as that, I would agree with you. I do believe that it is the most selfish thing that you can do in the world. That being said, I lived with and dated someone who attempted suicide. It is really hard to understand what the hell is going on with them. There is something that is deeply wrong with some one that attempts to or commits suicide. You just assume that they can turn off that feeling because someone tells them exactly what you just said. If it were that easy, there would be so many people still alive. Its hard to live with those people and even harder to leave them.

Someone who commits suicide is obviously suffering from a lot of mental issues. It's not as simple as saying "get the fuck over it". Also, don't respond to my message, I would really rather not hear from you again.

Do you feel the same way about mentally ill people who didn't get treatment in time and simply couldn't help themselves?
Suicide isn't just something done by dramawhores or drugged up rockstars bored with life you know.

I've held a 357 to my head, pulled back the trigger, but did not do the deed. I've been there. I see pain every day. I've seen the aftermath of suicide. I'm selfish and so were they. That's the fight I fight every day. Do you know me? Do you know my wife's pain? My pain? I can judge, it's my right. I fight for my dignity and I fight for my right to live. Death is easy... you just die.

That's sad, because you don't. My wife has had Lupus for 27 years. Steroids for all of those years. I've been married for 17 of those. Do you know what Steroids does to a person? The pain it inflicts, the mood swings, the anger. I'm her caregiver. She wishes to die sometimes, but she perseveres. I'm her strength, but sometimes I'm weak. She can say things that a man should not hear. It's not her, it's the drugs that the doctors have her on. Steroids, Oxycontin, Percocet, Klonipin, Valium and many others. This is life for me. She's not dead and we wake up everyday to face the future. I'm sorry if I get angry, but I feel close to the subject at hand.
