As much as I might be apathetic about Guitar Hero since Harmonix left, that's a lot of people who are probably losing their jobs today or in the near future. Hardly a cause to celebrate. We can just grimly hope (in vain) that Activision learns its lesson about 'exploiting' franchises.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.  Part of me is disappointed.  While I think they overdid it, I have had my share of fun with the GH games.  At the same time, I'm hoping that this will make things easier for the RB market, especially considering what's going on over there.

It's a shame though when shit like this happens just because people are fickle bandwagon jumpers.  And what I mean by that is that the GH series wouldn't have blown up the way it did if people hadn't jumped on that bandwagon.  And then something else came along and everyone hopped off that bandwagon and got in the new one.

Hopefully Neversoft can go back and work on the Tony Hawk franchise.

It had a good run, and maybe it will pop up again.

As someone who didn't care about music games, it was interesting to watch this rise and fall. With GH dead and Harmonix downsizing, I kind of feel justified in my apathy towards the genre, but I wonder if it could have lasted without the intense competition and exploitation.

Oh well, back to fun games.

World Tour was fun for a couple of weeks, now my fake plastic guitar sits, dusting, under the darkness of my bed...

in 11 years? You're being optimistic. I'm calling it at 5.

Sad about True Crime Hong Kong. I was kind of thinking it would be ok.

I got through this past decade of gaming without touching a plastic instrument. I feel i deserve a badge. Guitar hero was bad from day one, just watching people play it was mind numbing. I bet dimes to dollars that Rock Band 3 is the last rockband game.

Good, they can use that team to make MW3 a better game so people stop bitching about COD.

That's not how these things work.

This does not bode well for my idea for a Panduri Hero spinoff.

@brotherlu:
Ill take that bet. Winner gets a free game from the other guy. Bet expires Dec 2011.

It sucks for whoever is getting laid off.

But it's awesome for Harmonix. Now they won't have people copying everything they do.

#24 Posted by JJWeatherman (14558 posts) -

Thank god. Those assholes ruined the market. Why couldn't they have just never continued that series?

(When I say they, I mostly mean Activision. The Neversoft guys are generally cool and I feel bad for them)

Yeah, because I totally care about who lost their job and who didn't.
#29 Posted by melcene (3056 posts) -

Yeah, considering that RB is still fully supported and still releases content on a weekly basis I have trouble calling it dead.

Next stop, Call of Heroes.

#32 Posted by Zealousadonis (133 posts) -

I stopped playing Guitar Hero at the 2nd one. Moved on to Rock Band and still keep getting songs for it. I didn't like Guitar Hero because each game was it's own track list. Rock Band is great for it's constantly growing list of songs, with a handful of the ones on the discs lost every time they make a new game. I decided years ago I would only buy any music games if they could be integrated into my current Rock Band setlist.

@xyzygy:
I don't think Harmonix would think it's awesome for them, why would you think that?
#34 Posted by Kezmer (20 posts) -

I really was hoping for Call of Guitars: Modern Hero Warfare

Because now they have the monopoly on the Music game scene. I realize that competition is good though, so it's not all good I guess.

Jeez OP, did guitar hero rape your mother or something?

#37 Posted by jakob187 (21670 posts) -

*ugh*

Warriors of Rock was a solid entry that I thoroughly enjoyed.  It took shit back to the days of Guitar Hero II and Guitar Hero III in terms of on-disc soundtrack, general irreverence and tone.  I guess too many people are allured by "quantity" in Rock Band that they can't just enjoy a game for what is put on the disc at all.

This is seriously stupid.

#38 Posted by melcene (3056 posts) -
@jakob187: I've been into the series since the first GH game on PS2, when it was basically the only one (other than the Konami one or whatever it was).  Guitar Hero definitely had some highlights, and I would have remained a HUGE fan, if they allowed importing of one game into the next, then the next, then the next.  But that wasn't the case.  So it's not really a matter of quantity but hell, just supporting the fans that have been loyal to them over the years.   I would love to be able to play some of the GH1 games without dusting off my PS2.  And the greatest hits release just wasn't enough for me.

Warriors of Rock was okay.  Honestly, if I plug in a GH game anymore, odds are its GH: Metallica.

ive had some good memories of this game...  oh well, the yearly release was actually bugging me

#44 Posted by zudthespud (3281 posts) -

I never bought a guitar hero game, I've never bought a Rock Band game, and I never will. They're fun to play at parties, for about 10 minutes. Never been vaguely interested in actually buying one.

I don't need to spend ~£100 to get a high score to enjoy playing music. I'm sorry if that sounds elitist but it's true.

Guitar Hero dying has no effect on me at all. I really couldn't give a shit. I don't buy Activision products anyway so the idea of them moving resources to work on something else is uninteresting to me also.
